Applying the WHO strategic approach to strengthening first and second trimester abortion services in Mongolia.

Abortion was made legal on request in Mongolia in 1989, following the collapse of the socialist regime, and later bound by a range of regulations. Concerned about the high number of abortions and inadequate quality of care in abortion services, the Ministry of Health applied the World Health Organization's Strategic Approach to issues related to abortion and contraception in 2003. The aim was to develop policies and programmes to reduce unintended pregnancies, mitigate complications from unsafe abortion, and improve the quality of abortion and contraception services for all socio-economic grou

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Latent Tuberculosis Infection among People Living with HIV in Mongolia.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV). Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) poses a serious challenge because immune suppression substantially increases the risk of progression to active disease. In Mongolia, where TB incidence is high, little is known about LTBI prevalence and risk factors among PLHIV. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of LTBI and identify risk factors for LTBI in Mongolia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using secondary data from the AIDS/STI

Genetic diversity analysis of IVM resistant Haemonchus contortus in sheep in inner Mongolia of China.

Haemonchus contortus is widely distributed in the world, which is seriously harmful to small ruminants and has serious resistance to common anthelmintics. Over time, the prevalence and intensity of host infection with this parasite have gradually increased, so it is necessary to study the phylogenetic and genetic changes of single anthelmintic resistant strains. This study is the first to analyze the genetic diversity and population structure about IVM-resistant H.contortus (L3,egg, adult, n = 30 ) in Inner Mongolia, China. The H.contortus were identified to IVM resistance and cultured by feca

Fox rabies outbreaks in the republic of Buryatia: Connections with neighbouring areas of Russia, Mongolia and China.

The Republic of Buryatia (RB) is located southeast of Lake Baikal and shares a long border with Mongolia. This region of Russia was rabies-free from 1982 to 2010. The first outbreak of fox rabies in RB was identified in 2011, about 30 km from the Russian-Mongolian border. We assessed the possible pathways to further spread the 'steppe' phylogenetic lineage of the rabies virus near the northeastern limits of its known distribution. All rabies cases were located 30-210 km north of the Russia-Mongolia border, with a distance of up to 320 km from each other. Rabies has spread to the north across s

Seroepidemiological study of Toxoplama gondii in small ruminants (sheep and goat) in different provinces of Mongolia.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Consumption of raw or undercooked meat is the main risk factor for acquiring T. gondii infection in humans. Meat and meat products derived from goats and sheep are mainly consumed in Mongolia; however, there is limited epidemiological information on T. gondii infection in small ruminants in this country. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii in sheep and goats in Mongolia. The seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG antibodies was determined by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbe

Gastrointestinal nematodes infections and anthelmintic resistance in grazing sheep in the Eastern Inner Mongolia in China.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a crucial restraint to grazing sheep production worldwide. This study was conducted to determine the infections and anthelmintic resistance (AR) of GIN in pasture-based sheep in the Eastern Inner Mongolia, China. GIN eggs were tested from 600 grazing sheep feces of 10 farms using saturated saline flotation method and McMaster's method. The egg hatch test (EHT) and the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) were used to evaluate resistance of GIN to anthelmintics. We found that the average infection rate was 79.2% (range: 45%-100%). The grand mean faecal eg

Isolation and characterization of tick-borne encephalitis virus from Ixodes persulcatus in Mongolia in 2012.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic virus belonging to the genus Flavivirus, in the family Flaviviridae. The virus, which is endemic in Europe and northern parts of Asia, causes severe encephalitis. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has been reported in Mongolia since the 1980s, but details about the biological characteristics of the endemic virus are lacking. In this study, 680 ticks (Ixodes persulcatus) were collected in Selenge aimag, northern Mongolia, in 2012. Nine Mongolian TBEV strains were isolated from tick homogenates. A sequence analysis of the envelope protein gene revea
