Associations between high perceived stress, inflammatory proteins, and BDNF: a cross-sectional study of young adult females in Shanghai, China.

Psychological stress accelerates aging, increasing morbidity and mortality risks, though the mechanisms behind this relationship are still under investigation. This cross-sectional study explored the link between perceived stress and blood protein profiles by recruiting healthy female subjects (aged 18-35) stratified into high (HS) and low (LS) perceived stress groups according to self-reported subjective questionnaires in Shanghai, China. The HS group displayed a higher tendency of neuroticism along with depression, anxiety, and emotional volatility. The exploratory proteomic analysis of bloo

Multi-genome comparisons reveal gain-and-loss evolution of anti-Mullerian hormone receptor type 2 as a candidate master sex-determining gene in Percidae.

BACKGROUND: The Percidae family comprises many fish species of major importance for aquaculture and fisheries. Based on three new chromosome-scale assemblies in Perca fluviatilis, Perca schrenkii, and Sander vitreus along with additional percid fish reference genomes, we provide an evolutionary and comparative genomic analysis of their sex-determination systems. RESULTS: We explored the fate of a duplicated anti-Mullerian hormone receptor type-2 gene (amhr2bY), previously suggested to be the master sex-determining (MSD) gene in P. flavescens. Phylogenetically related and structurally similar

Broad immunogenic spectrum of monovalent and trivalent foot-and-mouth disease virus vaccines containing O1 campos, A24 cruzeiro and A Argentina 2001 strains against circulating viral lineages in cattle and pigs.

FMD remains endemic in many Asian and African countries where multiple variants of serotypes O and A, among others, currently circulate. Due to lack of cross-protection between serotypes and incomplete protection between some strains even within a serotype, an important challenge for the application of effective vaccination programs is to select highly immunogenic and widely cross-reactive vaccine strains. Adaptation of a candidate field virus for use as a vaccine can be quite complex, so that whenever possible, the use of well-established vaccine viruses could have enormous advantages. FMD va

Functional autoantibody diseases: Basics and treatment related to cardiomyopathies.

The neurodegenerative decline of brain with ageing is an acute global demographic problem, as elderly population surges worldwide. However, ageing effect has not been systematically studied for cerebellum, an autonomous part of brain having motor, cognition, language and memory functions. By magnetic resonance investigation, we study brain-ageing process: 177 normal subjects, aged 20-80, with focus on cerebellum, the first larger-scale analysis as we know. We found that for whole brain, both grey-matter/GM and white-matter/WM) volumes deceases with ageing (by ~ 15%). Contrastingly, these volum

Virulence-Related Genes Expression in Planktonic Mixed Cultures of Candida albicans and Non-Albicans Candida Species.

INTRODUCTION: Candida albicans is the most common opportunistic pathogen causing fungal infections worldwide, especially in high-risk patients. Its pathogenicity is related to virulence factors gene expression, such as hyphal growth (HWP1), cell adhesion (ALS3), and protease secretion (SAP1) during infection spreading mechanisms. In recent years, an increase in non-albicans Candida infections has been reported, which may present coinfection or competitive interactions with C. albicans, potentially aggravating the patient's condition. This study aims to evaluate the expression of genes related

Phyllotaxis, ontogeny and CT imaging: old and new approaches to understanding optimal seed packing in Middle Jurassic Araucaria mirabilis cones.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fibonacci spiral phyllotaxis is overwhelmingly the most common leaf arrangement among plants, both today and in the fossil record. Spiral phyllotaxis appeared as early as the Late Devonian, some 380 Mya. This mathematical property has been studied rigorously in living conifer species; however, the phyllotaxis of fossil conifer seed cones remains under-studied, including that of the Middle Jurassic seed cones of Araucaria mirabilis. METHODS: Twenty-one A. mirabilis seed cones from the Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo National Park, Argentina, were analysed for their morph

Phylogeny and divergence time estimation of the subfamily Amphipsyllinae based on the Frontopsylla diqingensis mitogenome.

Fleas are primarily parasites of small mammals and serve as essential vectors of the transmission of plague. The subfamily Amphipsyllinae (Siphonaptera: Leptopsyllidae) consists of 182 species across 13 genera, widely distributed worldwide. Only two species of Amphipsyllinae have been sequenced for complete mitogenomes to date. It hinders the taxonomy and evolutionary history studies of fleas. In this study, we first sequenced the Frontopsylla diqingensis mitogenome and performed comparative mitogenomic analyses with the two other species (Frontopsylla spadix and Paradoxopsyllus custodis) in A

New fossils, systematics, and biogeography of the oldest known crown primate Teilhardina from the earliest Eocene of Asia, Europe, and North America.

Omomyiform primates are among the most basal fossil haplorhines, with the oldest classified in the genus Teilhardina and known contemporaneously from Asia, Europe, and North America during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) ∼56 mya. Characterization of morphology in this genus has been limited by small sample sizes and fragmentary fossils. A new dental sample (n = 163) of the North American species Teilhardina brandti from PETM strata of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, documents previously unknown morphology and variation, prompting the need for a systematic revision of the genus. The P4

Epithelial cadherin disassociates from the lateral plasma membrane of uterine epithelial cells throughout pregnancy in a marsupial.

The uterine luminal epithelium is the first site of contact between fetal and maternal tissues during therian pregnancy and must undergo specialised changes for implantation of the blastocyst to be successful. These changes, collectively termed the plasma membrane transformation (PMT), allow the blastocyst to attach to the uterine epithelium preceding the formation of a placenta. There are similarities in the morphological and molecular changes occurring in live-bearing eutherian species during the PMT studied so far. Similar cellular remodelling occurs in a marsupial species, the fat-tailed d

Comparative phylogeography of African fruit bats (Chiroptera, Pteropodidae) provide new insights into the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa, 2014-2016.

Both Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus were detected in several fruit bat species of the family Pteropodidae, suggesting that this taxon plays a key role in the life cycle of filoviruses. After four decades of Zaire Ebolavirus (ZEBOV) outbreaks in Central Africa, the virus was detected for the first time in West Africa in 2014. To better understand the role of fruit bats as potential reservoirs and circulating hosts between Central and West Africa, we examine here the phylogeny and comparative phylogeography of Pteropodidae. Our phylogenetic results confirm the existence of four independent lineages

New insights into the evolution of Wolbachia infections in filarial nematodes inferred from a large range of screened species.

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia are intriguing symbiotic endobacteria with a peculiar host range that includes arthropods and a single nematode family, the Onchocercidae encompassing agents of filariases. This raises the question of the origin of infection in filariae. Wolbachia infect the female germline and the hypodermis. Some evidences lead to the theory that Wolbachia act as mutualist and coevolved with filariae from one infection event: their removal sterilizes female filariae; all the specimens of a positive species are infected; Wolbachia are vertically inherited; a few species lost the symbiont

Anatolia's Hidden Orthopteran Lineage: Discovery of Salmanihippus gen. nov. via Integrative Taxonomy.

Three populations of a new genus and populations of five Anatolian species of Gomphocerus are examined morphologically using morphometric analysis (Canonical Discriminant Function Analysis, CDF). The phylogenetic relationship between the new genus and the morphologically similar genera of Gomphocerus, Gomphocerippus, and Aeropedellus are assessed using the mitochondrial COI and Cyt-b gene sequences. Additionally, the bioacoustics of the three populations of the new genus are compared with previous bioacoustic descriptions of the related Gomphocerinae genera. The morphometric data based on the

Ecological and geographical speciation in Lucilia bufonivora: The evolution of amphibian obligate parasitism.

Lucilia (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a genus of blowflies comprised largely of saprophagous and facultative parasites of livestock. Lucilia bufonivora, however, exhibits a unique form of obligate parasitism of amphibians, typically affecting wild hosts. The evolutionary route by which amphibian myiasis arose, however, is not well understood due to the low phylogenetic resolution in existing nuclear DNA phylogenies. Furthermore, the timing of when specificity for amphibian hosts arose in L. bufonivora is also unknown. In addition, this species was recently reported for the first time in North Am

Chitinase family GH18: evolutionary insights from the genomic history of a diverse protein family.

BACKGROUND: Chitinases (EC.3.2.1.14) hydrolyze the beta-1,4-linkages in chitin, an abundant N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosamine polysaccharide that is a structural component of protective biological matrices such as insect exoskeletons and fungal cell walls. The glycoside hydrolase 18 (GH18) family of chitinases is an ancient gene family widely expressed in archea, prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Mammals are not known to synthesize chitin or metabolize it as a nutrient, yet the human genome encodes eight GH18 family members. Some GH18 proteins lack an essential catalytic glutamic acid and are likely to ac

Replacing saturated fat with PUFA-rich (sunflower oil) or MUFA-rich (rapeseed, olive and high-oleic sunflower oil) fats resulted in comparable hypocholesterolemic effects in cholesterol-fed hamsters.

While the terrestrial fossil record of the mid-Cretaceous interval (Aptian to Cenomanian) in North America has been poorly studied, the recent focus on fossil localities from the western United States has offered a more detailed picture of vertebrate diversity, ecosystem dynamics and faunal turnover that took place on the western landmass of Laramidia. This is in stark contrast to the terrestrial record from the eastern landmass of Appalachia, where vertebrate fossils are rare and consist mostly of isolated and fragmentary remains. However, a detailed understanding of these fossil communities

Evolution of antigenic diversity in the zoonotic multi-host parasite Schistosoma japonicum: implications for vaccine design.

The multi-host zoonotic transmission of the blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum is complex, presenting challenges for China's schistosomiasis elimination strategy. How multi-host transmission impacts the genetic diversity of S. japonicum populations is poorly understood and the extent of Schistosoma japonicum antigen coding gene (SjACG) variability remains unknown despite the implications for parasite survival, vaccine development and disease control. To address this, we sequenced the host-interacting domains of three functionally significant SjACGs previously identified as promising vaccine tar

Phylogeographic Analysis of Blastomyces dermatitidis and Blastomyces gilchristii Reveals an Association with North American Freshwater Drainage Basins.

Blastomyces dermatitidis and Blastomyces gilchristii are dimorphic fungal pathogens that cause serious pulmonary and systemic infections in humans. Although their natural habitat is in the environment, little is known about their specific ecologic niche(s). Here, we analyzed 25 microsatellite loci from 169 strains collected from various regions throughout their known endemic range in North America, representing the largest and most geographically diverse collection of isolates studied to date. Genetic analysis of multilocus microsatellite data divided the strains into four populations of B. de

Tracing the Origins of Human Disease: A Phylogenomic Toolkit for Identifying Evolutionary Trade-Offs.

Evolutionary trade-offs, in which adaptations that confer fitness advantages simultaneously create disease vulnerabilities, are widely recognized across human biology. Such trade-offs have traditionally been identified through forward reasoning: investigators with deep knowledge of a particular disease recognize that an associated gene or pathway also serves an adaptive function and propose a trade-off hypothesis on this basis. While productive, this approach is opportunistic and disease-specific. No systematic method exists for working in reverse: starting from a disease and tracing its genet

Cryptic serpentine divergence and substrate adaptation of Cardamine glauca in the Balkan Peninsula.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Serpentine soils represent one of the most challenging substrates for plant life due to skewed ratios of essential nutrients and toxic concentrations of metals. Plant adaptation to such conditions may lead to locally adapted edaphic ecotypes or, when reproductive barriers evolve, to distinct serpentine endemics. However, a third scenario may occur: cryptic edaphic divergence, where phenotypically similar lineages adapted to contrasting substrates exhibit deep genetic divergence. Here, we tested whether substrate-associated divergence reflects repeated serpentine adaptation

Chromosome-level genome of Mosla chinensis from alpine ecotype provides insights into terpenoid biosynthesis and germplasm exploration.

Mosla chinensis is a high-value medicinal plant with scarce genomic resources for precision breeding. Here, we present the first chromosome-scale genome of an alpine ecotype (Baiyunjian Reserve, 1,611 m above sea level) assembled via SMRT sequencing and Hi-C technologies. 93.46% of sequences were anchored to 9 pseudochromosomes with 99.99% accuracy, resulting in the assembly of the 444.26 Mb genome (contig N50 = 41.38 Mb; 98.7% BUSCO). High proportion of repetitive sequences (56.90%) and species-specific genome duplication revealed the species-specific adaptations of this ecotype. Multi-tissue
