Strapped for Strength: A Comparison Study of Dynamometry Techniques to Evaluate Knee Extensor Strength in Inclusion Body Myositis.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Accurate measurement of knee-extensor strength in people with inclusion body myositis (IBM) is vital to track disease progression and provide a standardized outcome for clinical trials. Isokinetic dynamometers are the current gold standard tool for measuring knee-extensor strength. A less costly, more portable tool would have more widespread clinical and research applications. Current practice is to use handheld dynamometry, but there are concerns around the accuracy of this method as it relies on precise operator technique. This study investigates whether stabilization of t

Age-Related Reduction of Foot Intrinsic Muscle Function and the Relationship with Postural Stability in Old Adults.

INTRODUCTION: The risk of falls among the elderly significantly increases, which has become a serious public health concern. Falls can not only lead to serious complications such as fractures and brain injuries but also limit their mobility function, reducing quality of life. Foot intrinsic muscles (FIMs) are an essential part of foot core stability even overall postural stability. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aging on the function of FIMs and to explore the influence of FIMs on postural control in the elderly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 56 healthy old participants (60-75 years)

Assessing the Knee Extensor's Rate of Force Development Using a Fixed Handheld Dynamometer: An Inter- and Intrasession Reliability Study.

CONTEXT: The rate of force development (RFD), defined as the ability to rapidly generate muscle force, is commonly tested using an electromechanical dynamometer in isometric mode. However, these devices are expensive and not readily available. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the interrater reliability of a fixed handheld dynamometer to measure the knee extensors' RFD and provide reference values using the proposed method. DESIGN: This study used a cross-sectional study design. METHODS: Using a fixed handheld dynamometer (microFET2) and a 3-dimensional-printed adapter, we evaluated the

Practice day may be unnecessary prior to testing knee extensor strength in young healthy adults.

A practice session is common prior to strength testing. However, the benefits of practice have not been previously reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a practice session on peak torque, mean torque and between trial variability across three test days. We hypothesized that peak and mean torque would be higher and less variable the second and third test days than the first. Twenty-five healthy, young participants completed 3 maximal voluntary isometric and isokinetic knee extensions on three separate days. No difference in isometric torque was found between days 1

Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in People with Spinal Cord Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle force production is usually impaired in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). The use of high-intensity neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) strength training can help promote metabolically active lean muscle mass and, thus, increase muscle mass and improve physical health and quality of life (QoL). Nonetheless, NMES is usually used at low-stimulation intensities, and there is limited evidence on the effects of high-intensity NMES strength training into improving muscle force and mass, symptoms of spasticity, or physical health and QoL in people with SCI. METHODS:

Isokinetic strength and joint mobility asymmetries in oarside experienced oarsmen.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate oarside and nonoarside lower extremity asymmetries in isokinetic strength and joint mobility of port and starboard oarsmen. Peak torques of right and left extensors and flexors were measured on isokinetic dynamometer at angular velocities of 60 and 180°·s-1 in 12 starboard (n = 12; training age 5.55 ± 0.52 years) and 14 port (n = 14; training age 6.09 ± 0.95 years) well-trained male rowers. Mobility of the hip, knee, and ankle joints was measured using the Myrin flexometer, a modification of the Leighton flexometer. The findings indicate that

Finger force enslaving and surplus in spinal cord injury patients.

This study investigated the phenomena of finger enslaving, involuntary finger actions by non-intended fingers, and force deficit, smaller maximum force by all four fingers than the sum of individual finger maximum forces in individuals with cervical spinal cord injuries (SCI). A total of 16 subjects participated in this study: 8 with a cervical spinal cord injury and 8 controls. Each of the injured subjects had one paralyzed finger. The results showed that the efforts to produce force using any individual finger induced force production in all other fingers, suggesting finger force enslaving.

Mild-to-Moderate Hallux Valgus Does Not Decrease Ankle Muscle Strength in Middle-Aged Japanese Women: A Comparative Study.

Extreme hallux valgus has been documented to be related to lower functional ability and health-related quality of life. It also has a negative effect on foot structure and biomechanical characteristics, which in turn may affect muscle strength in the foot and ankle. Thus, the purposes of this study were to determine whether there is a difference of ankle muscle strength in varied hallux valgus deformities and to investigate correlations between hallux valgus angles and ankle muscle strength. Hallux valgus angles and ankle muscle strength data were collected from 31 middle-aged Japanese women.

Association of decreased hemoglobin levels with worse muscle mass and strength in community-dwelling older people.

We investigated the associations between red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb) levels, muscle properties, and muscle strength in community-dwelling older adults, and examined whether RBC count and Hb levels were linked to muscle strength through muscle mass and/or quality, and whether these relationships were influenced by physical activity. The study included 85 community-dwelling older adults (39 males; mean age 75.3 ± 6.7 years). The participants visited the laboratory in the morning for venous blood sampling to analyze blood biomarkers. Quadriceps femoris muscle thickness (MT, muscle

Change in lower limb isokinetic muscle strength of polio survivors over 5-year follow-up.

To evaluate the muscle strength of the lower limbs over time in polio survivors during 5 years of follow-up and to examine the rate of change in their muscle strength, we performed a prospective, longitudinal study of polio survivors (n = 63: 61 with postpolio syndrome) living in the community who participated voluntarily. Their isokinetic knee-extensor and knee-flexor muscle strength (peak torque) at angular velocities of 60 and 120 deg/sec, using a fixed dynamometer (Biodex) were measured over a 5-year period. At 5-year follow-up, approximately 90% of the subjects had decreased knee extensor

Eccentric exercise induces spatial changes in the mechanomyographic activity of the upper trapezius muscle.

In this study, we hypothesized that the recordings of multichannel mechanomyography (MMG) of the upper trapezius muscle would reveal spatially dependent manifestations in the presence of delayed onset muscle soreness occurring 24 hours after eccentric exercise (ECC). Sixteen participants performed high-intensity eccentric exercises (5 sets of 10 eccentric contractions at 100% of max elevation force) targeting the upper trapezius on their dominant side. Twelve accelerometers were attached to record MMG activity during submaximal exercise consisting of static and dynamic arm flexion and abductio
