The effects of muscle fatigue on neuromuscular function and anterior tibial translation in healthy knees.

We investigated the effect of quadriceps and hamstring muscle fatigue on anterior tibial translation and muscle reaction time in 10 healthy subjects. The six men and four women had an average age of 21.3 years and had no known pathologic knee conditions. Each patient underwent a knee examination, arthrometer measurements of tibial translation, subjective functional assessment, and an anterior tibial translation stress test before and after quadriceps and hamstring muscle-fatiguing exercise. The recruitment order of the lower extremity muscles in response to anterior tibial translation did not

Preferential fatigue of the rib cage muscles during inspiratory resistive loaded ventilation.

Because the inspiratory rib cage muscles are recruited during inspiratory resistive loaded breathing, we hypothesized that such loading would preferentially fatigue the rib cage muscles. We measured the pressure developed by the inspiratory rib cage muscles during maximal static inspiratory maneuvers (Pinsp) and the pressure developed by the diaphragm during maximal static open-glottis expulsive maneuvers (Pdimax) in four human subjects, both before and after fatigue induced by an inspiratory resistive loaded breathing task. Tasks consisted of maintaining a target esophageal pressure, breathin

Fatigue and contractile responses of rat hindlimb muscles following excessive dexamethasone administration.

Muscle weight, protein content and contractile performance (tetanic tension, fatigue and recovery) of extensor digitorum longus and soleus were investigated in rat following systemic administration of Dexamethasone (DX), 5 mg/kg/day for ten days. These animals showed marked reduction in food intake during the course of DX treatment. As a control, a group of food restricted (FR) rats receiving equal amount of food consumed by the DX treated rats was also studied along with the saline control group, to differentiate the effect of DX on muscle from that of dietary deficiency. There was a greater

Discovery of a Nicotinamide Phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) Activator for Improving Muscle Function and Alleviating Fatigue.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) plays a crucial role in cellular energy metabolism, and nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) is the key rate-limiting enzyme in the NAD+ biosynthesis. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of novel pyridine-based NAMPT activators to elevate NAD+ levels and counteract muscle fatigue. Among them, compound B11 demonstrated significant NAMPT activation activity, which effectively boosted NAD+ synthesis across multiple cell lines. Mechanistic studies revealed that compound B11 enhances glucose uptake and ATP production in C2C12 myotubes. In

Few sex-specific effects of fatigue on muscle synergies in a repetitive pointing task.

Previous studies have identified some sex differences in how individual muscles change their activation during repetitive multi-joint arm motion-induced fatigue. However, little is known about how indicators of multi-muscle coordination change with fatigue in males and females. Fifty-six (29 females) asymptomatic young adults performed a repetitive, forward-backward pointing task until scoring 8/10 on a Borg CR10 scale while surface electromyographic activity of upper trapezius, anterior deltoid, biceps brachii, and triceps brachii was recorded. Activation coefficient, synergy structure, and r

Diagnosing myasthenia gravis using orthoptic measurements: assessing extraocular muscle fatiguability.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing ocular myasthenia gravis (MG) can be challenging because serum antibodies are often not detected. We aimed to explore whether determining extraocular muscle (EOM) weakness using orthoptic measures, including an adapted Hess chart examination, can aid in diagnosing MG. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study among patients with acetylcholine receptor antibody positive MG (20 recently diagnosed, 19 chronic) and 14 seronegative MG patients. We compared orthoptic measures to 19 healthy and 18 disease controls with Graves orbitopathy, chronic progressive external ophthal

Psychophysical predictors of experimental muscle pain intensity following fatiguing calf exercise.

Musculoskeletal pain affects approximately 20% of the population worldwide and represents one of the leading causes of global disability. As yet, precise mechanisms underlying the development of musculoskeletal pain and transition to chronicity remain unclear, though individual factors such as sleep quality, physical activity, affective state, pain catastrophizing and psychophysical pain sensitivity have all been suggested to be involved. This study aimed to investigate whether factors at baseline could predict musculoskeletal pain intensity to an experimental delayed onset of muscle soreness

Muscle Fatigue in Response to Electrical Stimulation Pattern and Frequency in Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is widely used to induce functional movements for paralyzed muscles. However, rapid muscle fatigue during FES-induced muscle contractions limits FES clinical efficacy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate muscle fatigue response across stimulation patterns and frequencies during FES in able-bodied individuals and in those with spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN: Four stimulation protocols combining 20 and 40 Hz average frequency with either constant frequency trains (CFTs) or with doublet frequency trains (DFTs) were applied to the quadriceps of seven a

Surface-distributed low-frequency asynchronous stimulation delays fatigue of stimulated muscles.

INTRODUCTION: One important reason why functional electrical stimulation (FES) has not gained widespread clinical use is the limitation imposed by rapid muscle fatigue due to non-physiological activation of the stimulated muscles. We aimed to show that asynchronous low-pulse-rate (LPR) electrical stimulation applied by multipad surface electrodes greatly postpones the occurrence of muscle fatigue compared with conventional stimulation (high pulse rate, HPR). METHODS: We compared the produced force vs. time of the forearm muscles responsible for finger flexion in 2 stimulation protocols, LPR (

Isotonic mechanics of a pharyngeal dilator muscle and diaphragm in the rat before and after fatigue.

Pharyngeal and diaphragm muscles contract and relax in synergy, which is why it was decided to compare their mechanical performance throughout the overall load continuum. The effects of fatigue were also studied. The isotonic mechanics of rat sternohyoid (SH; n=10) and diaphragm (D; n=10) were investigated in vitro. Force and length were measured in muscles contracting from zero load up to isometry. Maximum isometric tension (Pmax), peak mechanical work (Wmax), maximum unloaded shortening velocity (vzL) and mechanical efficiency (eff(max)) were recorded. Data were obtained both at baseline and

Detection of fatigue in the isometric electrical activation of paralyzed hand muscles of persons with tetraplegia.

Paralyzed muscle fatigue is the eventual depression of force due to either prolonged or repetitive electrical stimulation of motor units. The robustness and safety of future functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems will rely on their ability to detect the onset of muscle fatigue. The relative degree of muscle activation can be estimated by monitoring the M-wave. The aim of this study was to test a proposed method of quantitative fatigue assessment that detects muscle force output and its corresponding M-wave measured concurrently. The detection of force and M-wave concurrently allows an

Intracellular calcium during fatigue of cane toad skeletal muscle in the absence of glucose.

Mechanisms of fatigue were studied in single muscle fibres of the cane toad (Bufo marinus) in which force, intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i), [Mg2+]i, glycogen and the rapidly releasable Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) were measured. Fatigue was produced by repeated tetani continued until force had fallen to 50%. Two patterns of fatigue in the absence of glucose were studied. In the first fatigue run force fell to 50% in 8-10 min. Fatigue runs were then repeated until force fell to 50% in < 3 min in the final fatigue run. Addition of extracellular glucose after the final fatigue run pr

Spectral analysis of the EMG and diaphragmatic muscle fatigue during periodic breathing in infants.

Periodic breathing occurs commonly in full-term and preterm infants. The mechanisms which switch breathing on and off within a cycle of periodic breathing are not certain. Since immature infants may experience diaphragmatic muscle fatigue, one potential switching mechanism is fatigue. Power spectra of the electromyogram, uncontaminated by the electrocardiograph artifact, were studied for evidence of diaphragmatic muscle fatigue during spontaneous periodic breathing in infants. A fall in the high-frequency (103-600 Hz) power and an increase in the low-frequency (23-47 Hz) power during periodic

Joint and multiplex recurrence network analysis of muscle coordination during fatigue progression using sEMG.

Muscle fatigue is recognized as a multi-muscle, coordination-driven phenomenon rather than an isolated single-muscle response. This study investigates whether joint and multiplex recurrence network (JMRN) features derived from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals capture fatigue-related changes in inter-muscle coordination during dynamic contractions. Signals are recorded from gastrocnemius medialis (GM), gastrocnemius lateralis (GL), and soleus (SOL) along with toe-force measurements of 40 male subjects (N = 40) during dynamic calf raise test (CRT) to exhaustion. Un-truncated sEMG bursts a

Upper Limb Fatigue Information Variation Analysis Based on Parallel Brain and Muscle Functional Networks.

PURPOSE: Muscle fatigue is accompanied by coordinated changes in both neuromuscular activation and cortical activity. Traditional fatigue assessment methods based on single physiological signals often fail to capture system-level reorganization of the brain-muscle control network. This study aims to characterize upper limb muscle fatigue by analyzing parallel functional networks derived from surface electromyography (sEMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals. METHODS: Sixteen healthy participants performed sustained isometric elbow flexion tasks under non-fatigued and fatigued conditions
