Radiation-induced undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the breast.

Breast sarcoma is a rare form of malignancy that arises from connective tissue within the breast, comprising less than 5% of all sarcomas. They develop as primary tumours or as secondary following radiation therapy. Diagnosis can be challenging as breast sarcomas are often asymptomatic and resemble benign breast tissue changes. Radiation-induced breast sarcomas present in various forms with an average latency period of 10-20 years following initial radiation therapy. Angiosarcomas are the most common form, while other types such as undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas remain rare. Here, we re

Primary undifferentiated sarcoma of the meninges: A case report and comprehensive review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Sarcomas make up 1% of all cases of adult cancer, with 5-10% of those classified as undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas (UPS/PUS) and 0.1-4.3% primary intracranial sarcomas. Intracranial undifferentiated sarcoma is characterized by an earlier age of onset and generally poorer prognosis compared to extracranial undifferentiated sarcomas. Current therapies involve surgical excision with wide margins and radiotherapy, with minimal data available regarding the efficacy of chemotherapy. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 79-year-old man with a history of remote superficial bladder ca

MANAGEMENT OF ENDOCRINE DISEASE: Recurrence or new tumors after complete resection of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the incidence and factors associated with recurrences or new tumors after apparent complete resection of pheochromocytoma or thoraco-abdomino-pelvic paraganglioma. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature was performed. METHODS: Pubmed and Embase from 1980 to 2012 were searched for studies published in English on patients with non-metastatic pheochromocytoma or thoraco-abdomino-pelvic paraganglioma, complete tumor resection, postoperative follow-up exceeding 1 month, and recurrence or new tumor documented by pathology, hormona

Risk factors for subsequent endocrine-related cancer in childhood cancer survivors.

Long-term adverse health conditions, including secondary malignant neoplasms, are common in childhood cancer survivors. Although mortality attributable to secondary malignancies declined over the past decades, the risk for developing a solid secondary malignant neoplasm did not. Endocrine-related malignancies are among the most common secondary malignant neoplasms observed in childhood cancer survivors. In this systematic review, we describe risk factors for secondary malignant neoplasms of the breast and thyroid, since these are the most common secondary endocrine-related malignancies in chil

A review of secondary central nervous system tumors after treatment of a primary pediatric malignancy.

Despite remarkable strides in the treatment of pediatric malignancies over the last 50 years, long-lasting sequelae and secondary malignancies continue to plague this population. This article reviews the incidence, diagnosis, and etiology of secondary central nervous system tumors in the setting of a history of primary pediatric malignancy. Particular attention is paid to central nervous system tumors presenting after treatment of leukemia and primary brain tumors, as well as the role of treatment and underlying cancer predisposition syndromes in the risk of developing these secondary tumors.

Two cases of metachronic tumours: cancers of the ovary and endometrium in young women. Case presentation and review.

Ovarian and endometrial cancers seldom develop in females under 40 years of age. Manifestation of metachronic cancers before the age of 40 is of casuistic interest. Two cases are presented in whom metachronic cancers were detected: the first localisation involved the ovary, and the second the endometrium. One of the patients had earlier delivered a baby with multiple hereditary defects and was diagnosed with secondary infertility. The second patient was diagnosed with primary infertility. Immunohistochemical tests disclosed the presence of alpha and beta type estrogen receptors and progesteron

[Desmoplastic recurrence of a melanoma of the female urethra].

We report a case of melanoma of the female urethra, recurring on the vulva as a desmoplastic invasive melanoma. The urethral tumor was an unclassifiable melanoma with an invasive epithelioid, and an intraepidermal atypical melanocytic component. The desmoplastic recidive was made of intersecting fascicles of spindled, moderately atypical cells, scattered over a dense collagenous matrix. Tumor cells were immunoreactive for S100 protein and vimentin, negative for HMB45. The morphological and immunophenotypic differences with the initial tumor, the absence of melanocytic dysplasia within the over

Second malignant neoplasms in children after treatment of soft tissue sarcoma.

Currently, approximately 67% of children diagnosed with cancer can be expected to survive more than 5 years. Among the most significant late effects of cancer therapy is the development of second malignant neoplasm (SMN). This study was performed to identify the factors associated with the development of second malignant neoplasms after treatment for soft tissue sarcomas in childhood. Retrospectively the charts of 20 children who developed second malignant neoplasms after treatment for primary childhood soft tissue sarcoma were reviewed. Presentation, age at diagnosis, tumor histology, extent

Unusual synchronous and metachronous association of hematologic neoplasms with gynecologic neoplasms: A case series and literature review.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of synchronous or metachronous hematologic and gynecologic malignancies. The medical database of the pathology department at a tertiary center was searched from 2016 to 2024 for cases involving both hematologic and gynecologic tumors. A literature search using Google Scholar and PubMed was also conducted between May and June 2024. Articles reporting surgical pathology data were included, while radiologic studies and those lacking pathology data were excluded. Cases involving one gynecologic cancer and one hematologic malignancy were a

Endometrioid adenocarcinoma in an extrauterine adenomyoma.

BACKGROUND: Focal involvement by endometrioid adenocarcinoma in an extrauterine adenomyoma in a patient with stage 1 endometrioid adenocarcinoma presented a unique problem in staging and management of extrauterine endometrial cancer. CASE: A 49-year-old white woman, gravida 0, referred for endometrioid adenocarcinoma was found to have an extrauterine adenomyoma involved with endometrioid adenocarcinoma in the inguinal canal after surgical staging. The endometrioid adenocarcinoma involving the extrauterine adenomyoma was low-grade and noninvasive, representing an embryological anomaly transfor

Unilateral absence of the left pulmonary artery accompanied by right lung cancer.

Unilateral absence of a pulmonary artery is a rare congenital anomaly that is often accompanied by other cardiovascular anomalies. Surgical treatment for this rare disease is usually performed only on the abnormal side. We report on a case of unilateral absence of a pulmonary artery that was complicated by contralateral primary lung cancer. We performed a right middle lobectomy despite the absence of the left pulmonary artery and detected changes in respiratory function during the operation. The present case provides information on the surgical tolerability and predictable morbidity following

Case 242: Radiation-induced Angiosarcoma.

History In 2004, this woman received a diagnosis of invasive mammillary carcinoma, tubular variant, strongly positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors. Her lesion was found at screening mammography performed at an outside institution when she was 59 years old. She underwent partial mastectomy, with partial axillary node dissection and sentinel node mapping. A 0.6 × 0.5 cm Nottingham grade 1 infiltrating ductal carcinoma was removed from the right upper outer quadrant, margins were free of tumor, and there was no angiolymphatic invasion. The six dissected lymph nodes were negative for ma

[Specifics of regional metastases of adrenal malignant tumors].

Radicality of surgical treatment of the adrenal gland malignant tumor (AGMT) depends on its primary complete excision as well as all the regional metastases (RM). This trusts the necessity of studying of the regional metastatic spreading ways. There were investigated the regional metastatic spreading ways in 257 patients with AGMT, treated in 1968-2002 yrs in the clinic. In 33% of the patients with AGMT RM were revealed. Regional metastatic spreading was as usual lymphogenic one. RM were usually revealed in lymphatic nodes of renal hilus, paranephral and paraaortal fat tissue. That's why while

Secondary chemoprevention of upper aerodigestive tract tumors.

Patients with successfully treated upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) tumors commonly develop second primary tumors (SPTs). These tumors occur more often than chance would predict, arise in both the upper or lower aerodigestive tracts, are frequently preceded by leukoplakia, and are a major cause of treatment-related failure. Measures to control SPTs include primary prevention with tobacco and alcohol abstinence, surveillance endoscopy, and secondary chemoprevention. Chemoprevention is the administration of natural or synthetic substances to suppress or reverse the malignant process. Secondary c
