Emotion regulation by attentional deployment moderates bilinguals' language-dependent emotion differences.

Unbalanced bilinguals react differently to emotional stimuli in their first (L1) and second (L2) language. However, the size and direction of the emotion difference varies across emotions and tasks, so that its causes are controversial. Therefore, we investigated if the attentional resources bilinguals allocate to emotion processing moderate their language-dependent emotions. In two experiments, we crossed language and emotion regulation. Study 1 compared effects of distraction and concentration on bilingual emotion-word valence ratings. Study 2 induced positive emotion-focused rumination (or

Automaticity of lexical access in deaf and hearing bilinguals: Cross-linguistic evidence from the color Stroop task across five languages.

The well-known Stroop interference effect has been instrumental in revealing the highly automated nature of lexical processing as well as providing new insights to the underlying lexical organization of first and second languages within proficient bilinguals. The present cross-linguistic study had two goals: 1) to examine Stroop interference for dynamic signs and printed words in deaf ASL-English bilinguals who report no reliance on speech or audiological aids; 2) to compare Stroop interference effects in several groups of bilinguals whose two languages range from very distinct to very similar

Principles underlying the Bilingual Aphasia Test (BAT) and its uses.

The Bilingual Aphasia Test (BAT) is designed to be objective (so it can be administered by a lay native speaker of the language) and equivalent across languages (to allow for a comparison between the languages of a given patient as well as across patients from different institutions). It has been used not only with aphasia but also with any condition that results in language impairment (Alzheimer's, autism, cerebellar lesions, developmental language disorders, mild cognitive impairment, motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, vascular dementia, etc.). It has also been used for r

Dyslexia and bilingual children--does recent research assist identification?

This paper analyses some of the recent research into dyslexia in relation to monolingual and bilingual children. It focuses on the phonological approach to the identification of dyslexia. It reviews the literature on those aspects of phonological development which allow dyslexic children to be identified at increasingly younger ages. The literature on the phonological development of children who speak English as an additional language, and who are bilingual or multilingual, is then reviewed to compare the possibilities for identification of these children in comparison with those for monolingu

Artificial intelligence in paediatric chest imaging: applications, challenges, and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric chest imaging is central to diagnosing respiratory and cardiopulmonary disease, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where pneumonia remains a leading cause of childhood mortality and radiology expertise is scarce. Artificial intelligence (AI) could expand access, standardise quality and support task-shifting in these "diagnostic deserts," yet most systems are trained and validated on adult datasets from high-income settings, and paediatric radiographs form only a small minority of major public training cohorts - raising concerns about safety, general

Enhancing the Readability of Online Pediatric Cataract Education Materials: A Comparative Study of Large Language Models.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess large language models (LLMs) for enhancing the readability of online patient education materials (PEMs) on pediatric cataracts through multilingual adaptation, content retrieval, and prompt engineering. METHODS: This study included 103 PEMs presented in different languages and retrieved from diverse resources. Three LLMs (ChatGPT-4o, Gemini 2.0, and DeepSeek-R1) were used for content improvement. Readability was assessed for both the original and converted PEMs with multiple formulas. Different prompt engineering strategies for LLMs were also t

From the laboratory to the classroom: Rethinking ERP methods in second language acquisition.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) are widely used to study second language acquisition. However, ERP research has largely remained confined to laboratory paradigms and has had limited impact on second language teaching and assessment. A case in point are early studies which have shown that language instruction can shape neural responses, yet this line of work has not been developed or applied further. Current ERP studies often rely on loosely defined constructs such as instruction and proficiency, frequently operationalized through task-internal measures that overlap with the linguistic features

[The importance of mother tongue for unaccompanied minors].

Unaccompanied minors are teenagers forced to grow up too fast. In this race to become an adult, some are faced with the challenge of learning a new language and building skills around it, to the detriment of their mother tongue. When it comes to learning a new language, even in adolescence, the mother tongue remains the foundation on which new acquisitions are built. In the context of encounters with unaccompanied minors, valuing early language skills, particularly when learning a second language is at risk, is a safety valve in the face of multiple paradoxical injunctions.

Difficulties in decoupling articulatory gestures in L2 phonemic sequences: the case of Mandarin listeners' perceptual deletion of English post-vocalic laterals.

Nonnative or second language (L2) perception of segmental sequences is often characterised by perceptual modification processes, which may "repair" a nonnative sequence that is phonotactically illegal in the listeners' native language (L1) by transforming the sequence into a sequence that is phonotactically legal in the L1. Often repairs involve the insertion of phonetic materials (epenthesis), but we focus, here, on the less-studied phenomenon of perceptual deletion of nonnative phonemes by testing L1 Mandarin listeners' perception of post-vocalic laterals in L2 English using the triangulatin

Concepts Are Restructured During Language Contact: The Birth of Blue and Other Color Concepts in Tsimane'-Spanish Bilinguals.

Words and the concepts they represent vary across languages. Here we ask if mother-tongue concepts are altered by learning a second language. What happens when speakers of Tsimane', a language with few consensus color terms, learn Bolivian Spanish, a language with more terms? Three possibilities arise: Concepts in Tsimane' may remain unaffected, or they may be remapped, either by Tsimane' terms taking on new meanings or by borrowing Bolivian-Spanish terms. We found that adult bilingual speakers (n = 30) remapped Tsimane' concepts without importing Bolivian-Spanish terms into Tsimane'. All Tsim

Bilingual Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Scoping Review of Assessment and Treatment Practices.

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by speech and/or language impairment with relatively spared cognition. Research investigating behavioral speech-language intervention and methods for cognitive-linguistic assessment in PPA has predominantly centered around monolingual speakers. This gap hinders the widespread adoption of evidence-based approaches and exacerbates the inequities faced by culturally and linguistically diverse populations living with PPA. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review synthesizes the current evidence for assessment and tr

Person-specific connectivity mapping uncovers differences of bilingual language experience on brain bases of attention in children.

Bilingualism influences children's cognition, yet bilinguals vary greatly in their dual-language experiences. To uncover sources of variation in bilingual and monolingual brain function, the present study used standard analysis and innovative person-specific connectivity models combined with a data-driven grouping algorithm. Children (ages 7-9; N = 52) completed a visuo-spatial attention task while undergoing functional near-infrared spectroscopy neuroimaging. Both bilingual and monolingual groups performed similarly, and engaged bilateral frontal and parietal regions. However, bilinguals show

Statistical analysis of interpretable linguistic features for MCI detection in bilingual speech.

INTRODUCTION: Early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is critical for intervention and dementia prevention. Interpretable linguistic features may offer transparent, cross-linguistic markers yet remain underexplored in bilingual dataset contexts. METHODS: Using the TAUKADIAL Challenge dataset, which includes English and Chinese picture descriptions, we extracted 93 language-specific linguistic features with the Efficient Linguistic Feature Extraction for Natural Language Datasets (ELFEN) package and 141 language-agnostic linguistic features using the Comprehensive Handcrafted Lingui

Standardising written informed consent forms to improve patient care: a quality improvement project.

Informed consent is a critical component of patient-centred care, yet variability in its delivery can undermine patient understanding, satisfaction and autonomy. In practice, however, the process is often hindered by high clinical workloads, time pressures and the absence of a standardised approach, which can lead to incomplete explanations, variability in practice and reduced patient comprehension. This project aimed to improve patient understanding and satisfaction with bedside procedures by introducing a standardised informed consent process. This study was conducted at Hamad General Hospita

A swarm-optimization based fusion model of sentiment analysis for cryptocurrency price prediction.

Social media has attracted society for decades due to its reciprocal and real-life nature. It influenced almost all societal entities, including governments, academics, industries, health, and finance. The Social Network generates unstructured information about brands, political issues, cryptocurrencies, and global pandemics. The major challenge is translating this information into reliable consumer opinion as it contains jargon, abbreviations, and reference links with previous content. Several ensemble models have been introduced to mine the enormous noisy range on social platforms. Still, th

Large language models for structured reporting in radiology: past, present, and future.

Structured reporting (SR) has long been a goal in radiology to standardize and improve the quality of radiology reports. Despite evidence that SR reduces errors, enhances comprehensiveness, and increases adherence to guidelines, its widespread adoption has been limited. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have emerged as a promising solution to automate and facilitate SR. Therefore, this narrative review aims to provide an overview of LLMs for SR in radiology and beyond. We found that the current literature on LLMs for SR is limited, comprising ten studies on the generative pre-trained tran

PURPOSE: To compare the accuracy and performance of the ChatGPT-4 and ChatGPT-4 Plus (OpenAI) models in different languages in terms of questions about retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: Within the scope of the study, 15 questions about ROP were asked of both models. The questions were asked in Turkish and English, and the answers were evaluated by clinicians at five levels: "incorrect," "inadequate," "adequate," "correct," and "very correct." The reliability of the responses was analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and quality scores were compared using the t-

Discourses of prejudice in the professions: the case of sign languages.

There is no evidence that learning a natural human language is cognitively harmful to children. To the contrary, multilingualism has been argued to be beneficial to all. Nevertheless, many professionals advise the parents of deaf children that their children should not learn a sign language during their early years, despite strong evidence across many research disciplines that sign languages are natural human languages. Their recommendations are based on a combination of misperceptions about (1) the difficulty of learning a sign language, (2) the effects of bilingualism, and particularly bimod
