Vernier acuity is normal in migraine, whereas global form and global motion perception are not.

PURPOSE: A recent study has demonstrated that some people with migraine display impairments of intermediate stages of motion and form processing. Deficits were identified by using tasks that required that local stimulus attributes be integrated into global percepts. Neurons capable of global processing of form and motion are known to be present in extrastriate cortical areas V4 and V5, respectively. It is not clear from the literature whether deficits of global processing in migraineurs are likely to arise from reduced input to extrastriate cortex from primary visual cortex (V1). The purpose o

Perception of self-motion from peripheral optokinetic stimulation suppresses visual evoked responses to central stimuli.

In a previous functional neuroimaging study we found that early visual areas deactivated when a rotating optical flow stimulus elicited the illusion of self-motion (vection) compared with when it was perceived as a moving object. Here, we investigated whether electrical cortical responses to an independent central visual probe stimulus change as a function of whether optical flow stimulation in the periphery induces the illusion of self-motion or not. Visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were obtained in response to pattern-reversals in the central visual field in the presence of a constant periphe

Enhanced perceptions of control and predictability reduce motion-induced nausea and gastric dysrhythmia.

Nausea is a debilitating condition that is typically accompanied by gastric dysrhythmia. The enhancement of perceived control and predictability has generally been found to attenuate the physiological stress response. The aim of the present study was to test the effect of these psychosocial variables in the context of nausea, motion sickness, and gastric dysrhythmia. A 2x2, independent-groups, factorial design was employed in which perceived control and predictability were each provided at high or low levels to 80 participants before exposure to a rotating optokinetic drum. Ratings of nausea w

Ambiguous pictorial depth cues and perceptions of nonrigid motion in the three-loop figure.

The three-loop figure is a two-dimensional (2-D) pattern that generates (mis)perceptions of nonrigid three-dimensional (3-D) structure when rotated about its centre. Such observations have been described as counterexamples to the principle whereby a moving object is presumed to be rigid, provided that a rigid interpretation is possible (ie the 'rigidity constraint'). In the present investigation we demonstrated that stationary three-loop figures exhibit many of the classic properties of multistable/ambiguous figures, with any one of several possible 3-D configurations being reported at any one

Research on the safety risks of microwave irradiation on motion balance perception in electric power environments.

To the microwave irradiation safety hazards caused by the co-construction of towers in smart grids, this paper investigates the effects of microwave irradiation in the power environment on the biological motion balance perception function. Firstly, simulation of microwave signals in the electric power environment, i.e., low-frequency harmonics and high-frequency carriers, were realized by signal modulation and applied in four types of behavior testing scenarios. Then, determining rats as target organisms to replace workers and randomly dividing into groups in proportion: open field, rotating r

Lesions to right posterior parietal cortex impair visual depth perception from disparity but not motion cues.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is understood to be active when observers perceive three-dimensional (3D) structure. However, it is not clear how central this activity is in the construction of 3D spatial representations. Here, we examine whether PPC is essential for two aspects of visual depth perception by testing patients with lesions affecting this region. First, we measured subjects' ability to discriminate depth structure in various 3D surfaces and objects using binocular disparity. Patients with lesions to right PPC (N = 3) exhibited marked perceptual deficits on these tasks, wherea

Phenylthiocarbamide taste perception and susceptibility to motion sickness: linking higher susceptibility with higher phenylthiocarbamide taste acuity.

OBJECTIVE: This study is the first attempt to link quantified phenylthiocarbamide bitter taste recognition threshold with susceptibility to motion sickness. SUBJECTS: The study was conducted on a sample of 291 teenage Rajput children (146 males and 145 females; age range 13-19 years) from the Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Phenylthiocarbamide taste sensitivity was measured by administering a serial dilution of a freshly prepared phenylthiocarbamide solution, following the method of Harris and Kalmus. Motion sickness susceptibility was assessed retrospectively via interview. RES

Deficits and recovery of first- and second-order motion perception in patients with unilateral cortical lesions.

Unilateral lesions in the posterior parietal cortex can degrade motion perception in the contralesional visual hemifield. Our aim was to investigate whether deficits caused by cortical lesions may be different for first- and second-order motion perception, and to study the time scale of any potential recovery. In nine patients with circumscribed lesions mainly in the parietal and fronto-parietal cortex, thresholds for direction discrimination were measured for stimuli presented peripherally in their ipsi- and contralesional hemifield. Subjects had to identify the direction of a vertically movi

Can transcranial direct current stimulation improve range of motion and modulate pain perception in healthy individuals?

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of different electrode assemblies and electric current polarity on the ROM of the hip and pain perception. Ten healthy male, sedentary, right-leg-dominant, and aged between 19 and 30 years (24.0 ± 4.0 years) subjects were recruited. For the experimental conditions, the application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was performed with the following montages. In the montage 1, the cathodal electrode was placed over the motor cortex (MC) horizontally, and the anodal electrode was positioned over the left dorsolateral

Anodal and cathodal electrical stimulation over V5 improves motion perception by signal enhancement and noise reduction.

BACKGROUND: The effect that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has on discrimination of coherent motion (CM) signals in a field of randomly moving dots (noise) can be accounted for by both noise reduction and signal enhancement. OBJECTIVE: To distinguish between noise reduction and signal enhancement, we monitored the discrimination of the correct CM direction as a function of the coherence level (using the psychophysical method of constant stimuli). We then analyzed the threshold and slope parameters. METHOD: Thirty observers participated in the experiment; fifteen received cath

Motion makes sense: an adaptive motor-sensory strategy underlies the perception of object location in rats.

Tactile perception is obtained by coordinated motor-sensory processes. We studied the processes underlying the perception of object location in freely moving rats. We trained rats to identify the relative location of two vertical poles placed in front of them and measured at high resolution the motor and sensory variables (19 and 2 variables, respectively) associated with this whiskers-based perceptual process. We found that the rats developed stereotypic head and whisker movements to solve this task, in a manner that can be described by several distinct behavioral phases. During two of these

Critical roles for distance, task, and motion in space perception: initial conceptual framework and practical implications.

OBJECTIVE: A conceptual framework of visual space perception is proposed. BACKGROUND: Prior studies suggest that the processes underlying space perception depend on viewing distance, the nature of a task, and the presence and nature of motion. METHOD: Evidence from neuropsychological, neuroimaging, and behavioral studies is reviewed. RESULTS: A preliminary conceptual framework of space perception is proposed in which three critical factors of distance, task, and motion represent different dimensions. Different locations within the framework represent the involvement of different underlying

Influence of attention and predictive visual cue on motion perception and sickness in immersive virtual environment.

Relieving motion sickness and enhancing self-motion perception are required for the public application of immersive visual display system. The effects of user attention and predictive visual cue have been experimentally evaluated in this study. A viewpoint moving visual stimulus was applied to eighteen healthy adults. The subjective evaluation presumably suggested that a predictive visual cue enhances self-motion perception and relieves motion sickness at a same time.

Implementation of a Clinical Test of Vestibular Self-Motion Perception in Children and Adults With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: In adult populations, tests of vestibular self-motion perception have been shown to be sensitive to vestibular loss, including subclinical vestibular changes. However, tests of vestibular perception have not been adequately studied in pediatric populations and are not currently possible in a standard clinical environment. To address these gaps, the present study aimed to determine (i) the feasibility of measuring vestibular perception in pediatric populations and (ii) the validity of vestibular perceptual thresholds captured using a standard clinical rotational chair and software.

Motion perceptions induced by off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) at small angles of tilt.

Off-vertical axis rotation in darkness induces a perception of body motion which lasts as long as rotation continues. Perceived body motion is the combination of two simultaneous displacements. The most easily perceived is a translation without rotation along a conical path, at the frequency of the actual rotation. Meanwhile, the subjects feel as if they were always facing towards the same direction. The summit of the cone is generally below the head, from the waist to below the feet, and subjects have a sense of progression in the direction opposite to actual spinning. Some subjects feel, on

The psychophysical limits of agency: Biological motion percepts are dramatically weakened in slow-moving displays.

The most important stimuli we perceive may be other agents, given their effects on our fitness. Accordingly, perception may be specialized for processing agents, and one of the best-studied examples is biological motion: displays of surprisingly few moving dots ("point-light walkers"; PLWs) nevertheless give rise to rich percepts of locomoting agents. Is this a complex instance of general motion perception, such that PLWs simply inherit the lower thresholds of general motion perception? Or might biological motion have a distinct lower "speed limit"? Observers viewed PLWs moving in place, alway

Delayed onset of rotatory self-motion perception, dysdiadochokinesia and disturbed eye pursuit caused by low-dose pregabalin.

A 30-year-old woman with chronic foot pain after an orthopaedic surgery and chronic neck pain presented to the emergency department (ED) with a history of self-rotatory vertigo with unsteadiness. She had started low-dose pregabalin, 25 mg two times a day 9 months before experiencing symptoms with the dose gradually increased to 150 mg two times a day over this period. Clinical examination revealed difficulty performing eye pursuit with left eye and dysdiadochokinesia of the left arm. Owing to a suspicion of multiple sclerosis she underwent cerebral MRI, which was normal. Pregabalin was tapered

Increased Perception of Head Tilt to Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Correlates to Motion Sickness Susceptibility in Vestibular Migraine.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine is associated with vertigo, persistent swaying, tilting, and disorientation, which suggests a heightened sensitivity of the neural mechanisms subserving spatial orientation. Whether a heightened sense of motion to vestibular stimulation in vestibular migraine is associated with sensitivity to visual motion (visual dependency) or physical motion (motion sickness susceptibility) is unclear. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore whether a heightened sense of self-motion sensitivity in vestibular migraine is associated with visual dependency or motion sickn

Does Vestibular Motion Perception Correlate with Axonal Pathways Stimulated by Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease?

Perception of our linear motion - heading - is critical for postural control, gait, and locomotion, and it is impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD). Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has variable effects on vestibular heading perception, depending on the location of the electrodes within the subthalamic nucleus (STN). Here, we aimed to find the anatomical correlates of heading perception in PD. Fourteen PD participants with bilateral STN DBS performed a two-alternative forced-choice discrimination task where a motion platform delivered translational forward movements with a heading angle varying bet
