Postoperative paraplegia as a result of undiagnosed primitive neuroectodermal tumor, not epidural analgesia.

Postoperative paraplegia is a rare complication after epidural analgesia and often occurs with spinal hematoma or cord injury. We present the case of a 16-year-old girl who suffered from a tumor mass in the neck and abdomen who underwent gynecologic operation. Preoperatively, liver metastasis was found by computed tomography. Pathologic findings revealed that the abdominal mass was an ovarian dermoid cyst. After the operation, the patient complained of paraplegia while receiving epidural analgesia for postoperative pain control. A peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in the thoracic and

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma with long-term follow-up.

We have reported a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma (PNET/EWS) in a 32-year-old female who had had no symptoms until the tumor was detected in a general examination after she gave birth. Chest X-ray showed a well-defined, rounded mass in the left lower lung field. Computed tomographic scan of the chest revealed a distinct mass adjacent to the anterolateral thoracic wall. The macroscopic findings had shown a well-capsulated tumor with a stalk emanating from the thoracic wall. PNET/EWS was histologically diagnosed. The tumor was composed of atypical, small round cells. It

Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor manifesting as abducens nerve palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) occurring as an extra-axial lesion within the intracranial space and extending to the subarachnoid space is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: An 18-month-old girl presented with an intracranial peripheral PNET manifesting as abducens nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging on admission revealed a lesion affecting the trigeminal and abducens nerves. The tumor was partially removed via the subtemporal approach. Histological examination showed a high-grade, undifferentiated neoplasm of small cell type with positive immunostaining for MIC

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cervix: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of two cases.

Two cases of primary primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the cervix are presented. The two female patients are 35 and 51 years of age who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding of several weeks' duration. On gynecologic examination, a mass in the cervical area was palpated and a biopsy was obtained. The initial biopsy was interpreted as possible small cell carcinoma in both women. A radical hysterectomy was performed in both patients. Grossly, in both cases, the uterine cervix showed an ill-defined tumor involving the ectocervix and endocervix, measuring 3.0 and 4.0 cm in greatest dimension,

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the vulva: report of a case with imprint cytology.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the vulva is an extremely rare disease, and, to our knowledge, only two cases have been previously reported. CASE: A 45-year-old woman presented with a mass in the right labium major. Three years after removal of the tumor, she noticed a new lesion in the same place and underwent a partial vulvectomy. The imprint cytology of the recurrent tumor showed a monomorphic appearance, composed of small round cells with scant cytoplasm against a hemorrhagic background. These tumor cells were loosely connective, but rosettelike structures

Peripheral-type primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising in the tentorium. Case report.

The authors report the case of a peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) arising in the tentorium in a 5-year-old boy who presented with frequent vomiting and mild palsy of the left abducent nerve. Following complete surgical excision of the tumor via a transpetrosal approach, the patient has thus far been disease free for 7 years. The tumor tissue was composed of small cells with uniform round nuclei and minimal identifiable cytoplasm. Homer-Wright rosettes were frequently observed. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated a positive reaction to HBA-71, which recognizes the cell sur

Extensive cerebrospinal fluid enhancement with gadopentetate dimeglumine in a primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

We report a case of diffuse enhancement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) after intravenous administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine in an 8-year-old girl with a primitive neuroectodermal tumor. The enhancement of the CSF was caused by leakage of gadolinium chelate complexes into the CSF, which was proved by CSF analysis.

Importance of studying primitive neuroectodermal tumors and extraosseous Ewings sarcoma of the vagina and vulva.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNT) and Ewing's sarcoma are rare, round-cell tumors, characterized by the presence of the t(11; 22)(q24; q12) chromosomal translocation. A review of the literature revealed only 38 previously reported cases of vulvar PNT and Ewing's sarcoma and 15 vaginal PNT and Ewing's sarcoma. Although rare, these types of tumors should be taken into consideration when making a differential diagnosis for vulvar or vaginal tumors. The currently available data is limited, and therefore, case reports are essential for improving knowledge and management of these types of extrem

Multiple Ewing Sarcoma/Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors in the Mediastinum: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/PNET) are high-grade malignant neoplasms. These malignancies present very rare tumors of thoracopulmonary area and even rarer in the mediastinum. In our knowledge, ES/PNET presented with multiple mediastinal masses has not been reported previously. We experienced a case of a 42-year-old man presented with gradual onset of left-side pleuritic chest pain. A contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) scan showed separate 2 large heterogeneously enhancing masses in each anterior and middle mediastinum of the left hemithorax. Positron emissio

Detection of genetic and chromosomal aberrations in medulloblastomas and primitive neuroectodermal tumors with DNA microarrays.

Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most frequent infratentorial malignant brain tumor in children. In contrast, primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is defined as a supratentorial malignant tumor generated from the cerebral hemisphere. These tumors have considerable histological overlap but have different clinical outcomes including overall survival period, recurrence rate, and chemosensitivity. We investigated the amplification and/or deletion of genes and the chromosomal gain and/or loss in 10 MBs and 3 PNETs with a genomic DNA microarray system. Genes that are frequently amplified in these both

Treatment strategies for high-risk medulloblastoma and supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors. Review of the literature.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are malignant tumors with a high propensity to disseminate throughout the cerebrospinal fluid. Current treatment guidelines are largely determined by clinically based prognostic factors, the most important of which are tumor location and the extent of tumor spread. Although the cure rate for high-risk PNETs has improved, the irreversible sequelae of craniospinal axis radiation treatment in patients who survive have motivated researchers to investigate more fully which patients can safely receive less treatment. The author reviews the literature, describ

Neuroectodermal immunophenotype in uterine malignant mullerian tumors (MMT): comparative immunohistochemical analysis with embryonal uterine development.

Multidirectional differentiation of neoplastic cells in uterine MMT is still a subject of controversy. The present study was designed to assess the immunophenotype of 15 uterine MMT paying special attention to the markers of neural (neuroendocrine) differentiation. In addition, the same immunohistochemical study was performed on 20 human fetal specimens in order to establish possible relationships between the immunophenotype of MMT and the expression of the corresponding antigens in the fetal tissues of the embryonal female genital tract. Besides the typical immunohistochemical patterns in thr

Does sophisticated diagnostic workup on neuroectodermal tumors have an impact on the treatment of esthesioneuroblastoma?

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic workup on esthesioneuroblastoma is more extensive than ever before. We have investigated whether improvements in diagnosis of sinonasal neuroectodermal tumors, including esthesioneuroblastomas (ENB), sinonasal neuroendocrine carcinomas (SNEC) and sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas (SNUC), have had an impact on treatment and outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 11 ENB, 7 SNEC and 1 SNUC in 13 men and 6 women (average age 52.9 years (range 26-82)), diagnosed between 1986 and 2001, were analyzed with regard to histopathologic and clinical diagnosis as well as outcome. Alternative EWS-FLI1 fusion gene and MIC2 expression in peripheral and central primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) occur either in the central nervous system (CNS; central PNET, cPNET) or in the peripheral sites (peripheral PNET, pPNET). Recent molecular approaches have been defining a new concept of PNET, that is, the pPNET including Ewing's sarcoma (ES) which expresses MIC2 glycoprotein and shows the specific chimeric gene of EWS-FLI1. The expression of MIC2 and the genetic rearrangement of EWS-FLI1 are considered to be highly specific to the pPNET/ES. This study examined the expression of MIC2 and EWS-FLI1 gene by means of immunohistochemistry and reverse transcri

[Current and future strategies in interdisciplinary treatment of medulloblastomas, supratentorial PNET (primitive neuroectodermal tumors) and intracranial germ cell tumors in childhood].

BACKGROUND: The chances for cure in medulloblastoma, supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (stPNET) and intracranial germ cell tumors have decisively improved within the last decades. Today long-term survival in the range between 60% and 80% and more than 90%, respectively, can be achieved. The low incidence of brain tumors in childhood and the necessity for optimal patient care has led to the fact that more than 90% of children are treated within national and international controlled studies today in order to assure a constant improvement of therapeutic outcome. Recent developments

Fine-Needle Aspiration of Metastatic Central Type Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors in Patients with a Germ Cell Tumor.

OBJECTIVE: Central type primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are some of the most frequent somatic type tumors derived from germ cell tumors and can metastasize. We studied the cytomorphological features of metastatic central type PNET by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computerized search of our laboratory information system was performed for the 9-year period from 2005 through 2014 to identify all cytology cases in which a diagnosis of metastatic central type PNET had been rendered. A total of 5 FNA cases were collected and direct smears were reexamined. RESULTS:

The role of xenografting in pediatric brain tumor research with specific emphasis on medulloblastoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumors of childhood.

Pre-clinical models have an important role in cancer research. This review looks at the history as well as advantages and limitations of several animal models used in the study of pediatric brain tumors. The neoplasms of specific interest are the medulloblastoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor category of brain tumors, because of their relevance to concurrent clinical research and practice. Given the historic poor record for direct heterotransplantation of these malignancies, both the conventional subcutaneous site and immune-privileged sites are assessed, with particular emphasis on models ad

Atypical pleomorphic extraosseous ewing tumor/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor with unusual phenotypic/genotypic profile.

A pleomorphic undifferentiated tumor primarily located in the retroperitoneum with a phenotype compatible with an extraosseous Ewing tumor/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ET/pPNET) pattern and unusual molecular features is described. Immunohistochemically, HBA-71 (CD99/mic2) and several neural markers were intensively expressed together with scattered cells expressing carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Short-term culture showed biphasic neuroblastic and epithelioid cell populations, with the latter expressing germ cell markers (CEA, alpha-fetoprotein, and the beta-subunit of chorionic

Primary Endometrium Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor with Diagnostic and Treatment Challenges: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a rare and aggressive malignancy, with primary occurrence in the endometrium being uncommon. Due to nonspecific clinical and imaging features, it is frequently misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and poor prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old woman with persistent abnormal uterine bleeding, initially misdiagnosed as benign endometrial polyp following curettage. Subsequent imaging revealed a large intrauterine mass, and definitive diagnosis of primary endometrium PNET was established through histopatholog

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor of the ileum: A case report and review of imaging characteristics.

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumors (MGNETs) are extremely rare malignant mesenchymal tumors derived from ectodermal neural cells of the gastrointestinal tract that most commonly arise in the small intestine. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging owing to the lack of well-established imaging characteristics. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old female patient with MGNET of the ileum. Computed tomography revealed a highly lobulated hypervascular mass and circumferential wall thickening in the distal ileum, whereas magnetic resonance imaging revealed marked diffusion restricti
