[Epidermal nevus syndrome - a case report].

OBJECTIVES: To present the case of a patient with an epidermal nevus since birth and its relationship to neurologic signs and symptoms, emphasizing the importance of cutaneous manifestations as early markers of syndromes involving the Central Nervous System. METHODS: Clinical, radiological and histopathological data were analyzed. RESULTS: We report the case of a boy with an erythematous lesion on the neck and cheek since birth. At 9 months the lesion was velvety and slightly brown in color, with associated hemihypertrophy of the face. After 3 months he was hospitalized for having seizures. Co

Ossifying Fibroma in a Patient With Oculocerebrocutaneous (Delleman) Syndrome.

Delleman syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by congenital anomalies affecting the eye, skin, and central nervous system. This disorder was first raised as a distinct syndromic entity by Delleman and Oorthuys in 1981 under the term "oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome" (OCCS). Since then, fewer than 40 cases have been reported. All cases have been sporadic, and no patient with an abnormal karyotype has been reported. Although the etiology is still unknown, several theories have been advanced. Most of the tissues affected by OCCS are neural crest derivatives, with a striking hom

A 6-Month-Old Girl with Incontinentia Pigmenti Presenting as Status Epilepticus.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an uncommon neurocutaneous syndrome. Its initial diagnosis is based primarily on characteristic papulovesicular skin lesions and early-onset neonatal seizures. In contrast to typical early neurologic manifestations, we encountered a normally developed 6-month-old female patient with hyperpigmented whorls on her body. Following respiratory syncytial virus infection and fever, the patient exhibited status epilepticus. Brain magnetic resonance imaging studies of the patient were compatible with the findings of acute encephalopathy in IP. Genetic analysis showed an 1

[A case of neurocutaneous melanosis associated with focal cortical dysplasia].

A newborn baby boy presented with giant melanocytic nevi on the face, trunk and extremities, and focal cortical dysplasia on MRI. At 3 months of age, he developed intractable epilepsy, and MRI at 2 years of age revealed a high-intensity area in the bilateral cerebellum on T1-weighted images, indicative of melanosis. Based on the findings of the skin and MRI, we diagnosed the boy with neurocutaneous melanosis. Cytodiagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid showed no malignancies. EEG, magnetoencephalogram and ECD-SPECT indicated that the clonic seizures originated from a focus in the right focal cortical

[MRI and CT in the diagnosis of epilepsy].

MRI and CT are important for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. Diffusion-weighted images are particularly useful for detecting early changes in the brain. In this article, I reviewed radiological findings associated with seizures (reduced diffusion and swelling of hippocampus and cortex, and a reversible splenial lesion), and lesions causing epilepsy and seizures, such as congenital abnormality of the brain (holoprosencephaly, hemimegalencephaly, lissencephaly, heterotopia, polymicrogyria, schizencephaly, and focal cortical dysplasia), neurocutaneous syndromes (tuberous sclerosis and St

Segmental neurofibromatosis in association with nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn.

We describe an unusual case involving the simultaneous occurrence of segmental neurofibromatosis (Type V NF) in a patient with a large nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn in the same physical distribution. Causative mechanisms of development of these 2 genetic disorders have not been definitively linked. Factors producing these diseases probably involve similar tissues at the same point in development because both have been reported in association with central nervous system anomalies and have been classified among the neurocutaneous syndromes. This is a case of a nevus sebaceus occurring in associati

Clinico-neuropathological study of incontinentia pigmenti achromians--an autopsy case.

A clinico-neuropathological study of a Japanese girl with hypomelanosis of Ito, one of the neurocutaneous syndromes, is reported. At birth, typical skin hypopigmentation on the trunk and a hypopigmented streak on the left lower extremity were noted. From 2 months of age, intractable convulsions occurred and EEG showed various abnormalities. Psychomotor development was severely retarded and she died of pneumonia at the age of 13 months. Neuropathological examination revealed brachycephaly, micropolygyria and asymmetry of lateral ventricles. A histological examination showed a disarray of cortic

Clinical and genetic heterogeneity in Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome.

Melkersson Rosenthal syndromes (MRS) is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited neurocutaneous syndrome characterised by a triad of facial (seventh cranial) nerve palsy, recurrent orofacial swelling and fissuring of the tongue. A recent report implicated a heterozygous missense variant in SLC27A1 (FATP1) as the cause of this condition in members of an affected Chinese family. We undertook Sanger sequencing of this gene in 14 affected unrelated individuals affected by MRS. We did not detect any putative pathogenic variants. Our data indicates that there is both clinical and genetic heterogeneity

Vulvar fetal rhabdomyoma mimicking 46XX sex differentiation disorder.

Rhabdomiomas are rare mesenchymal benign tumors of striated muscle origin. Setting aside the cardiac (most atrial) rhabdomiomas typically associated to neurocutaneous syndromes (tuberous sclerosis), extracardiac rhabdomyomas appear clinically as a subcutaneous nodule or as a submucosal polypoid lesion. Among them, three main histologic subtypes can be differentiated on the basis of the degree of tumor differentiation: 1) fetal rhabdomioma, usually diagnosed during childhood and almost exclusively located in the in the head and neck region with rare reports in other locations; 2) adult rhabdomi

Sturge-Weber syndrome accompanied with multiple congenital intracranial lesions.

Sturge-Weber syndrome is one of the neurocutaneous syndromes. It is a rare, nonfamiliar disease that is characterized by facial port-wine stain, leptomeningeal angiomatosis, choroidal angioma, buphthalmos, intracranial calcification, cerebral atrophy, mental retardation, glaucoma, seizures and hemiparesis. CT and MR are complementary in the evaluation of this disease. Epilepsy is an essential feature of Sturge-Weber syndrome and it has a major significance for prognosis and treatment. We report a 2-year-old boy with Sturge-Weber syndrome who had in addition an intracranial lipoma, a temporal a

Macrocephaly and chromosome disorders: a case report.

We report the case of a young patient with macrocephaly. After excluding the most frequent causes of macrocephaly (hereditary disorders, degenerative, osseous and metabolic diseases, neurocutaneous syndromes and cerebral malformations), the likelihood of a chromosome disorder was investigated, revealing an unbalanced de novo translocation: 46,X,der(X),t(X;7) (q13 or q13.2; q11.23 or q21.11), i.e., a partial trisomy of the long arm of chromosome 7, associated with a partial monosomy of the long arm of chromosome X. Though this chromosome disorder is relatively rare, it should be considered in t

MR imaging of symptomatic neurocutaneous melanosis in children.

Neurocutaneous melanosis is a syndrome consisting of cutaneous nevi and melanocytosis of the leptomeninges. Over a 5-year period (1989-1994) we evaluated with MR imaging the central nervous system of five children with a confirmed histologic diagnosis of neurocutaneous melanosis. The children ranged in age from 7 to 10 years and consisted of two girls and three boys. They all had multiple pigmented skin lesions (cutaneous nevi) and presented with seizures, signs of raised intracranial pressure, cranial nerve palsies and/or myelopathy. The MR studies were performed with T1-weighted, T2-weighted
