Fgf8 dosage regulates jaw shape and symmetry through pharyngeal-cardiac tissue relationships.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetries in craniofacial anomalies are commonly observed. In the facial skeleton, the left side is more commonly and/or severely affected than the right. Such asymmetries complicate treatment options. Mechanisms underlying variation in disease severity between individuals as well as within individuals (asymmetries) are still relatively unknown. RESULTS: Developmental reductions in fibroblast growth factor 8 (Fgf8) have a dosage dependent effect on jaw size, shape, and symmetry. Further, Fgf8 mutants have directionally asymmetric jaws with the left side being more affected than

Segmentally arranged basaloid follicular hamartomas with osseous, dental and cerebral anomalies: a distinct syndrome.

A 39-year-old man presented with multiple basaloid follicular hamartomas involving the right side of his body in a systematized pattern following Blaschko's lines. His right leg was 22.5 cm shorter than the left, and rudimentary pre-axial polydactyly was noted on the left hand and the right foot. The teeth of the right maxilla were hypoplastic. DNA analysis of blood lymphocytes and fibroblasts from lesional skin did not reveal any mutation in the Patched gene. On account of this case and of 8 similar cases found in th e literature, the spectrum of a distinct syndrome is delineated. Ipsilateral

True median cleft of the upper lip associated with three pedunculated club-shaped skin masses.

A rare case of true median cleft of the upper lip associated with three skin masses is reported. While 114 cases of median cleft of the upper lip have been reported, in our literature review we found only 1 case, reported by Sharma, in which the median cleft was associated with skin masses. The embryology of this case is also discussed.

The Wagner-Stickler syndrome complex.

The Wagner's vitreoretinal degeneration is a condition characterized by myopia, cataract, optically empty vitreous cavity and retinal breaks leading to retinal detachments with poor surgical prognosis. Several extraocular manifestations were reported to be associated with these eye findings and various syndromes were delineated describing sensorineural deafness, orofacial anomalies and skeletal dysplasias. There is enough evidence to suggest that this condition results from a phenotypic variability of genic origin, transmitted as an irregular autosomal dominant trait. In the absence of knowled

Ankyloglossum superius syndrome.

The case of a male infant with the ankyloglossum superius syndrome is documented. In addition to oromandibular and limb malformations, the patient had extensive jejunal and ileal atresia. The cause of this syndrome remains unknown, but both genetic and intrauterine environmental factors have been suggested. There was no family history of other affected relatives, but throughout her pregnancy the mother had received imipramine, diazepam, chlorpromazine, and meclizine.

Oropharyngeal teratoma, oral duplication, cervical diplomyelia and anencephaly in a 22-week fetus: A review of the craniofacial teratoma syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal teratoma may occur by itself or together with other craniofacial malformations, most commonly cleft palate. Oropharyngeal teratoma may be also seen in association with frontonasal dysplasia and/or various degrees of craniofacial duplication. The nosology of these sporadic disorders is poorly defined. CASE AND REVIEW: We report on a 22-week fetus with a protruding nasopharyngeal teratoma, partial oral duplication, anencephaly, multiple costo-vertebral segmentation defects, and cervical diplomyelia. A review of the literature identified 48 patients published from 1931

Chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis van Creveld syndrome): a report of three cases with review of literature.

Chondroectodermal dysplasia is a rare mesenchymal - ectodermal dysplasia first described in 1940 by Richard W.B. Ellis and Simon van Creveld now known as Ellis van Creveld syndrome. It is also known as Mesvectodermal dysplasia. Majority of cases were characteristically seen in one particular inbred population from the Amish community of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The syndrome manifests with several skeletal anomalies, oral mucosal and dental anomalies, congenital cardiac defects and nail dysplasia. Ellis van Creveld syndrome may be differentiated from other chondrodystrophies like

Trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome (Hecht-Beals' syndrome): case report and literature review.

The trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome (TPS) is a rare condition inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable expressivity. Clinically the syndrome is characterized by decreased ability to open the mouth and curvature of the fingers at the level of interphalangic joints while attempting dorsiflexion of the wrist (pseudocamptodactyly). A 6-year-old male patient from Guatemala with this syndrome is presented. The surgical treatment consisted of bilateral coronoid amputation to resolve the pseudotrismus. The procedure was successful and the patient achieved normal function.

[Duplication of mouth and mandible. Apropos of a case].

We report a case of duplication of the mouth, tongue, mandible, and cervical spine in a female neonate. Findings in this patient were somewhat different from those in previously reported cases. Clinical, radiological and therapeutic features in this localized duplication are reviewed. Embryologic hypotheses include defective midline development, such as in the split notochord syndrome, and development of totipotent cells from the first branchial arch.

Oral and craniofacial morphology of a patient with Larsen syndrome.

A case is reported of a 15 years old Chinese female with Larsen syndrome exhibiting many characteristic facial and skeletal features plus hitherto unreported orofacial anomalies including delayed dental development; hypodontia affecting all the permanent canines, second and third molars, maxillary lateral incisors and second premolars; morphological anomalies of the maxillary first premolars and molars; a class 3 skeletal pattern and reduced upper facial height. Cephalometric radiographs showed the skull bones to have an appearance similar to that of osteopetrosis.

Popliteal pterygium syndrome.

Popliteal pterygium syndrome is rare, with 50 cases described in the literature. Three additional cases are reported. The syndrome includes a popliteal web extending from the ischium to the heel associated with toenail dysplasia, eventual deformities of the foot and toes, and oral cavity abnormalities, such as cleft palate or lip pits. The main orthopedic problem is a severe flexion contracture of the knee and an equinus foot. Surgical treatment consists of resection of the web. A technical problem emerges on liberating or reconstructing the sciatic nerve or its branches, which are sometimes i

Antenatal diagnosis of complete facial duplication--a case report of a rare craniofacial defect.

We report a case of the prenatal sonographic detection of facial duplication, the diprosopus abnormality, in a twin pregnancy. The characteristic sonographic features of the condition include duplication of eyes, mouth, nose and both mid- and anterior intracranial structures. A heart-shaped abnormality of the cranial vault should prompt more detailed examination for other supportive features of this rare condition.

Open-mouth jaw locking in a 5-year-old Persian cat: a case report.

Open-mouth jaw locking is an uncommon condition in feline patients. A 5-year-old neutered male Persian cat was evaluated for an acute inability to close its mouth and ptyalism. The general physical examination was unremarkable. A complete oral examination revealed a reduced vertical range of motion, as well as an asymmetric malocclusion with severe displacement of the mandibles to the left. Advanced diagnostic imaging included computed tomography (CT), which revealed a typical brachycephalic conformation, skeletal malocclusion and a bilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) subluxation, with the

A novel skilled-reaching impairment in paw supination on the "good" side of the hemi-Parkinson rat improved with rehabilitation.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural abnormalities ascribed to the loss of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA). Symptoms similar to the human condition can be produced in the rat by DA-depleting 6-hydroxydopamine injections made into the nigrostriatal system. After a unilateral lesion, the rat symptoms include sensory and motor impairments and turning biases reflecting motor abnormalities to the contralateral-to-depletion side of the body. In addition, a number of studies on skilled reaching report impairments in the use of the ipsilateral limb. It is su

Lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital syndrome.

The Lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome is an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with marked variability of inheritance. It is characterized by abnormalities of lacrimal and/or salivary system, anomalies of ears, teeth and limbs. Persistent dry mouth and enamel hypoplasia cause serious dental effects. Here, a case of LADD syndrome, its clinical spectrum and accompanying therapeutic challenges is discussed.
