The role of nitrogen dioxide in the prevalence of adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China: a national multi-pollutant geospatial analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CCVDs) pose a severe global health threat, particularly among middle-aged and elderly populations. Ambient air pollution is a well-recognized environmental risk factor for CCVDs, yet existing studies often focus on single pollutants or outcomes, lacking comprehensive evaluations. This study aimed to systematically explore the associations between multiple air pollutants and three core adverse CCVD outcomes (hypertension, heart disease, stroke) in middle-aged and elderly individuals. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Data were integrated from the

Surface Lattice Oxygen Activation by Nitrogen-Doped Manganese Dioxide as an Effective and Longevous Catalyst for Indoor HCHO Decomposition.

Oxygen vacancy plays an important role in catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), but the inherent drawback of its thermodynamic instability causes the deactivation of catalysts. Hence, improving the thermodynamic stability of oxygen vacancy is a crux during HCHO oxidation. Here, a novel and simple nitrogen doping of MnO2/C catalyst is designed for HCHO oxidation at room temperature. The surface lattice oxygen of MnO2 will be activated by nitrogen-doping, which acts as active sites for HCHO oxidation and solves the thermodynamic instability issue of oxygen vacancy. Furthermore, carbon is d

Ascendancy of Nitrogen Heterocycles in the Computationally Designed Mn(I)PNN Pincer Catalysts on the Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Methanol.

The development of sustainable catalysts to get methanol from CO2 under milder conditions and without any additives is still considered an arduous task. In many instances, transition-metal-catalyzed carbon dioxide to formic acid formation is more facile than methanol formation. This article provides comprehensive density functional theoretic investigations of six new Mn(I)PNN complexes, which are designed to perform CO2 to methanol conversion under milder reaction conditions. All these six catalysts have similar structural features except at terminal nitrogen, -N (1), where adenine-inspired ni

Immunochemical detection of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide trapping of the tyrosyl radical and the resulting nitrotyrosine in sperm whale myoglobin.

We demonstrate herein that nitric oxide (*NO) and nitrogen dioxide (*NO2) both react with the tyrosyl radical formed in sperm whale myoglobin (swMb) by reaction with hydrogen peroxide. The tyrosyl radical was detected by Western blotting using a novel anti-5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) polyclonal antiserum that specifically recognizes protein radical-derived DMPO nitrone adducts. In the presence of DMPO, hydrogen peroxide reacts with swMb to form the DMPO tyrosyl radical as is known from both electron spin resonance and immuno-spin trapping investigations. Both *NO and NO2- significa

Personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide in Switzerland. SAPALDIA team. Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults.

Home indoor and outdoor levels, and personal exposures to NO2 were determined for more than 500 subjects in a subpopulation of SAPALDIA by using passive samplers. The overall personal NO2 average was found to be 27 micrograms m-3, the overall indoor average 21 micrograms m-3 and the overall outdoor average 31 micrograms m-3. Personal NO2 levels ranged between the outdoor and indoor levels, with the exception of study areas with low NO2 concentrations. In the winter, the indoor/outdoor ratios were lower than in the summer. Outdoor NO2 levels were higher in winter. In some study areas, indoor NO

Acute effects of 0.12 ppm ozone or 0.12 ppm nitrogen dioxide on pulmonary function in healthy and asthmatic adolescents.

Adolescent asthmatic subjects have been shown to be much more sensitive than healthy adolescents to the inhaled effects of sulfur dioxide. To test whether similar adolescent asthmatics are more sensitive to other common ambient air pollutants, 10 healthy and 10 asthmatic adolescent subjects were exposed for 60 min to filtered air, 0.12 ppm ozone (O3), and 0.12 ppm nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on separate days at rest. The following pulmonary functional values were measured before, at 30 min, and after 60 min of exposure: peak flow, total pulmonary resistance (RT), thoracic gas volume at functional r

Development of SAFT-based heteronuclear fused coarse-grained models of short alkanes and their mixtures with carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Coarse-grained models for short n-alkanes were developed that capture the vapor-liquid equilibria of both their pure components and their mixtures with carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. We utilized an equation of state, namely Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT), in which chain models were composed of fused segments interacting via the Mie potential, parameterized according to group contribution principles. The molecular parameters predicted by SAFT were used as initial guesses to determine the necessary adjustments to make these mo

Nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide/schwertmannite nanocomposites as heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts with enhanced efficiency for the degradation of bisphenol A.

Potential health risks related to environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) have aroused research hotspots at the forefront of water treatment technologies. Herein, nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide/schwertmannite nanocomposites (N-TiO2/SCH) have been successfully developed as heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of typical EEDs via photo-Fenton processes. Due to the sustainable Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion induced by photoelectrons, as-prepared N-TiO2/SCH nanocomposites exhibit much enhanced efficiency for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA; ca. 100% within 60 min under visible irradiation

Childhood autism spectrum disorders and exposure to nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter air pollution: A review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Genetic and environmental factors have been recognized to play an important role in autism. The possibility that exposure to outdoor air pollution increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been an emerging area of research. Herein, we present a systematic review, and meta-analysis of published epidemiological studies that have investigated these associations. METHODS: We undertook a comprehensive search strategy to identify studies that investigated outdoor air pollution and autism in children. Overall, seven cohorts and five case-control studies met o

Association of early-life exposure to household gas appliances and indoor nitrogen dioxide with cognition and attention behavior in preschoolers.

The authors investigated the association of early-life exposure to indoor air pollution with neuropsychological development in preschoolers and assessed whether this association differs by glutathione-S-transferase gene (GSTP1) polymorphisms. A prospective, population-based birth cohort was set up in Menorca, Spain, in 1997-1999 (n = 482). Children were assessed for cognitive functioning (McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities) and attention-hyperactivity behaviors (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition) at age 4 years. During the first 3 months of life, informati

[In vitro studies of modification of mucociliary clearance by guinea pig tracheas by exposure to air pollutants of sulfur or nitrogen dioxide].

We studied the effect of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on mucociliary activity (MCA) and ciliary beat frequency (CBF) in 63 guinea pig tracheas. The tracheas were placed in a gas cylinder and exposed for 30 minutes to SO2 concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 12.5 ppm or to NO2 concentrations ranging from 3.0 to 15.0 ppm. Control experiments were performed with exposure of the tracheas to synthetic air. MCA was measured by recording the light reflected from ciliated mucous membranes using an infrared barcode reader and CBF using video-interference microscopy. The exposure to 2.5

The nitric oxide/heme protein complex as a biologic marker of exposure to nitrogen dioxide in humans, rats, and in vitro models.

In an effort to develop a biologic marker of exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), we investigated the in vivo formation of a complex between heme proteins and nitric oxide (NO). In aqueous solution, NO2 disproportionates to NO and nitrate. The NO binds to the iron of heme proteins to form an electron spin resonance (ESR)-detectable complex. We have shown that when rat liver, lung, or nasal microsomes are exposed to 20 ppm NO2 in vitro, an ESR signal attributable to an NO/heme protein complex is detected. After inhalation exposure of rats to 20 ppm NO2 for 6 h, this same ESR signal was detected

Associations between residential fossil fuel combustion and indoor concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes in Canadian homes.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing attention on the effects of residential fossil fuel combustion, particularly the use of natural gas or oil, on indoor air quality. Given the prevalent use of natural gas in Canadian homes, understanding its influence on indoor air quality is important. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated associations between indoor levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde with potential emission sources and other influencing factors in 344 homes in four Canadian cities. METHODS: Using mixed models and general linear models, we evalu

Nitrogen dioxide induces cis-trans-isomerization of arachidonic acid within cellular phospholipids. Detection of trans-arachidonic acids in vivo.

Oxygen free radicals oxidize arachidonic acid to a complex mixture of metabolites termed isoeicosanoids that share structural similarity to enzymatically derived eicosanoids. However, little is known about oxidations of arachidonic acid mediated by reactive radical nitrogen oxides. We have studied the reaction of arachidonic acid with NO2, a free radical generated by nitric oxide and nitrite oxidations. A major group of products appeared to be a mixture of arachidonic acid isomers having one trans-bond and three cis-double bonds. We have termed these new products trans-arachidonic acids. These

Engineering of Copper-Based Nitrogen-Rich Covalent Triazine Frameworks (Cu@CTFs) as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Carbon Dioxide Reduction.

In this study, we employed a simple and efficient method to synthesize two porous covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) using a cyanuric chloride core with both 1,4-diaminobenzene and 1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine, which were subsequently embedded with copper acetate, giving Cu@CTF electrocatalysts. The composite materials were comprehensively characterized, and their performance in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) was systematically evaluated. The Cu@CTFs exhibited significant enhancements in CO2RR performance compared to their unmodified counterparts. The as-synthesized Cu@CC-BP
