Increasing evidence has revealed a significant association between microorganisms and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Porphyromonas gingivalis, the keystone pathogen in chronic periodontitis, is considered an important potential etiologic agent of OSCC, but the underlying immune mechanisms through which P. gingivalis mediates tumor progression of the oral cancer remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of connexin 43 (Cx43) in various stages of oral carcinogenesis and explore the relation between Cx43 and oral mucous carcinogenesis.
METHODS: 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) was used for inducing oral carcinogenesis in SD rats. The object of the study was to identify any potential therapeutic advantage in using the two antischistosomal drugs, oxamniquine and praziquantel, in combination rather than separately, in the treatment of schistosomiasis. The efficacy of the drugs was studied in albino mice with mature Schistosoma mansoni infections. It was found that the efficacy of combinations of the two drugs was markedly superior to that expected on the basis of a simple additive effect. The significance of this synergistic action is discussed in the context of schistosomiasis therapy in man.

Oral oxamniquine 800 mg/m2 body surface area/day in divided doses for 2 days, was given to 57 children with schistosomal infections. Haematological and biochemical tests suggest that this drug is safe, even in the presence of significant liver enlargement. Parasitological investigations in 32 children who were followed up for 1 month indicate that oxamniquine is effective in the treatment of S. mansoni infection, but that it has little effect on S. haematobium infection.

OBJECTIVE: The density of tumor-associated high endothelial venule (TA-HEV) correlates with a favorable prognosis in various tumors, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Despite the association of TA-HEVs with a better prognosis, their changes during tumor progression remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine these alterations in a mouse OSCC model.
METHODS: Mice were treated with water containing 4NQO to establish a mouse OSCC model. Immunohistochemical analyses were performed using CD31 and MECA 79 antibodies to evaluate TA-HEV alterations during tumor progression.
