Trichosporon beigelii causing oral mucositis and fungemia: report of one case.

A 23-month-old boy, a victim of acute myelomonocytic leukemia (AML), was admitted for chemotherapy. On the eighth hospital day, he started a one-week course of chemotherapy with agents of epirubicin and cytosine arabinoside. Unfortunately, persistent neutropenia, deteriorating diarrhea and intermittently spiking fever developed from the sixteenth hospital day. Initially, ceftazidime and amikacin were empirically utilized. Blood culture yielded Klebsiella pneumoniae and the fever subsided for one day. Unfortunately, oral mucositis and catheter-induced phlebitis developed subsequently. Subsequen

A convenient method for guarding against localized mucositis during radiation therapy.

Metal restorations, such as full gold crowns and dental implants, can cause forward and back scatter radiation during radiation therapy with a dose enhancement to adjacent tissues. Mucositis, one of the most common complications of the radiation treatment of oral, as well as other head and neck malignancies can result. A method for constructing a buccolingual guard in the clinical setting using hydroplastic material is described. The guard can be easily oriented and adapted to an existing radiation stent, adding positional stability and patient comfort. When adequate thickness of material is u

In defense of mucosal surfaces. Regulation and manipulation of the mucosal immune system.

The mucosal immune system defends the host against pathogens, most of which invade through mucosal surfaces. Antigen sampling in the mucosal immune system in the intestine occurs constantly in specialized inductive sites known as gut associated lymphoreticular tissue or GALT. Antigen-primed cells then migrate to effector sites in the gut lamina propria and epithelium as well as to other mucosal tissues. A variety of strategies are being pursued to develop effective oral vaccines that will protect mucosal surfaces. Some approaches involve recently identified mucosal adjuvants, the best known of

In vivo mucosal uptake, mucosal transfer and retention of iron in mice.

An improved and sensitive method for studying iron absorption in mice with alterations in body iron stores is described. Mice with varying iron status were given a double isotope-labelled test dose containing 59Fe and 51Cr as a non-absorbable indicator, via an oroesophageal needle. Using a whole-body counter it was possible to measure in vivo the initial mucosal iron uptake and long-term iron retention and to calculate mucosal iron transfer. A significant difference was demonstrated between normal and both anaemic and dietary iron-loaded mice with regard to the various steps of iron absorption

Comparison of salsalate and aspirin on mucosal injury and gastroduodenal mucosal prostaglandins.

The effects of a 7.5-day course of orally administered salsalate (3.0 g/day), aspirin (3.9 g/day), or placebo on gastroduodenal mucosal injury, mucosal prostaglandin content, and plasma prostaglandin concentrations in healthy, asymptomatic human volunteers were examined. Mean serum salicylate concentrations after these doses of salsalate and aspirin were nearly identical (approximately 15 mg/dL). When the gastroduodenal mucosa was assessed endoscopically 1 hour after the final dose of medication, there was minimal mucosal injury in placebo-treated or salsalate-treated subjects and considerable

Abdominal compartment syndrome following chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal mucositis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a life-threatening condition typically associated with trauma, major surgery, or acute abdominal pathology. Its occurrence in oncology patients, particularly as a complication of chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal mucositis, is exceedingly rare. This report presents a unique case of ACS triggered by mucosal injury following chemotherapy, complicated by septic shock and multiorgan failure, in a patient with lung cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old male with lung cancer underwent platinum-etoposide chemotherapy. Following his fourth cy

Prevalence and Predisposing Factors of Periapical Mucositis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: Periapical mucositis (PAM) is defined as inflammation of the periapical tissues and localized oedema of the maxillary sinus mucosa, typically resulting from periradicular disease. Radiographically on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), PAM presents as mucosal thickening or a dome-shaped soft tissue expansion along the floor of the maxillary sinus, adjacent to the affected root apex. Although several studies have evaluated PAM, their findings vary considerably. This study aims (1) to evaluate the prevalence of PAM in maxillary posterior teeth amongst patients at NYU College of Dentistry,

Salivary metabolite-based prediction of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis and candidiasis.

OBJECTIVES: Oral toxicities affect a high proportion of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients receiving radiotherapy, lacking reliable predictive biomarkers for incidence and severity. We investigated salivary metabolites and metabolic pathways as non-invasive predictors of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM) and candidiasis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy were prospectively studied. Saliva samples of 45 HNC patients and 30 controls were analysed using NMR spectroscopy, and patients were assessed for oral complications during treatment. RESULTS: Significant met

Case Report: Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced rash and mucositis in a child.

RATIONALE: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is a common pathogen responsible for pediatric community-acquired pneumonia. MP infection can also induce extrapulmonary manifestations, including mucocutaneous eruptions. Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM) is a relatively newly described entity distinct from erythema multiforme (EM), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). However, MIRM remains underrecognized, with limited cases reported in China. PATIENT CONCERNS: A previously healthy 10-year-old boy presented with fever, cough, severe mucositis (oral

Daikenchuto improves methotrexate-induced chronic small intestinal mucositis by promoting angiogenesis.

AIM: Chronic small-intestinal mucositis (CIM) is a severe gastrointestinal complication that has limited treatment options. This study investigated the potential therapeutic effects of Daikenchuto (DKT), a traditional medicine, on mitigating methotrexate (MTX)-induced CIM in rats. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to four groups: control, MTX, DKT-MTX, and DKT. CIM was induced by intraperitoneal administration of MTX (10 mg/kg every 6 days), while DKT (2.7% wt/wt) was orally administered via feed. The surviving rats were euthanized on day 60. Rat intestinal epithelial cells (IEC

Oral Mucositis Management in Children under Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review.

Children undergoing antineoplastic treatment often present severe side effects due to the dosage and duration of treatments, with oral mucositis emerging as one of the most prevalent and painful inflammatory conditions. There is a growing body of evidence on therapeutic interventions such as cryotherapy, low-level laser therapy, and natural compounds for this condition. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and compare therapies for the management of cancer treatment-induced oral mucositis in pediatric patients. From 2655 articles obtained in initial searches, 39 articles were cons
