Efficacy of Intensive Inpatient Therapy in Infants with Congenital Muscular Torticollis Involving the Entire Sternocleidomastoid Muscle.

The efficacy and frequency of physiotherapy in the prognosis of congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) that involves the entire sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle continues to be unclear. This study investigated the therapeutic effect of intensive inpatient therapy given to infants with CMT that involves the whole SCM using clinical measurements and ultrasound (US). This study included 54 infants (27 boys and 27 girls; mean corrected age of 18.57 days) evaluated for CMT at our outpatient clinic from January 2014 to May 2021. The included patients were divided into three groups (groups 1, 2, and 3

Perineural Injection Therapy for Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain: A Novel Management Approach.

Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) significantly interferes with upper limb rehabilitation and reduces the function and quality of life in stroke patients. Perineural injection therapy (PIT) offers a regenerative approach by targeting potential pain-generating nerves utilizing dextrose. The effectiveness of PIT in HSP remains underexplored. This case series involved five stroke patients diagnosed with HSP during post-stroke inpatient rehabilitation. Their pain was not responding to analgesics and physical modalities, causing poor rehabilitation participation. All patients received the same PIT reg

Case Report: Flossing intervention for chronic upper limb spasticity after childhood-onset stroke.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb spastic paralysis after stroke often limits functional use of the affected hand and restricts activities of daily living, particularly in cases with long-standing impairment following childhood-onset stroke. Although various interventions for spasticity have been reported, many require specialized equipment or invasive procedures, which may limit long-term and home-based use. Flossing intervention, which involves compressive wrapping with an elastic band combined with movement, has recently been introduced in musculoskeletal practice; however, its application for post-st

Preoperative cryotherapy use in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Unrelieved postoperative pain may impair rehabilitation, compromise functional outcomes, and lead to patient dissatisfaction. Preemptive multimodal analgesic techniques may improve outcomes after surgery. We hypothesized that patients using preoperative cryotherapy plus a standardized postoperative treatment plan will have lower pain scores and require less pain medication compared with patients receiving a standardized postoperative treatment plan alone after arthroscopically assisted anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). A total of 53 consecutive patients undergoing arthroscopica

Pharmacoacupuncture for the Treatment of Frozen Shoulder: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Frozen shoulder (FS) is one of the most challenging shoulder disorders for patients and clinicians. Its symptoms mainly include any combination of stiffness, nocturnal pain, and limitation of active and passive glenohumeral joint movement. Conventional treatment options for FS are physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, injection therapy, and arthroscopic capsular release, but adverse and limited effects continue to present problems. As a result, pharmacoacupuncture (PA) is getting attention as an alternative therapy for patients with FS. PA is a new form of acupunc

Aggressive paediatric camptodactyly: The evolution of a proposed treatment algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: It is a long-established teaching to avoid operating on camptodactyly unless there is a failure of non-operative treatment, such as serial splinting and hand therapy, and there is an established proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) contracture of 60°; a recent systematic review reflects this continuing approach, with some papers advocating intervention with a lesser degree of contracture. AIM: To evaluate whether early flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) release, followed by gentle passive manipulation (GPM), will correct severe 'congenital' camptodactyly, if undertaken at an

Rehabilitation protocols after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: a survey of active members of the Korean Shoulder and Elbow Society.

BACKGROUND: Despite the clinical importance of rehabilitation after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, standardized postoperative rehabilitation protocols are yet to be established. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the current consensus on rehabilitation protocols after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair among active members of the Korean Shoulder and Elbow Society (KSES). We hypothesized that rehabilitation protocols would vary and that there might be a tendency to adjust rehabilitation based on the preoperative tear size and level of physical demand of the individual patient. [Proximalization of the tibial tuberosity as a salvage operation of the symptomatic patella baja].

OBJECTIVE: Improvement of flexion and thereby restoration of function of the knee joint as well as pain reduction by proximalization of the tibial tuberosity in combination with arthrolysis and release of the patellar retinaculum. INDICATIONS: Salvage surgery if conservative or arthroscopic treatment for a patella baja (Canton-Deschamps index < 0.6) has failed, especially in the case of mechanical and pain-related limitation of mobility. The timing for the surgery is crucial; surgery should only be performed after the end of the inflammatory phase and fibrosis of the patella ligament is compl

Heterotopic ossification revisited.

Heterotopic ossification is the abnormal formation of mature lamellar bone within extraskeletal soft tissues where bone does not exist. Heterotopic ossification has been classified into posttraumatic, nontraumatic or neurogenic, and myositis ossificans progressiva or fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive. The pathophysiology is unknown. Anatomically, heterotopic ossification occurs outside the joint capsule without disrupting it. The new bone can be contiguous with the skeleton but generally does not involve the periosteum. Three-phase technetium-99m (99mTc) methylene diphosphonate bone scan i

Surgical treatment of postburn heterotopic ossification around the elbow: Three case reports.

RATIONALE: Heterotopic ossification (HO), which is defined as the formation of new bone in tissues that do not normally ossify, is an infrequent yet debilitating complication of burns. Herein, we report three patients who suffered from elbow HO after burn injury due to a dust explosion event. This is a case report that includes the most cases involved in a single mass casualty incident in the presented literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: Case 1: A 28-year-old man presented with second-to-third degree 88% total body surface area (TBSA) burns after the explosion event. He complained of decreased prog

Therapeutic effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on patients with spastic cerebral palsy and Rett syndrome: clinical and ultrasonographic findings.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is reportedly effective for improving spasticity and motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Because late-stage Rett syndrome has a similar presentation, this study aimed to investigate the effects of ESWT on these two diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with spastic CP and Rett syndrome received 1500 impulses of ESWT at 4 Hz and 0.1 mJ/mm2, on their spastic legsonce weekly for a total of 12 weeks. Outcomes were assessed before and 4 and 12 weeks after ESWT. Clinical assessments included the Modified Ashworth Sca

Rehabilitation following surgery for flexor tendon injuries of the hand.

BACKGROUND: Various rehabilitation treatments may be offered following surgery for flexor tendon injuries of the hand. Rehabilitation often includes a combination of an exercise regimen and an orthosis, plus other rehabilitation treatments, usually delivered together. The effectiveness of these interventions remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of different rehabilitation interventions after surgery for flexor tendon injuries of the hand. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trau

Heterotopic ossification of the elbow treated with surgical resection: risk factors, bony ankylosis, and complications.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification is the most common extrinsic cause of elbow contracture and may lead to clinically important stiffness, and rarely, complete bony ankylosis. Surgery sometimes is performed to treat this problem, and published reports differ regarding the factors that are associated with success or failure after this operation and whether the procedure is effective for patients with elbow ankylosis. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We wished (1) to identify potential patient characteristics and modifiable risk factors that are associated with improvements in ROM after surgery for hetero

A comparison of two manual physical therapy approaches and electrotherapy modalities for patients with knee osteoarthritis: A randomized three arm clinical trial.

A broad spectrum of physical therapy exercise programs provides symptom relief and functional benefit for patients with knee OA. Manual physical therapy, including tailored exercise programs provide relatively higher level benefit that persists to one year. It is currently unknown if there are important differences in the effects of different manual physical therapy techniques for patients with knee OA and there are virtually no studies comparing manual physical therapy and electrotherapy modalities. The aim of the study was to compare long-term results between three treatment groups (mobiliza
