Localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis: A case report.

Amyloidosis is a rare condition on its own but finding localized amyloidosis of a site such as the nasopharynx is an extremely rare condition with very few cases described in the literature. The condition occurs due to the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the extracellular space disrupting the cell architecture and causing eventual dysfunction. In this case report we discuss the pathophysiology, symptoms, and imaging findings of a patient initially thought to have giant cell arteritis, but who was found on CT to have a mass later determined to be localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis. [New developments in the management of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a rare condition, with less than 300 cases occurring per year in France. Its treatment can be difficult due to the importance of side effects, but tumor control is usually excellent following a well conducted chemoradiotherapy. This article summarizes the recent advances in nasopharyngeal cancer diagnosis, classification, treatment, surveillance and management of recurrences. Chemotherapy timing is discussed, along with arguments in favor of induction chemotherapy in locally advanced cases. As a survival advantage has been suggested for when patients are treated in

Primary extracranial nasopharyngeal meningioma in a dog.

An 8-year-old Labrador Retriever was presented for inspiratory efforts with stertor. A rhinoscopy and a magnetic resonance imaging scan were performed and revealed a naso-pharyngeal mass. The mass was identified in the nasopharynx without meningeal extension. This mass was both T1- and T2-hyperintense, compared to normal brain parenchyma without significant postcontrast enhancement. The mass was surgically removed and the histologic diagnosis was a mesenchymal tumor. Immunohistochemistry with antibodies was conducted and consistent with an extracranial meningioma. To the authors' knowledge, th

Nasopharyngeal radium irradiation: The lessons of history.

In the Netherlands, nasopharyngeal radium irradiation was started in 1945. The indications included refractory symptoms of otitis media with effusion and other adenoid-related disorders after adenoidectomy. It was considered a safe and effective therapy. Its use decreased sharply in 1958, following a worldwide media avalanche around the dramatic events in the treatment of a 5-year-old child in Utrecht, enhancing the widespread fear of radioactivity. This case history illustrates the powerful role of the media in medical decision-making.

Primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is rare even in areas where tuberculosis is endemic. Here, we report a case of rare primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis, promptly evaluated by nasolaryngoscopy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old woman presented with postnasal drip and a cough of 1-month duration. Endoscopic examination of the nasopharynx revealed irregular mucosal thickening of the right lateral and posterior wall of the naso (epi)-pharynx, which was covered with yellow discharge presenting as postnasal drip. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated enhanced soft tissue ar

[Conformal radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal cancer patients].

The paper is aimed at the determination of the efficiency of various technologies of conformal radiotherapy for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The study included 56 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx treated with conformal radiotherapy. 3D-CRT was performed for 28 patients, IMRT--22 patients, RapidArc--6 patients. Dosimetric parameters were determined for planned volumes and organs at risk. TD on high-risk areas was 70Gy, intermediate-risk zones 60-66Gy and low-risk areas 50-56 Gy. There were determined session duration of exposure and the number of monitor units

Synchronous parotid and nasopharyngeal Warthin tumor.

BACKGROUND: Warthin tumor is the second most common benign salivary gland neoplasm after pleomorphic adenoma. Warthin tumors occur almost exclusively in the parotid gland and periparotid lymph nodes, extraparotid localization is rare. METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a case of a patient presenting with a synchronous unilateral parotid gland and nasopharyngeal Warthin tumor. CONCLUSION: We propose that, although this occurrence of a synchronous parotid gland and nasopharyngeal Warthin tumor may be coincidental, it is more likely to be an effect of a systemic factor.

Surgical salvage of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a unique tumour which is endemic in southern China including Hong Kong. Whilst the treatment results for the primary cancer has been encouraging, management of recurrent tumours has been challenging. Compared to other surgical approaches, the maxillary swing operation provides wide access to the bilateral nasopharynx and the ipsilateral parapharyngeal space, allowing resection of tumours with adequate margins. Among the 312 patients who had received salvage nasopharyngectomy via the maxillary swing approach, the chance of achieving microscopically clear resection ma

Incidental pheochromocytoma in a patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Because the adrenal glands are common locations for metastases, pheochromocytoma is frequently misdiagnosed as adrenal metastasis in patients with a history of cancer. An incidental adrenal mass was detected during an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan performed to stage the nasopharyngeal carcinoma in a 35-year-old male patient. The features of an adrenal mass on the CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) were thought to show adrenal metastasis. However, the patient did not complain about

[Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma with orbital extension].

CLINICAL CASE: The case is presented of a 21 year-old male with a history of left proptosis and diplopia of two weeks of onset. The MRI showed an ethmoid-orbital vascular lesion with anterior skull base invasion and orbital extension. Biopsy of the ethmoid confirmed fibrovascular tissue, which supported the diagnosis of angiofibroma. DISCUSSION: It is a benign neoplasm with local characteristics of malignancy due to its ability to invade adjacent areas. In this case, the debut presented with manifestations of orbital extension. A broad and multidisciplinary approach is needed in order to impr

Nasopharyngeal rhabdomyosarcoma mimicking a peritonsillar abscess.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue malignancy seen in childhood and frequently occurs in the head and neck region. Pediatric head and neck RMS is often misdiagnosed as common benign conditions. Here we describe an embryonal RMS that presented as a peritonsillar abscess (PTA). Due to an incorrect initial diagnosis and lack of imaging, the patient received unnecessary medical therapy and diagnosis of RMS was delayed.

[A case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma accompanying erythroderma].

We describe a 58-years-old man with a primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma accompanying erythroderma. His first symptoms were systemic scattered erythema and itching for six months. Lower right cervical lymphadenectasis was found by physical examination. A neoplasm in nasopharynx could be seen with nasal endoscope. The pathology of the neoplasm was non-keratinizing carcinoma. This case illustrates that "erythroderma" could be a paraneoplastic effect of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

A rare case of nasopharyngeal pleomorphic adenoma.

Salivary gland tumors are rare. The majority of these tumors are benign and about 70% are pleomorphic adenomas (PA). Nasopharynx is an unusual site for the PA tumor. Only six cases are presented in the literature from 1990 to 2011. The diagnosis of this disease is linked to the sum of imaging tests, clinical and histological study of the mass of the above. The radiologic features of noninvasion of surrounding structures give the first clue to the benign lesion. From the review of the literature and our experience is identified as the gold standard in surgical treatment for this condition. Than
