Genetic diversity of vector-borne pathogens in spotted and brown hyenas from Namibia and Tanzania relates to ecological conditions rather than host taxonomy.

BACKGROUND: Improved knowledge on vector-borne pathogens in wildlife will help determine their effect on host species at the population and individual level and whether these are affected by anthropogenic factors such as global climate change and landscape changes. Here, samples from brown hyenas (Parahyaena brunnea) from Namibia (BHNA) and spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) from Namibia (SHNA) and Tanzania (SHTZ) were screened for vector-borne pathogens to assess the frequency and genetic diversity of pathogens and the effect of ecological conditions and host taxonomy on this diversity. Molecular detection and characterization of malignant catarrhal fever viruses in Namibia: insights into OvHV-2 and AlHV-1 presence at the wildlife-livestock interface.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a severe lymphoproliferative disease of domestic and wild ruminants caused by macaviruses, mainly ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) and alcelaphine gammaherpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1). Although relevant in sub-Saharan Africa, molecular epidemiological data remain limited, particularly in Namibia. This study investigated the occurrence and diversity of MCF viruses in Namibian livestock and contextualised local strains globally.Fifteen samples from cattle and sheep suspected of MCF were collected across five Namibian regions in 2023. Viral DNA was screened by duplex ne

A web-based survey of horse owners' perceptions and network analysis of horse movements relating to African horse sickness distribution in Namibia and South Africa.

Africa horse sickness (AHS) is the most lethal infectious non-contagious horse disease and has accordingly been declared notifiable by the World Organisation for Animal Health. AHS is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and causes considerable losses to the equestrian industry. The effect of diseases in livestock on socio-economic factors is well researched, but the effect of anthropogenic factors on the distribution of a disease is poorly understood. The purpose of the study was to assess Namibian and South African horse owners' perceptions and the effect of horse movement on AHS distribution. A cr

Lepocreadioidea (Digenea: Trematoda) of southern Africa, including a new genus and species of Lepidapedidae infecting the galjoen, Dichistius capensis (Cuvier) (Centrarchiformes: Dichistiidae) from off Namibia.

Investigations into the digenean trematode fauna of southern African marine fishes revealed representatives of three families of the superfamily Lepocreadioidea Odhner, 1905. A new taxon, requiring the proposal of a new genus, Cutmoreia galjoen n. gen. et n. sp., is described from the intestine of the galjoen, Dichistius capensis (Cuvier) (Dichistiidae), collected from off the shore between Langstrand and Swakopmund, Namibia. A combination of morphology and molecular sequence data place this taxon in the Lepidapedidae Yamaguti, 1958, representing the first member of this family to be recorded
