Bioresource amendment promotes early mineralization and nitrification recovery in ammonium-rich rare earth tailings.

Rare earth tailings soil retains high residual NH4+-N after in-situ leaching with ammonium sulfate, creating coupled risks of nitrogen loss and poor revegetation. The substrate and microbial pathways that reopen ammonia oxidation and mediate nitrification restart in this ammonium rich rare earth tailings soil remain unclear. To address this gap, a microcosm incubation over time compared an unamended soil, MgO, and manure, integrating nitrogen transformations, net mineralization, enzymes, qPCR, and shotgun metagenomics. Under OM, extractable NH4+-N declined by 88.3 % from its initial value, whi

Tree-ring nitrogen isotopes reflect anthropogenic NOx emissions and climatic effects.

Anthropogenic emissions of atmospheric nitrogen have increased over the last century, but the monitoring of nitrous oxide concentrations is only recent. Can trees from temperate regions be used to infer past changes in nitrogen cycles? To considerthis question, we investigate nitrogen isotope (delta15N) ring series from pine and beech trees near Montréal, and beech specimens of Georgian Bay Islands. The delta15N values show coherent intertree and interspecies trends, independent of the sapwood-heartwood transition zones, implying that these results reflect local environmental conditions. At bo

Warming increased the promotion of atmospheric CO2 concentration on biological nitrogen fixation by changing the nifH gene community.

Understanding the nitrogen (N) fixation process in rice paddies under anticipated climate change is vital for regulating the soil N cycle, solving N pollution, and improving agricultural productivity in the agricultural system. To clarify the changes in nitrogen fixation under elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and temperature in rice paddies, we constructed an automated platform consisting of Open-Top Chamber. We set up four treatments: CK (ambient CO2 concentration + ambient temperature), EC (increase in CO2 concentration by 200 μmol mol-1 + ambient temperature), ET (ambient CO2 con

Climate warming, but not Spartina alterniflora invasion, enhances wetland soil HONO and NOx emissions.

Climate warming and invasive plant growth (plant invasion) may aggravate air pollution by affecting soil nitrogen (N) cycling and the emissions of reactive N gases, such as nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, little is known about the response of soil NOy (HONO + NOx) emissions and microbial functional genes to the interaction of climate warming and plant invasion. Here, we found that experimental warming (approximately 1.5 °C), but not Spartina alterniflora invasion, increased NOy emissions (0-140 ng N m-2 s-1) of treated wetland soils by 4-10 fold. Warming also decreased

Dissolved organic carbon drives nutrient cycling via microbial community in paddy soil.

Microbial mediated iron cycling drives the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. However, the fate of the microbial community and the relative metabolic pathways in paddy soil after the addition of biogas slurry are poorly understood. In this study, the response of functional genes was investigated by growing one-season rice in paddy soils in a pot experiment. Seven treatments were prepared: 1) control (CK); 2) organic carbon (OC); 3) fertilizer (F); 4) 5% of biogas slurry (B05); 5) 10% of biogas slurry (B10); 6) 15% of biogas slurry (B15); 7) 20% of biogas slurry

Soil proteogenomics uncover microbial strategies for soil depth-specific carbon cycling under whole-soil warming conditions.

Soils are Earth's largest carbon reservoir, yet microbial mechanisms controlling decomposition, and their warming response, remain poorly resolved, especially in subsoils. Using genome-resolved proteogenomics within a replicated whole-soil warming experiment (0-90 cm, +4 °C, 7.5 years) we map microbial traits, their depth stratification, and warming responses. Depth is the dominant driver of microbial community and trait structure. Depth-wise, metabolism converge on low-molecular-weight and C1 compounds, challenging glucose-centric models, with surface soils enriched in methanol oxidation and

Microbial mechanisms regulate soil carbon dynamics under nitrogen addition in mangrove wetlands of Dongzhai Harbor, Southern China.

Soil is an important medium for horizontal and vertical carbon (C) exchange in coastal wetlands. Understanding the response mechanism of soil C dynamic changes is of great significance for regulating the C cycle and mitigating climate change. This study explored the C dynamics and microbial mechanisms in mangrove wetlands under nitrogen (N) input conditions through established a simulation experiments. Results showed that the wetland soil served as a source of CO2 and a sink of CH4. C loss originates from vertical soil CO2 emissions (-25.25 to 275.38 mg C m-2 h-1) and horizontal dissolved orga

Synergistic mechanisms of denitrification in FeS2-based constructed wetlands: Effects of organic carbon availability under day-night alterations.

In constructed wetlands (CWs), carbon source availability profoundly affected microbial metabolic activities engaged in both iron cycle and nitrogen metabolism. However, research gaps existed in understanding the biotransformation of nitrogen and iron in response to fluctuations in organic carbon content under day-night alterations. Results demonstrated increased removal efficiency of NO3--N (95.7 %) and NH4+-N (75.70 %) under light conditions, attributed to increased total organic carbon (TOC). This enhancement promoted the relative abundance of bacteria involved in nitrogen and iron processe

Metagenomics reveals the effect of long-term fertilization on carbon cycle in the maize rhizosphere.

Long-term fertilization can result in the changes in carbon (C) cycle in the maize rhizosphere soil. However, there have been few reports on the impacts of microbial regulatory mechanisms on the C cycle in soil. In the study, we analyzed the response of functional genes that regulate the C fixation, decomposition and methane (CH4) metabolism in maize rhizosphere soil to different fertilization treatments using metagenomics analysis. As the dominant C fixation pathway in maize rhizosphere soil, the abundance of the functional genes regulating the reductive citrate cycle (rTCA cycle) including k

Methionine restriction constrains lipoylation and activates mitochondria for nitrogenic synthesis of amino acids.

Methionine restriction (MR) provides metabolic benefits in many organisms. However, mechanisms underlying the MR-induced effect remain incompletely understood. Here, we show in the budding yeast S. cerevisiae that MR relays a signal of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) deprivation to adapt bioenergetic mitochondria to nitrogenic anabolism. In particular, decreases in cellular SAM constrain lipoate metabolism and protein lipoylation required for the operation of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in the mitochondria, leading to incomplete glucose oxidation with an exit of acetyl-CoA and α-ketoglutarat

Effects of uranium concentration on microbial community structure and functional potential.

Located in the Northern Territory of Australia, Ranger uranium mine is directly adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park, with rehabilitation targets needed to ensure the site can be incorporated into the park following the mine's closure in 2026. This study aimed to understand the impact of uranium concentration on microbial communities, in order to identify and describe potential breakpoints in microbial ecosystem services. This is the first study to report in situ deployment of uranium-spiked sediments along a concentration gradient (0-4000 mg U kg-1 ), with the stu

Concurrent isotope-assisted metabolic flux analysis and transcriptome profiling reveal responses of poplar cells to altered nitrogen and carbon supply.

Reduced nitrogen is indispensable to plants. However, its limited availability in soil combined with the energetic and environmental impacts of nitrogen fertilizers motivates research into molecular mechanisms toward improving plant nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). We performed a systems-level investigation of this problem by employing multiple 'omics methodologies on cell suspensions of hybrid poplar (Populus tremula × Populus alba). Acclimation and growth of the cell suspensions in four nutrient regimes ranging from abundant to deficient supplies of carbon and nitrogen revealed that cell growt

Acorus calamus recycled as an additional carbon source in a microbial fuel cell-constructed wetland for enhanced nitrogen removal.

Acorus calamus was recycled as an additional carbon source in microbial fuel cell-constructed wetlands (MFC-CWs), for efficient nitrogen removal of low carbon wastewater. The pretreatment methods, adding positions, and nitrogen transformations were investigated. Results indicated that alkali-pretreatment cleaved the benzene rings in dominant released organics, producing chemical oxygen demand of 164.5 mg from per gram of A. calamus. Pretreated biomass addition in the anode of MFC-CW attained the maximum total nitrogen removal of 97.6% and power generation of 12.5 mW/m2, which were higher than

High nitrite-nitrogen stress intensity drives nitrite anaerobic oxidation to nitrate and inhibits methanogenesis.

Nitrite is an important intermediate in nitrogen metabolism. We explored the effect of nitrite-nitrogen stress intensity (NNSI) on nitrite metabolism and methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion. The results showed that the NNSI regulated microbial diversity, composition, and functions, and microbial community assembly was primarily shaped by stochastic processes. Moreover, the NNSI was negatively correlated with α-diversity and positively correlated with non-metric multi-dimensional scaling distance. Denitrification gradually increased with increasing NNSI; however, methanogenesis was gradually

Nutrient enrichment mitigates estuarine wetland CO2 emissions by reducing fungal stability and temperature sensitivity.

Increasing global nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deposition significantly impacts carbon cycling in estuarine wetlands, yet the underlying microbial mechanisms remain unclear. This study selected the Phragmites australis wetland in the Shanyutan of the Min River Estuary as the research site. Four treatments were set up: control (CK), nitrogen (N) addition, phosphorus (P) addition, and combined nitrogen and phosphorus (NP) addition. Through a one-year in-situ experiment, we investigated how N, P, and combined NP additions regulate soil CO2 emissions, temperature sensitivity (Q10), and fungal c

Integrative multi-omics elucidates the impact of microalgae on growth, quality, phytohormones, and rhizosphere microbiome of Angelica sinensis.

Microalgae have recently been recognized as sustainable biofertilizers that improve soil fertility while enhancing crop performance. However, their roles in regulating medicinal plant growth and quality, as well as the underlying ecological mechanisms, remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically assessed the effects of three representative microalgae-Anabaena cylindrica (AC), Phormidium tenue (PT), and Chlorella vulgaris (CV)-on the growth, quality, hormonal regulation, soil nutrient dynamics, and rhizosphere microbiome of Angelica sinensis. Field inoculation trials demonstrated

Metabolic Flux Analysis Reveals Cell Line-Specific Rewiring in CHO Cells Following TCA Cycle Intermediate Feeding for Bioprocess pH Control.

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the leading host for recombinant therapeutic protein production in the biopharma industry. In this study, we investigated how feeding acidic forms of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates-malic acid, succinic acid, and α-ketoglutaric acid-affects cell culture performance and metabolism in two industrial IgG-producing CHO cell lines. These intermediates were used as pH control agents to replace conventional CO2 sparging, enabling simultaneous modulation of the bioreactor environment and cell metabolism. Adaptation of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) to Abiotic Stresses: A Special Perspective of Responses to Nitrogen and Phosphate Limitations.

Amongst various environmental constraints, abiotic stresses are increasing the risk of food insecurity worldwide by limiting crop production and disturbing the geographical distribution of food crops. Millets are known to possess unique features of resilience to adverse environments, especially infertile soil conditions, although the underlying mechanisms are yet to be determined. The small diploid genome, short stature, excellent seed production, C4 photosynthesis, and short life cycle of foxtail millet make it a very promising model crop for studying nutrient stress responses. Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous Structures from Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Utilization Enabling High Performances in Hybrid Sodium-Ion Energy Storages.

Sodium-ion energy storage is of the most attractive candidate for commercialization adoption due to the safety and cost demands of large-scale energy storage systems, but its low energy density, slow charging capability, and poor cycle stability are yet to be overcome. Here, a strategy is reported to realize high-performance sodium-ion energy storage using battery-type anode and capacitor-type cathode materials. First, nitrogen-doped mesoporous titanium dioxide (NMTiO2) structures are synthesized via the controlled pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks. They exhibit interconnected open mesopor

Enhancing manganese redox-driven nitrogen removal by integrating manganese ore with microelectrolysis into constructed wetlands.

Microelectrolysis-integrated constructed wetlands (e-CWs) typically exhibit limited total phosphorus (TP) removal performance, while manganese ore-amended CWs (MOCWs) encounter challenges associated with the interplay between Mn redox cycling and nitrogen transformation. To overcome these limitations, this study introduced MO around the cathode or anode regions in e-CWs, designated as e-CMOCW and e-AMOCW, respectively. Results demonstrated that manganese oxides accelerated NH4+-N removal. Additionally, microelectrolysis enhanced the reductive dissolution of MO, increasing Mn2+ production. This
