Support Groups for Caregivers of Adolescents With HIV - A Qualitative Analysis of Caregivers' Experiences in Mozambique.

BackgroundFamilies are the primary source of care during adolescence, when HIV management is shared between adolescents with HIV (AHIV) and caregivers. Peer support interventions that improve caregiver well-being may strengthen AHIV self-management.MethodsWe conducted qualitative interviews with caregivers of AHIV to explore how peer group participation influenced support for AHIV self-management. This was a substudy from the CombinADO trial, which, from 2018 to 2023, evaluated an intervention to improve viral suppression among adolescents and young adults with HIV in Mozambique.Results53 care

Access and usage of malaria control measures by women of reproductive age in Mopeia Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Malaria presents a disproportionate threat to pregnant women, making access to malaria prevention tools crucial for controlling the disease in this vulnerable population. METHODS: This prospective descriptive study targeted women of reproductive age (13-49 years old) living in the Mopeia district, a high malaria endemic area in Zambezia province, Mozambique. As part of the BOHEMIA cluster randomized trial, the study included a simplified and full census to collect data on socio-demographic, socio-economic and household factors, health status, and malaria prevention tools from the

Estimating the cost for obstetric fistula repair in hospitals of Mozambique: a low-income country.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is incident and prevalent in low-income countries. Globally, about 100,000 women develop fistula annually. In Mozambique, more than 2,000 fistulas are reported annually. A national strategy to combat obstetric fistula has been implemented in Mozambique from 2012-2020. This strategy is under review, making it opportune to generate evidence that reflects the course of the strategy implemented to subsidize/optimize the definition of priorities of the new strategy to achieve universal health coverage. In Mozambique, information on the costs incurred to treat fistula i

Evaluation of a peer-support, 'mentor mother' program in Gaza, Mozambique; a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Retention in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programs is critical to reduce vertical transmission. To addresses challenges with retention, Mozambique launched a peer-support program in 2018, in which HIV-positive mothers provide adherence support as mentor mothers (MMs) for HIV-positive pregnant and lactating women and HIV-exposed and infected children. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative evaluation was conducted across nine facilities in Gaza Province to assess the acceptability and barriers to implementation of the mentor mother program (MMP) among those receivi

Early effects of COVID-19 on maternal and child health service disruption in Mozambique.

UNLABELLED: This article is part of the Research Topic 'Health Systems Recovery in the Context of COVID-19 and Protracted Conflict'. INTRODUCTION: After the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, more than 184 million cases and 4 million deaths had been recorded worldwide by July 2021. These are likely to be underestimates and do not distinguish between direct and indirect deaths resulting from disruptions in health care services. The purpose of our research was to assess the early impact of COVID-19 in 2020 and early 2021 on maternal and child healthcare service delivery at

Cyclone Idai as a Trigger for Pellagra Outbreak in Nhamatanda, Mozambique: A Case-Control Study.

In mid-June 2019, 3 months after cyclone Idai landfall in Mozambique, health authorities of Nhamatanda district reported an outbreak of Pellagra. Applying a mixed-method protocol, we carried out an investigation to characterize cases of pellagra, identify the associated factors for the outbreak using a case-control study, and explore the perceived impact on food security (availability, access, and usage) before and after Idai. We collected data from 121 cases and 121 controls and conducted in-depth interviews with 69 heads of households. The cases were more likely to be female (P < 0.01) and l

Polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum K13-propeller in Angola and Mozambique after the introduction of the ACTs.

We report the presence of SNPs in Plasmodium falciparum K13-propeller gene in two African countries, Angola and Mozambique, where malaria is a serious public health problem. Samples were collected before and after ACT introduction as first-line treatment. In each country 50 samples collected before and 50 after ACT introduction were analysed. A total of three different mutations (R471R and R575R in Angola and V494I in Mozambique) were identified in five samples, all collected after the introduction of ACT. The R471R mutation detected in Angola has already been reported in Africa (DR-Congo and

Socio-environmental variables and transmission risk of lymphatic filariasis in central and northern Mozambique.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is endemic in Mozambique, where it is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti with Culex quinquefasciatus as the main vector. It affects approximately 10% of the population (2 million) with about 16 million at risk. Prevalence rates in 40 out of 65 districts that together comprise the four endemic provinces Niassa, Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Zambezia were analysed with the aim of elucidating the socio-environmental variables influencing the transmission. The levels of prevalence were divided into six ranks and certain climatic, environmental and social factors were considered i

Geographic distribution and prevalence of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths among schoolchildren in Mozambique.

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are most prevalent in developing countries. In Mozambique, the first and only national survey of the distribution and prevalence of schistosomiasis and STHs was conducted in 1952 and 1957. Only occasional surveys in restricted areas have been conducted since the 1950s. The objective of our survey was to update information on the geographic distribution and prevalence of schistosomiasis and STHs in this country. During August 2005-June 2007, the Schistosomiasis and STH Laboratory of National Institutes of Health of the Ministry of Health und

The cost-effectiveness of introducing hepatitis B vaccine into infant immunization services in Mozambique.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the cost-effectiveness of introducing hepatitis B vaccine into routine infant immunization services in Mozambique, which took place in the year 2001. METHODS: A decision analytic model was used to estimate the impact of hepatitis B vaccination. This model was developed for the WHO to estimate the global burden of disease from hepatitis B. Cost data of vaccine delivery and medical treatment related to hepatitis B infection were collected for the analysis. FINDINGS: The introduction of hepatitis B vaccine has increased the annual budget for immunization services by appro

Mobile money, and the welfare of women and youths in fragile states: Evidence from Mozambique.

Mobile money has emerged as a low-cost financial instrument with strong potential to improve livelihoods, particularly in economies with weak formal financial systems. This paper examines the welfare effects on women and youth in Mozambique, a fragile, post-conflict country exposed to climate shocks. Using 900 household observations from the 2019 FinScope Survey and an instrumental variable approach to address selection bias, the study provides robust evidence on welfare outcomes. Results show that mobile money improves household welfare, with effects driven by active usage rather than mere ac

Household storm damage limits use of and access to insecticide treated bednets in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Cyclone Idai was one of the most destructive cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere. Malaria prevention is not part of cyclone response, but housing damage has been shown to increase malaria risk. AIM: To assess the extent to which housing damage led to insecticide treated net (ITN) damage, thus compounding malaria risk. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Sussundenga village. This analysis focused on household damage and ITN use in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai. Generalised estimating equations logistic regression models were used to identify factors ass

Animal rabies in Mozambique: a retrospective study with focus on dog rabies and vaccination coverage.

Rabies, a highly preventable zoonotic disease, remains a major public health problem in Mozambique with approximately 50 human fatalities per annum due to dog-mediated rabies. This study analysed animal rabies cases and dog vaccination coverage, confirmed between 2001 and 2021, based on history, clinical signs, and/or diagnostic tests. During this period, 955 animal rabies cases were reported with the highest occurrence in Maputo (n = 283; 29.6%) and the lowest from Zambézia and Sofala provinces (n = 30; 3.1%). A significant number of animal rabies cases occurred in 2005 (n = 180; 18.8%). Most

The development and implementation of a community engagement strategy to improve maternal health in southern Mozambique.

Delays to seek medical help can contribute to maternal deaths particularly in community settings at home or on the road to a health facility. Community engagement (CE) can improve care-seeking behaviours and complements community-based interventions strengthening maternal health. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process undertaken to develop and implement a large-scale community engagement strategy in rural southern Mozambique. The CE strategy was developed within the context of the "Community-Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia" (NCT01911494) conducted between 2015-2017 in south
