[Neuroethics: new quality of medical ethics?].

During the last decade there has been a striking growth in interest in ethical issues arising from the development of neurosciences. It was as late as 2002 that the new discipline, called neuroethics, started. It was intended to be a new area of interdisciplinary discourse on moral dilemmas connected with recent advances in, broadly understood, neurosciences. Ten years after its launch neuroethics possesses a distinct body of knowledge and an institutional basis for its further development. As a very young discipline, however, neuroethics is still in a state offlux. Two essential theoretical c

Imperatives in Social Media and Beyond: A Lingisian Analysis.

It has become a commonplace that our phones and other devices have a strange and unhealthy hold on us. Social media seemed to promise us a world where we are all linked into a borderless community where each could be seen, recognized, and valued in our individuality. But in fact, things have turned out very differently. Our devices, social media, and A.I. grab and manipulate our attention with the peculiar force of moral and psychological imperatives. In this paper, I turn to the philosopher Alphonso Lingis, who has written with uncommon clarity and depth about the nature of imperatives and of

Six-Domain Moral Ecology Framework for Quality Leadership in Healthcare: A Conceptual Synthesis.

IntroductionHealthcare leaders are expected to deliver safer care, better outcomes, and improved access while navigating workforce shortages, moral distress, and administrative burden. Improvement efforts oscillate between culture-first and systems-first approaches, each generating predictable failure modes - metric gaming, burnout, superficial compliance, and persistent safety variation. A practical, integrative framework for quality leadership that spans culture, systems, incentives, and governance is lacking.MethodsThis conceptual synthesis develops a 'moral ecology' model for quality leade

The Phenomenology and Dynamics of Wealth Shame: Between Moral Responsibility and Moral Masochism.

In an age of striking inequality in wealth, a related phenomenon, wealth shame, has developed. A multidisciplinary exploration of such shame examines its intrapsychic, intersubjective, transgenerational, and sociopolitical roots in the U.S., as well as its multiple functions: as an ethical response to economic disparity (moral responsibility), as a manifestation of a pervasive shame pattern (moral masochism), and as a defense against pleasure, feelings of superiority, and the fear of being envied. Several clinical vignettes illustrate these themes and are followed by reflections on their clini

Surprising pandemic experiences: A confrontation between principle-based and virtue ethics, and a plea for virtue ethics training for medical students and residents. A rudimentary outline of a four-step model.

BACKGROUND: In past years, physicians have, with a certain continuity, reported increasing numbers of burnout, depression and compassion fatigue in their daily practice. These problems were attributed, not only but also, to a loss of public trust and an increase in violent behaviour of patients and family members towards medical professionals in all walks of life. Recently, however, during the breakout of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, there were public expressions of appreciation and respect for health care workers that almost universally have been assessed as indic

Good work for dentists--ideal and reality for female unpromoted general practice dentists in a region of Sweden.

UNLABELLED: Female unpromoted general practice dentists (GPDs) in the Public Dental Health Service (PDHS) constitute about one fourth of all working dentists in Sweden. Unpromoted means that the position is without managerial functions. According to many reports, they have a problematic psychosocial work situation. THIS THESIS AIMED TO: Describe the perceived health for these GPDs, in comparison with others with a similar work situation. Analyse their sense of support in comparison with others. Describe how they perceived "good work", i.e. both the healthy and socially responsible work, and w

Life History and Multi-Partner Mating: A Novel Explanation for Moral Stigma Against Consensual Non-monogamy.

Life history theory (LHT) predicts that individuals vary in their sexual, reproductive, parental, familial, and social behavior according to the physical and social challenges imposed upon them throughout development. LHT provides a framework for understanding why non-monogamy may be the target of significant moral condemnation: individuals who habitually form multiple romantic or sexual partnerships may pursue riskier, more competitive interpersonal strategies that strain social cooperation. We compared several indices of life history (i.e., the Mini-K, the High-K Strategy Scale, pubertal tim

[Kant and the smallpox inoculation].

Smallpox was an endemic, very contagious disease which caused a high mortality rate during the age of enlightenment. In order to counter act this epidemic, smallpox inoculation was developed. This technique consisted in the inoculation of infected pus taken from a sick person into a healthy one in order to prevent the risks of natural smallpox infection. It was in this context that a German doctor in charge of inoculation wrote to Kant twice in 1799, and again in 1800, to ask him if inoculation was morally permissible. Kant wrote a draft of an answer, but it was never completed or published du

Professional death avoidance and associated factors among intensive care unit nurses in China: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in intensive care units (ICUs) frequently encounter patient death, ethical dilemmas, and emotionally demanding clinical situations. These experiences may be associated with emotional exhaustion, moral distress, and professional death avoidance. Professional death avoidance refers to a work-context-specific tendency to distance oneself from death-related professional situations, including communication, care tasks, emotional engagement, and reflection related to patient death. Understanding the current status of professional death avoidance and its associated factors is impor

Moral Injury and Recovery in Uniformed Professionals: Lessons From Conversations Among International Students and Experts.

INTRODUCTION: In the course of service, military members, leaders, and uniformed professionals are at risk of exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). Serious mental health consequences including Moral Injury (MI) and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can result. Guilt, shame, spiritual/existential conflict, and loss of trust are described as core symptoms of MI. These can overlap with anxiety, anger, re-experiencing, self-harm, and social problems commonly seen in PTSD. The experiences of General (retired) Romeo Dallaire and other international experts who have led in tim

The comportmental learning disabilities of early frontal lobe damage.

Two adult patients are described who suffered bilateral prefrontal damage early in life and who subsequently came to psychiatric attention because of severely aberrant behaviour. A battery of developmental psychology paradigms (not previously used to assess neurologically impaired individuals) showed that social and moral development of these 2 patients was arrested at an immature stage. In comparison with other types of brain damage which disrupt cognitive development, frontal damage acquired early in life appears to provide the neurological substrate for a special type of learning disability

Development of emotion comprehension in children with autism spectrum disorder and Williams syndrome.

Although research has shed light on the development of emotion comprehension in typically developing children, little is known about emotion comprehension in children who are developing atypically. Thus, this study examined the developmental trajectory of emotion understanding in non-clinical (NC) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Williams syndrome (WS) using a Test of Emotion Comprehension. In the test, we measured children's understanding of (I) recognition of emotions based on facial expressions, (II) external causes of emotions, (III) desire-based emotions, (IV)

Integrating sociocultural theories to inform public health response: unique relationships between moral foundations, cultural cognition worldviews, and COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors.

Key variables from Moral Foundations Theory and the Cultural Theory of Risk were examined in relationship to COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors. Two surveys were conducted with unvaccinated U. S. adults (n = 1,025) that assessed five moral foundations (care, fairness, authority, loyalty, and purity), two dimensions of Cultural Cognition Worldviews (individualism-communitarianism and hierarchy-egalitarianism), COVID-19 vaccination likelihood and related attitudes (including measures of perceived risk, protective behavior, and trust), political orientation, and demographic characteristics. Preventing burnout from moral distress among prehospital emergency personnel through action research and targeted clinical ethics support.

Ethical challenges are integral to health care and are associated with moral distress among health professionals. Moral distress can turn into burnout with a range of negative effects for professionals, patients, relatives, collaborators, and the organisation. Based on action research a focus group study was conducted inclucing prehospital personnel from the emergency services in the Region of Southern Denmark. Results showed that ethical challenges arise in contexts of (1) caring for patients, (2) managing organisational demands, (3) collaborating. Ethical challenges are addressed informally

Nurse-perpetrated abuse in Japanese psychiatric hospitals: a cross-sectional study of prevalence and correlates.

INTRODUCTION: The abuse of psychiatric inpatients in psychiatric hospitals is a global concern. Although the prevalence may be underestimated due to underreporting rates of physical abuse and restraint have been reported at 6% and 40%, respectively. However, data on this issue are scarce, where the picture is further complicated by the difficulty in defining "abuse" within a context where certain coercive measures are legally permitted. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of such abuse and its psychological and workplace-related correlates. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional s

Attitudes towards end-of-life decisions and the subjective concepts of consciousness: an empirical analysis.

BACKGROUND: People have fought for their civil rights, primarily the right to live in dignity. At present, the development of technology in medicine and healthcare led to an apparent paradox: many people are fighting for the right to die. This study was aimed at testing whether different moral principles are associated with different attitudes towards end-of-life decisions for patients with a severe brain damage. METHODOLOGY: We focused on the ethical decisions about withdrawing life-sustaining treatments in patients with severe brain damage. 202 undergraduate students at the University of Pa

Palliative sedation as a cultural solution in Israel: a philosophical-ethical inquiry into end-of-life practice in a multicultural society.

Palliative sedation (PS) is a morally complex end-of-life practice that sits at the intersection of medicine, law, religion, and culture. While often framed as a purely clinical intervention aimed at alleviating intractable suffering, this article argues that PS functions—particularly in pluralistic societies such as Israel—as a form of ethical mediation and cultural accommodation. Through a philosophical-theoretical inquiry, this paper explores PS not as a universally justified act, but as a “cultural solution”: a pragmatic ethical practice that enables care to proceed amid deep moral disagre

Residue and Resilience: Understanding and Addressing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Compassion Fatigue, Moral Injury, and Burnout in Emergency Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medicine providers frequently experience psychological distress, often labeled as "burnout." However, this term is frequently used as a catch-all, obscuring key differences between burnout, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These distinct conditions arise from different causes-ranging from individual trauma to organizational dysfunction-and require targeted interventions. Mislabeling them can lead to ineffective or even counterproductive solutions. DISCUSSION: PTSD is an acute condition stemming from identifiable traumatic event

Stress and distress in pediatric nurses: lessons from Baby K.

BACKGROUND: Nurses experience stress and suffering when they care for critically ill and dying patients. Moral distress occurs when nurses are unable to translate their moral choices into moral action. In response to this stress, nurses may experience burnout. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the attitudes and perceptions of the nurses who were ordered by the court to provide long-term care for Baby K, a female child with anencephaly. METHOD: A questionnaire was developed to provide descriptive insight into the stress and distress the nurses experienced while caring for Baby K. RESULTS: Nurses car
