It is known that a single bout of foam rolling (FR) or stretching can induce changes in range of motion (ROM) and performance in non-directly adjoining areas of the dorsal chain (i.e., remote effects). However, to date, it is not known if such effects exist following long-term interventions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the remote effects of a 7-week combined stretching and FR training intervention of the plantar foot sole. Thirty-eight recreational athletes were randomly assigned to either an intervention (n = 20) or control (n = 18) group. The intervention group perform

Adaptations to 6 weeks of supervised hamstring stretching training and its potential impact on symptoms of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) were studied in 10 young, untrained men with limited hamstrings flexibility. Participants performed unilateral flexibility training (experimental leg; EL) on an isokinetic dynamometer, while the contralateral limb acted as control (CL). Hip range of motion (ROM), passive, isometric, and concentric torques, active optimum angle, and biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscle thickness and ultrasound echo intensity were assessed both before and

Complete thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a loss of innervation to the abdominal muscles, which affects trunk stability and performance of activities of daily living from a sitting position. Respiratory function is also affected, leading to frequent pulmonary complications. Given the importance of trunk stability and respiratory function, we investigated the effects of electromyography triggered electrical stimulation (EMG-ES) applied to the abdominal muscles on sitting balance, respiratory functions and abdominal muscle thickness in individuals with complete thoracic SCI. This ran

This study reports the histochemical fiber type composition of the human hamstring muscles. Muscle specimens from necropsy specimens were obtained from seven locations in the hamstring, four locations in the quadriceps, and one location in the adductor magnus. The hamstring muscles are shown to have a relatively high proportion of Type II fibers. Type II fibers are more involved with exercise of higher intensity and force production and it is postulated that the hamstrings are capable of high intrinsic force production. The hamstrings are two-joint muscles and are, therefore, subject to increa

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to follow circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in response to severe muscle-damaging exercise.
METHODS: Young healthy men (N = 10) performed a bout of mechanically demanding stretch-shortening cycle exercise consisting of 200 drop jumps. Voluntary and electrically induced knee extension torque, serum BDNF levels, and IL-6 levels were measured before and for up to 7 days after exercise.
RESULTS: Muscle force decreased by up to 40% and did not recover by 24 hours after exercise. Serum BDNF was decreased 1 h

BACKGROUND: Hamstring flexibility can potentially affect the mobility and function of remote musculoskeletal areas, including the cervical spine and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), thereby increasing tension along the myofascial chain and potentially reducing mouth opening, contributing to orofacial discomfort. This review aims to inform clinical practice by exploring the integrated impact of these interventions within the framework of neuro-myofascial connectivity.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PEDro databases spanning the period from

This study aimed to compare the acute effects of static stretching (SS) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching on hamstrings flexibility and shear modulus. Sixteen recreationally active young volunteers participated in a randomized cross-over study. Participants underwent an aerobic warm-up (WU), followed by either SS or PNF stretching. Range of motion (RoM) during passive straight leg raise and active knee extension, as well as shear modulus of the biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles, were measured at baseline, post-WU, and post-stretching. Both stretch

BACKGROUND: Hamstring injuries are a common musculoskeletal disorder, particularly amongst athletes. Many factors have been associated with these injuries, including motor control and strength, soft tissue length and postural alignment. Well-established rehabilitation protocols are commonly used in the treatment of this condition, but their effectiveness remains questionable. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2007.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of all rehabilitation strategies employed to promote the return to full strength, range of movement and function o

Stiffness and pain occurring after eccentric exercise have been studied in human elbow flexor muscles. Increased muscle stiffness and flexion deformities of the elbow developed immediately after the exercise and were greatest 1-4 days later. Muscle tenderness and pain experienced during elbow extension developed more slowly but were both maximal at the same time as the muscle stiffness. EMG recordings at times when there was pain and flexion deformity showed the biceps to be electrically silent. This demonstrates that the pain was not due to sustained electrical activity in the muscle and the

Congestive heart failure (CHF) induces abnormal regulation of peripheral blood flow during exercise. Previous studies have suggested that a reflex from contracting muscle is disordered in this disease. However, there has been very little investigation of the muscle reflex regulating sympathetic outflows in CHF. Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced by the coronary artery ligation in rats. Echocardiography was performed to determine fractional shortening (FS), an index of the left ventricular function. We examined renal and lumbar sympathetic nerve activities (RSNA and LSNA, respectively) duri

Congenital muscular torticollis (wry neck) results from shortening of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and may lead to limitation of neck movement and craniofacial deformity. If conservative treatment is started early, with a regimen of passive stretching exercises and active strengthening of the contralateral muscle, about 95% of patients achieve an acceptable range of neck movement. The surgical management of patients who do not respond to physiotherapy remains controversial. Its aim is to provide a long-term, cosmetic restoration of neck mobility while minimizing the development of craniofaci

AIM: Defining the origins of muscle injury has important rehabilitation and exercise applications. However, current knowledge of muscle damage mechanics in human remains unclear in vivo. This study aimed to determine the relationships between muscle-tendon unit mechanics during maximal eccentric contractions and the extent of subsequent functional impairments induced by muscle damage.
METHODS: The length of the muscle-tendon unit, fascicles and tendinous tissues was continuously measured on the gastrocnemius medialis using ultrasonography, in time with torque, during 10 sets of 30 maximal ecc

This study explores the effectiveness of the Movement System Impairment (MSI) model compared to traditional physiotherapy for treating knee pain. Fifty patients with unilateral knee pain participated, with their femur, tibia, and knee alignment assessed in nine functional positions. Evaluations included the Tegner Activity Scale, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), muscle power, extensibility, and pain levels. Patients were randomly assigned to either the MSI treatment group, which focused on identifying and correcting faulty movements, or a routine physiotherapy group that re
