[Symptomatic approach to musculoskeletal dysfunction and chronic pelvic and perineal pain].

INTRODUCTION: Clinical examination of a patient with chronic pelvic and perineal pain often demonstrates muscle hypertonia or muscle contracture sometimes associated with local tenderness or real muscle trigger points. It is sometimes very difficult to determine whether this muscle pain detected on clinical examination is the cause or a consequence of the pain. The purpose of this article is to review musculoskeletal dysfunction in the context of chronic pelvic and perineal pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Review of the literature devoted to musculoskeletal aspects of pelvic and perineal pain. RE

Interventions to improve adherence to exercise for chronic musculoskeletal pain in adults.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is a major health problem, accounting for approximately one-quarter of general practice (GP) consultations in the United Kingdom (UK). Exercise and physical activity is beneficial for the most common types of CMP, such as back and knee pain. However, poor adherence to exercise and physical activity may limit long-term effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions to improve adherence to exercise and physical activity for people with chronic musculoskeletal pain. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the trials registers of relevant Co

Chronic Pain Acceptance Moderates the Association Between Pain Intensity and Alcohol Use Severity Among Veterans With Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain and hazardous alcohol use are prevalent and commonly co-occur among US veterans. A growing literature highlights pain as a motivator of alcohol consumption, with evidence suggesting more intense pain is associated with an increased likelihood of drinking for pain management. Although chronic pain acceptance (i.e., willingness to experience chronic pain and its sequelae while maintaining engagement in valued life activities) has emerged as a protective factor in the context of opioid-related behavior, its role in shaping pain-alcohol relations has not been examined. The

Beyond Neuropathy: The Mechanisms and Phenotypes of Diabetes-Related Musculoskeletal Pain.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major global health concern associated with serious complications, high healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Musculoskeletal pain is a common complication and contributes to limitations in daily activities and increased healthcare utilization. Pain is a multidimensional phenomenon typically classified as nociceptive, neuropathic, or nociplastic; however, evidence regarding pain mechanisms and phenotypes in people with DM remains limited. This review aimed to synthesize and critically review the literature on musculoskeletal pain in individuals with DM, foc

Prevalence of dysautonomia in chronic musculoskeletal pain: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: There is substantial evidence that the autonomic nervous system plays a crucial role in pain modulation and chronicity, but the actual prevalence of dysautonomia in musculoskeletal conditions remains unknown. This study investigated the prevalence of dysautonomia in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) compared with healthy controls, quantified the dysautonomia burden in inflammatory and non-inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions, and evaluated the associations between pain severity, psychological factors and dysautonomia severity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study

Applications of Prolotherapy in Chronic Musculoskeletal Pelvic Pain: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Though the utilization of prolotherapy has been described since the 1930s, there still exists a paucity of information about its contemporary application as an alternative or complementary treatment modality for chronic musculoskeletal pelvic pain. RECENT FINDINGS: Prolotherapy may serve as a safe and efficacious nonsurgical intervention for the treatment of a multitude of chronic pelvic pain conditions, particularly in cases where conservative medical management and physical therapy have failed. In this narrative review, we discuss the current evidence suggesting that prol

Chronic pain of the musculoskeletal system - point of view for general practitioner.

Pain is subjective unpleasant feeling of varied origin and once it is chronic (lasting more than 6 month) it could be responsible for significantly decreased quality of life. Pivotal role in pain suffering plays both peripheral and central nervous system and at these levels its intensity could be decreased by several pharmacological and non-pharmacological means. Rationale of chronic management of musculoskeletal pain. This article is a review of contemporary bibliography in order to assess pathomechanism and causes of pain to successfully cope with the condition. Of utmost importance in manag

From Fear to Safety: A Roadmap to Recovery From Musculoskeletal Pain.

Contemporary conceptualizations of pain emphasize its protective function. The meaning assigned to pain drives cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses. When pain is threatening and a person lacks control over their pain experience, it can become distressing, self-perpetuating, and disabling. Although the pathway to disability is well established, the pathway to recovery is less researched and understood. This Perspective draws on recent data on the lived experience of people with pain-related fear to discuss both fear and safety-learning processes and their implications for recovery for

The Effect of Sleep Quality on Pain in Chilean Individuals with Musculoskeletal Disorders.

UNLABELLED: Poor sleep quality (SQ) negatively affects pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). As the level of economic development of a country determines its sanitary conditions, these can influence the sleep-pain relationship; therefore, it is relevant to generate evidence in the population with MSD in developing countries. This cross-sectional study sought to determine the effect of poor SQ on pain in Chilean individuals with MSD, controlling for sex and duration of pain (in months). METHOD: A total of 228 individuals were included. SQ was measured with the Pittsburg Sleep Q

Musculoskeletal Pain in Gymnasts: A Retrospective Analysis on a Cohort of Professional Athletes.

Gymnastics athletes are exposed to a high risk of injury, but also of developing musculoskeletal pain. These data are still little investigated in the available scientific literature. An online survey was distributed to 79 professional athletes who practiced artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. The survey collected demographic and anthropometric data, information about the sport practice, the training sessions, the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain gymnastics-related, and lifestyle habits. Musculoskeletal pain had a high prevalence, involving 65 of 79 athletes (82.3%). A significant correlation

Preference for opioids in emergency department patients with acute musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND: Public awareness of the opioid epidemic is increasing nationally, emphasizing the need to develop methods to reduce opioid use. We determined patient preference for analgesics before and after a brief educational intervention informing them of the risks and benefits of opioids versus non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's). We hypothesized 50% of patients would prefer opioids pre-intervention and that this would be reduced by the intervention by at least 15%. METHODS: Study Design-Before and after study.
