Epidemiology of human Monkey-pox cases in Rivers State, Nigeria January 2017-June 2022.

The resurgence in monkey pox disease has posed a global health threat. Nigeria recorded increased number of reported monkey pox cases in 2017, with cases occurring in subsequent years. Notably, cases of monkey pox had been reported in western countries from an epidemiologically linked traveler with a travel history to Nigeria. The highest burden of cases of monkey pox is recorded in River state, Nigeria. Consequently, there is the need to examine the epidemiology of monkey pox according to time, place, person and geography in Rivers state. A retrospective analysis of monkey pox cases was condu

Establishment of a non-human primate Campylobacter disease model for the pre-clinical evaluation of Campylobacter vaccine formulations.

Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of enteritis worldwide. The mechanisms by which C. jejuni causes disease are unclear. Challenge studies in humans are currently considered unethical due to the possibility of severe complications, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome. Campylobacter infection in non-human primates closely mimics the disease and immune response, seen in humans. In this study, we attempted to determine the minimal dose of a pathogenic C. jejuni 81-176 strain required for clinical signs and symptoms of disease (> or = 80% attack rate) in Macaca mulatta monkeys using an escalating

Hemostatic derangement produced by Rift Valley fever virus in rhesus monkeys.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important cause of disease in animals and humans in sub-Saharan Africa. In a small percentage of human cases, the disease is complicated by hemorrhage, which often is associated with a fatal outcome. Inoculation of rhesus monkeys with the Zagazig Hospital strain of RVF virus produced a clinical picture similar to illness in humans. Ten of 17 monkeys developed clinical evidence of hemostatic impairment. When coagulation tests were performed, this group of monkeys had significant abnormalities, including evidence for disseminated intravascular coagulation. These abn

Effects of epidemic diseases on the distribution of bonobos.

This study examined how outbreaks and the occurrence of Anthrax, Ebola, Monkeypox and Trypanosomiasis may differentially affect the distribution of bonobos (Pan paniscus). Using a combination of mapping, Jaccard overlapping coefficients and binary regressions, the study determined how each disease correlated with the extent of occurrence of, and the areas occupied by, bonobos. Anthrax has only been reported to occur outside the range of bonobos and so was not considered further. Ebola, Monkeypox and Trypanosomiasis were each reported within the area of occupancy of bonobos. Their respective ov

Pathogenesis of Rift Valley fever in rhesus monkeys: role of interferon response.

Rhesus monkeys inoculated intravenously with Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus presented clinical disease syndromes similar to human cases of RVF. All 17 infected monkeys had high-titered viremias but disease ranged from clinically inapparent to death. Three (18%) RVF virus-infected monkeys developed signs of hemorrhagic fever characterized by epistaxis, petechial to purpuric cutaneous lesions, anorexia, and vomiting prior to death. The 14 remaining monkeys survived RVF viral infection but, 7 showed clinical signs of illness characterized by diminished food intake, cutaneous petechiae, and occasio

Reemerging and New Infectious Diseases.

Reemerging infectious diseases remain a growing global concern. Infections such as monkey pox and syphilis have resurfaced with changing clinical patterns and broader geographic spread. Surveillance data suggest that a significant number of suspected cases actually represent umbilicated lesions of herpetic origin, and histopathologic or other laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis is critical.

Capture of Alouatta guariba clamitans for the surveillance of sylvatic yellow fever and zoonotic malaria: Which is the best strategy in the tropical Atlantic Forest?

Howler monkey capture is an arduous and expensive task requiring trained and specialized professionals. We compared strategies and methods to most efficiently capture Alouatta guariba clamitans in remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro and its bordering states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. We tested whether or not the success of expeditions in the forest with anesthetic darts, nets, and baited traps differed with and without the support of an information network, a contact chain built with key institutions and inhabitants to continuously monitor howler monkey presence. The influenc

Evaluation of an intragastric challenge model for Shigella dysenteriae 1 in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) for the pre-clinical assessment of Shigella vaccine formulations.

Shigellosis is a worldwide disease, characterized by abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and the passage of blood- and mucus-streaked stools. Rhesus monkeys and other primates are the only animals that are naturally susceptible to shigellosis. A suitable animal model is required for the pre-clinical evaluation of vaccines candidates. In this study, the minimal dose of Shigella dysenteriae1 1617 strain required to produce dysentery in four of five (80% attack rate) monkeys using an escalating dose range for three groups [2 × 10(8) , 2 × 10(9) and 2 × 10(10) colony forming unit (CFU)] was determine

A second sooty mangabey monkey with naturally acquired leprosy: first reported possible monkey-to-monkey transmission.

The existence of naturally acquired leprosy in a second sooty mangabey monkey has been documented. The disease has the clinical and histopathological characteristics of subpolar lepromatous leprosy (LLs), and microbiological studies thus far confirm the etiologic agent as Mycobacterium leprae. This mangabey had been housed in direct contact with the first mangabey in which naturally acquired leprosy was diagnosed in 1979. Clinical symptoms appeared in the second mangabey in 1986, almost 7 years after the appearance of skin lesions in the first monkey. It is likely that the second mangabey cont

EXPERIMENTS ON THE TRANSMISSION OF SCARLET FEVER TO THE LOWER MONKEYS.

1. The reported successful transfer of scarlet fever to both higher and lower monkeys is not definitely established. 2. In the course of the experiments here reported, the infectious agent can be assumed to have been carried over to the monkeys. The failure to cause infection probably proceeds from the insusceptibility of the monkeys employed, or to the manner of introducing the agent. 3. The temperature curve and leucocyte count of monkeys are unsatisfactory criteria for the diagnosis of disease in those animals. 4. Monkeys frequently have transient blotchy, erythematous eruptions on the face

Blood transmission studies of prion infectivity in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus): the Baxter study.

BACKGROUND: Four secondary transmissions of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) infectivity have been associated with the transfusion of nonleukoreduced red blood cells collected from vCJD patients during the asymptomatic phase of the disease. Establishing efficient experimental models for assessing the risk of future transmissions of vCJD infectivity via blood transfusion is of paramount importance in view of a study of archived appendix samples in which the prevalence of asymptomatic vCJD infection in the United Kingdom was estimated at approximately 1 in 2000 of the population. In this

Tetralogy of fallot in a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

Only a few case reports have described heart diseases in monkeys, and most cases have involved postmortem diagnosis. A newborn female Japanese macaque showed weakness immediately after birth and died 1 d thereafter. Necropsy revealed that the animal had tetralogy of Fallot and patent ductus arteriosus. This report is the first description of tetralogy of Fallot in a monkey.

Melioidosis in imported non-human primates.

In 1969, five cases of melioidosis in three separate outbreaks were diagnosed in nonhuman primates in the United States. In the first outbreak, two stump-tailed macaque monkeys (Macaca arctoides) developed signs of the disease approximately 6 months after purchase. A third animal, a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), probably acquired its infection from one of these monkeys. Two other unrelated cases involving a pig-tailed monkey (Macaca nemestrina) and a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) were diagnosed. These monkeys had been imported 3 years and 6 months, respectively, prior to the recognized onset

A fatal epizootic of undetermined etiology in new world monkeys.

A peracute epizootic disease, strikingly characterized by profuse terminal hemorrhaging from the lungs, caused the deaths of 104 squirrel monkeys and 3 capuchin monkeys over a 22-month period. The case fatality rate was 100%. The pulmonary hemorrhaging was often accompanied by pulmonary edema and congestion, interstitial pneumonia, and hydrothorax. Additional histologic lesions included interstitial nephritis, hepatitis and hepatic necrosis, adrenalitis and adrenal necrosis, myocarditis, splenic atrophy or hypoplasia, pancreatitis and pancreatic necrosis, sialoadenitis, and encephalitis. Chronic high-frequency stimulation therapy in hemiparkinsonian rhesus monkeys using an implanted human DBS system.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is routinely used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, tremor disease, dystonia, and epilepsy. This study aims to establish a hemiparkinsonian monkey model and to investigate the effect of implanted human DBS system for the chronic alleviation of parkinsonian symptoms. Hemiparkinsonism was induced in four rhesus monkeys by unilateral infusion of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. DBS leads were implanted stereotaxically in the right subthalamic (STN) of the monkeys. Subcutaneous extension wires were used to connect the leads to the internal pulse gen

Evaluation of cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis) and rhesus (Macaca mulatta) monkeys as experimental models of acute Q fever after aerosol exposure to phase-I Coxiella burnetii.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Q fever is a disease of humans. Vaccines to prevent this disease have demonstrated efficacy in rodents and must also be evaluated for efficacy in a nonhuman primate model. Preliminary to vaccine efficacy experiments, cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys were evaluated as suitable experimental models of acute Q fever. METHODS: Both species of monkeys were challenged with aerosolized 10(5) virulent phase-I Coxiella burnetii Henzerling strain, and clinical and serologic responses were determined. RESULTS: Radiographic changes were observed in seven of eight monkeys of both spec

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection: study of an epizootic in squirrel monkeys.

An epizootic of an acutely fatal enteric disease in a colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) was attributed to infection by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype III. Of a total adult population of 96 animals at risk, there were six fatal cases of yersiniosis. Serological evaluation of the colony just after the outbreak ended revealed that 22 of 60 monkeys tested (37%) had significant antibody to Y. pseudotuberculosis (microagglutination titer of greater than or equal to 1:80) but did not have clinical disease. The outstanding pathological lesions noted in dying monkeys were acute, purul

DEMONSTRATION OF PASSIVE IMMUNITY IN EXPERIMENTAL MONKEY MALARIA.

A Plasmodium knowlesi infection in rhesus monkeys is almost invariably fatal. This infection, however, may be made chronic by the early administration of antimalarial drugs. The animals then will harbor a chronic infection for an indefinite period. The serum taken from monkeys with chronic infection and injected into those suffering from an acute attack was found to have a definite depressing effect upon the course of the experimental disease. In some instances death was prevented and the acute infection changed into a chronic form; in others, the course of the experimental disease was prolong

Longitudinal cellular immune responses in asymptomatic and symptomatic Brugia malayi-infected Indian leaf monkey Presbytis entellus.

To investigate the cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses of the host during the development of acute filarial disease manifestations, we studied the sequential changes in CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell subsets, leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) response to Brugia malayi adult worm antigen, and concanavalin-A (ConA) and filarial antigen-induced lymphocyte transformation (LT) in the Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus)-B. malayi model. Filarial infection was established in monkeys by subcutaneous inoculations of infective larvae (L3) (700-1,250 L3/monkey) in multiple doses, and the infected monkeys w

A Robust Single Primate Neuroepithelial Cell Clonal Expansion System for Neural Tube Development and Disease Studies.

Developing a model of primate neural tube (NT) development is important to promote many NT disorder studies in model organisms. Here, we report a robust and stable system to allow for clonal expansion of single monkey neuroepithelial stem cells (NESCs) to develop into miniature NT-like structures. Single NESCs can produce functional neurons in vitro, survive, and extensively regenerate neuron axons in monkey brain. NT formation and NESC maintenance depend on high metabolism activity and Wnt signaling. NESCs are regionally restricted to a telencephalic fate. Moreover, single NESCs can turn into
