Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae can cycle between environmental plastic waste and floodwater: Implications for environmental management of cholera.

Globally, there has been a significant rise in cholera cases and deaths, with an increase in the number of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) reporting outbreaks. In parallel, plastic pollution in LMICs is increasing, and has become a major constituent of urban dump sites. The surfaces of environmental plastic pollution can provide a habitat for complex microbial biofilm communities; this so-called 'plastisphere' can also include human pathogens. Under conditions simulating a peri-urban environmental waste pile, we determine whether toxigenic Vibrio cholerae (O1 classical; O1 El Tor; O13

Intrinsic sustainability assessment at technosphere level by adapting entropy based ecologic indicators. A preliminary analysis for some main waste treatment processes.

The present study was developed on the following evidence: "what is considered to be environmentally sustainable in the technosphere has to be in compliance with the development tendency of the ecosphere". Starting from this hypothesis, two entropy-based indicators were proposed: the specific entropy per amount of exergy gained (SEEG); the specific entropy per amount of exergy exploitable in the technosphere (SEEE). These were retrieved from the specific entropy (SE) indicator largely exploited for assessing the health status and the development tendency of ecosystems. Entropy based indicators

The Program for Biodiversity Research in Brazil: The role of regional networks for biodiversity knowledge, dissemination, and conservation.

The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through ti

Environmental management accounting and innovation in water and energy reduction.

The objective of the study is to analyse the role of environmental management accounting (EMA) and the innovation of products and processes in reducing energy and water consumption. To carry out the study, data from PINTEC2017 on innovation activities from 55 sectors in Brazil from 2015 to 2017 were analysed. The hypotheses were tested with the application of structural equation modelling using SmartPLS. The results show that environmental management accounting (EMA) affects product innovation directly and process innovation indirectly through environmental management techniques. These results

Effects of SCUBA bubbles on counts of roving piscivores in a large remote marine protected area.

This study examined the effects of SCUBA bubbles on fish counts in underwater visual surveys conducted in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM). Specifically, paired fish surveys were conducted at each survey site, utilizing two different gear types: open-circuit SCUBA (OC) and closed-circuit rebreather (CCR). Bubble exhaust released from the OC equipment is a potential source of bias for in-situ fish observations, as the associated audio and visual disturbances could either attract or repel fishes depending on whether their behavior is more driven by curiosity or caution. The

Does clinical ethics need a Land Ethic?

A clinical ethics fit for the Anthropocene-our current geological era in which human activity is the primary determinant of environmental change-needs to incorporate environmental ethics to be fit for clinical practice. Conservationist Aldo Leopold's essay 'The Land Ethic' is probably the most widely-cited source in environmental philosophy; but Leopold's work, and environmental ethics generally, has made little impression on clinical ethics. The Land Ethic holds that "A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it t

Towards a comprehensive wildfire management strategy for Mediterranean areas: Framework development and implementation in Catalonia, Spain.

Southern European countries rely largely on fire suppression and ignition prevention to manage a growing wildfire problem. We explored a more wholistic, long-term approach based on priority maps for the implementation of diverse management options aimed at creating fire resilient landscapes, restoring cultural fire regimes, facilitating safe and efficient fire response, and creating fire-adapted communities. To illustrate this new comprehensive strategy for fire-prone Mediterranean areas, we developed and implemented the framework in Catalonia (northeastern Spain). We first used advanced simul

Artificial structures alter kelp functioning across an urbanised estuary.

Assessments of human impacts on natural habitats often focus on the abundance of component species, yet physiological and/or sub-lethal effects of stressors on functional attributes may be equally important to consider. Here we evaluated how artificial structures, an integral part of urbanisation in the marine environment, affects key functional properties of the habitat-forming kelp Ecklonia radiata. Given that stressors rarely occur in isolation, we assessed the effects of infrastructure across an urbanised estuary. Estuaries are ideal for studying how multiple anthropogenic and natural stre

Marine protected areas and spatial fetishism: A viewpoint on destructive fishing in coastal Tanzania.

This paper focuses on destructive fishing practices in coastal Tanzania. I argue that the dominant conservation narrative that increased capacity and 'political will' for enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs) reflects a form of spatial fetishization, in that it overemphasizes the influence of space over social behaviour. I contend that Tanzanian MPAs offer bandage solutions to underlying structural problems that are contingent upon the inconsistent availability of social and financial resources for monitoring activities. I suggest that a paradigm shift is necessary, involving the de-ter

Veterinary Aspects of Bird of Prey Reproduction.

Captive breeding has contributed to successful restoration of many species of birds of prey. Avicultural techniques pioneered by raptor breeders include double clutching, direct fostering, cross-fostering, hatch and switch, hacking, imprinting male and female falcons for semen collection, and artificial insemination techniques. However, reproductive failure occurs related to management problems, including hygiene measures, food quality issues, breeding flock structure, or individual health issues of breeding birds. These may result in non-egg laying females, low-quality eggs, or infertile eggs

Geoengineering: could we or should we make it work?

Schemes to modify large-scale environment systems or control climate have been proposed for over 50 years to (i) increase temperatures in high latitudes, (ii) increase precipitation, (iii) decrease sea ice, (iv) create irrigation opportunities, or (v) offset potential global warming by injecting iron in the oceans or sea-salt aerosol in the marine boundary layer or spreading dust in the stratosphere to reflect away an amount of solar energy equivalent to the amount of heat trapped by increased greenhouse gases from human activities. These and other proposed geoengineering schemes are briefly r

Implementing artificial insemination as an effective tool for ex situ conservation of endangered avian species.

Approximately 503 of the known species of birds are classified as 'endangered' or 'critical'. Captive propagation programs have proven useful in maintaining genetic diversity and restoring wild populations of certain species, including the Peregrine falcon, California condor and Whooping crane. Artificial insemination (AI) has the potential of solving problems inherent to reproductive management of small, closed populations of endangered birds, including dealing with demographic instability, physical and behavioral disabilities, sexual incompatibility, lack of synchrony, and need to maintain g

[Application of near-infrared spectroscopy to management of vegetation for natural grassland].

Vegetation is a major index for monitoring the grassland condition and productivity. The change in vegetation directly reflects degradation and restoration of grassland ecosystem. It is important to monitoring the information of vegetation changes to prevent degradation and realize sustainable development of grassland. Predication of vegetation was often completed by field investigation and laboratory analysis in the past, and could not satisfy the needs for inspecting of grassland degradation and restoration. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid, convenient, high-efficiency, non-destr

Structural Shift of Global Consumption-Based Biodiversity Threats from Land to Climate.

Current global biodiversity conservation targets focus predominantly on terrestrial habitat protection and reducing deforestation. However, these targets may overlook the climate-biodiversity nexus and the structural shift of global biodiversity threats. This study constructs a multistressor biodiversity footprint (BF) assessment framework to quantify the biodiversity impacts driven by land use, carbon emissions, and water consumption. Using the EXIOBASE 3.9.6 database and the LC-IMPACT model, we traced temporal changes in consumption-based BFs across 49 economies for 2000, 2010, 2020, and 202

High-intensity fire and long-term destocking causes top kill but fails to reverse encroachment and restore biodiversity.

Woody encroachment is a pervasive threat in grasslands worldwide. Encroachment has proven resilient to many nature-based interventions, including frequent burning and destocking grazers. A potential solution is high-intensity fires-or "extreme" fires-which combine high fuel loads with burning under dry windy conditions. Large-scale tests of high-intensity fire are limited and have had mixed results. We compared two catchments of tallgrass prairie heavily encroached by resprouting shrubs, with similar land-use histories, including long-term grazer destocking. In 2021, one catchment burned under

Evaluation of stand structural complexity at different developmental stages in Larix gmelinii secondary forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains, China.

Based on data from 79 plots of Larix gmelinii secondary forests in the Greater Khingan Mountains, we classified the developmental stages of the stands by using affinity propagation clustering algorithm with thirteen eva-luation indicators from three aspects including tree species diversity, non-spatial structure, and spatial structure characteristics. We then compared the consistency of the full indicator set (13 indicators) and the minimum indicator set (five indicators) in evaluating stand structural complexity across different developmental stages by radar chart analysis. The main aim was t
