Mathematical Modelling of Bacterial Meningitis Transmission Dynamics with Control Measures.

Vaccination and treatment are the most effective ways of controlling the transmission of most infectious diseases. While vaccination helps susceptible individuals to build either a long-term immunity or short-term immunity, treatment reduces the number of disease-induced deaths and the number of infectious individuals in a community/nation. In this paper, a nonlinear deterministic model with time-dependent controls has been proposed to describe the dynamics of bacterial meningitis in a population. The model is shown to exhibit a unique globally asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium ℰ0

Nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability for the assessment of Dysphoria.

Dysphoric patients show symptoms associated with Major Depression, although within a narrowed symptomatology spectrum. In prevailing practice, clinicians assess Dysphoria through psychological scores and questionnaires exclusively, therefore without taking into account objective biomarkers. In this study, we investigated heartbeat linear and nonlinear dynamics aiming to an objective assessment of Dysphoria. To this end, we derived standard and nonlinear measures from heart rate variability (HRV) series gathered from dysphoric (n=14) and nondysphoric (n=17) undergraduate students during 5 minut

The role of screening and treatment in the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis co-infection: a mathematical study.

In this paper, we present a deterministic non-linear mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of HIV and TB co-infection and analyze it in the presence of screening and treatment. The equilibria of the model are computed and stability of these equilibria is discussed. The basic reproduction numbers corresponding to both HIV and TB are found and we show that the disease-free equilibrium is stable only when the basic reproduction numbers for both the diseases are less than one. When both the reproduction numbers are greater than one, the co-infection equilibrium point may exist. The co-i

Quasi-objective nonlinear principal component analysis.

By means of mathematical analysis and numerical experimentation, this study shows that the problems of non-uniqueness of solutions and data over-fitting, that plague the multilayer feedforward neural network for NonLinear Principal Component Analysis (NLPCA), are caused by inappropriate architecture of the neural network. A simplified two-hidden-layer feedforward neural network, which has no encoding layer and no bias term in the mathematical definitions of bottleneck and output neurons, is proposed to conduct NLPCA. This new, compact NLPCA model alleviates the aforementioned problems encounte

Biogas pre-upgrading by adsorption of trace compounds onto granular activated carbons and an activated carbon fiber-cloth.

The study assesses the adsorption onto activated carbon materials of selected volatile organic compounds -VOCs- (dichloromethane, 2-propanol, toluene, siloxane D4) in a biogas matrix composed of methane and carbon dioxide (55:45 v/v). Three different adsorbents are tested, two of them are granular activated carbon (GAC), and the last is an activated carbon fiber-cloth (ACFC). The adsorption isotherm data are fitted by different models by nonlinear regression. The Langmuir-Freundlich model appears to be the adequate one to describe the adsorption phenomena independently of the VOC considered or

Relationship between metabolism and biomass of medically important zygomycetes.

Little is known about the relationships between metabolic activity and fungal biomass or time of incubation for medically important fungal pathogens. Understanding these relationships may be especially relevant for rapidly growing organisms, such as zygomycetes. A range of inocula of five clinical isolates of zygomycetes (one each of Rhizopus oryzae,Rhizopus microsporus, Cunninghamella bertholletiae, Mucor circinelloides and Absidia corymbifera) were incubated for 6, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h, after which hyphal mass was assessed spectrophotometrically and metabolic activity was measured using variou

Dynamics of effortful touch and interlimb coordination.

In biological movement systems, the level of muscular-articular links is responsible for assembling highly reliable, stable, and reproducible coordination patterns involving very many joints and muscles. Research shows that the important perceptual capabilities of this level arise from the bulk sensitivity of muscles and tendons, so-called effortful or dynamic touch, to the quantities of rotational dynamics that remain invariant (such as the inertia tensor) over variations in rotational forces and motions. The power laws characterizing this sensitivity point to underlying fractal (self-similar

Respiratory influences on non-linear dynamics of heart rate variability in humans.

The goal of our study was to determine whether evidence for chaos in heart rate variability (HRV) can be observed when the respiratory input to the autonomic controller of heart rate is forced by the deterministic pattern associated with periodic breathing. We simultaneously recorded, in supine healthy volunteers, RR intervals and breathing volumes for 20 to 30 min (1024 data point series) during three protocols: rest (control), fixed breathing (15 breath/min) and voluntary periodic breathing (3 breaths with 2 s inspiration and 2 s expiration followed by an 8 s breath hold). On both the RR int

Evaluating atrial fibrillations through strange attractors dynamics.

Nonlinear dynamics is nowadays widely employed in the study of biological phenomena. In such context, taking into account that abnormal heart rhythms display chaotic behaviours, in our opinion, the specific attractor dynamics can constitute a method for evaluating various cardiac afflictions. By using mathematical procedures specific to nonlinear dynamics we devise a new method for evaluating atrial fibrillations. Using data from ECG signals, we construct strange attractors corresponding to the phase space, specific to the analyzed signals. We show that their dynamics reflect abnormal heart rh

Recurrence Triangle Features for Unsupervised Time Series Clustering: Application to Human Gait.

Unsupervised classification or clustering of complex time series generated from nonlinear dynamical systems remains challenging, particularly when signals exhibit noise and subtle structural differences. We develop a recurrence-based framework that captures local geometric patterns in recurrence plots by extracting triangular motifs, termed recurrence triangles (RTs), and mapping their relative frequencies to compact feature vectors for clustering. The approach is evaluated on four synthetic systems: the continuous-time Rössler and Lorenz systems and the discrete-time Logistic map and AR(2) mo

Characterizing short-term linear and nonlinear heart rate variability in typically developing children and adolescents.

Linear heart rate variability (HRV) quantifies heart rate (HR) changes due to stochastic processes while nonlinear HRV captures the complexity of the HR structure. Although linear HRV in childhood and adolescence has been explored, little is known about nonlinear HRV. The present study characterized short-term linear and nonlinear HRV in typically-developing children (7-12 years, n = 35) and adolescents (13-17 years, n = 29). HRV during quiet rest was assessed using a three-lead electrocardiogram for 5-min and analyzed using linear (time and frequency domain) and nonlinear (Poincáre analysis,

Biofilms as living soft materials: Towards a mechanistic description of their linear and nonlinear mechanics.

Biofilms are living materials composed of a cross-linked polymer matrix embedding active bacterial cells, whose mechanical behavior emerges from the collective organization of cells within the matrix. While significant progress has been made in characterizing their linear viscoelastic properties, this regime captures only a limited subset of their mechanical behavior, and the most relevant processes-adaptation and detachment-occur at large deformations. Experimental studies reveal a rich spectrum of nonlinear behaviors, yet a predictive description linking microscopic structure to macroscopic

Beyond linearity - a new Partial Least Squares - Path Modelling (PLS-PM) inner weighting scheme for detecting and approximating nonlinear structural relationships in Structural Equation Models.

A new inner weighting scheme for Partial Least Squares - Path Modelling (PLS-PM) is proposed to detect and approximate nonlinear structural relationships in Structural Equation Models (SEM). PLS-PM is an iterative method used for the estimation of Structural Equation Models (SEM), a widely used analytical tool for assessing causal relationships between latent variables. However, PLS-PM struggles to address the structural nonlinear relationships. To address this limitation, a new PLS-PM inner weighting scheme, smooth weighting, is proposed as an additional option to the traditional centroid, fa

Adaptive performance control of switched nonlinear systems under false data injection attacks and input saturation constraints.

Considering the controller-actuator channel subjected to false data injection (FDI) attacks, this study proposes an adaptive performance control strategy for switched nonlinear systems under composite disturbances and input saturation. The strategy achieves disturbance rejection and a more flexible prescribed performance control. In addition, implicit disturbances that are coupled with the system states in switched nonlinear systems lie beyond the capability of existing disturbance observers. Moreover, conventional prescribed performance control methods become ineffective in the presence of in

Nonlinear connectedness of conventional crypto-assets and sustainable crypto-assets with climate change: A complex systems modelling approach.

Earlier studies used classical time series models to forecast the nonlinear connectedness of conventional crypto-assets with CO2 emissions. For the first time, this study aims to provide a data-driven Nonlinear System Identification technique to study the nonlinear connectedness of crypto-assets with CO2 emissions. Using daily data from January 2, 2019, to March 31, 2023, we investigate the nonlinear connectedness among conventional crypto-assets, sustainable crypto-assets, and CO2 emissions based on our proposed model, Multiple Inputs Single Output (MISO) Nonlinear Autoregressive with Exogeno

Modeling the impact of optimized treatment patterns on dengue transmission dynamics.

Dengue fever continues to pose a severe public health threat, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Its rapid transmission through Aedes mosquitoes has led to recurrent outbreaks with devastating social, economic, and health consequences worldwide. Despite significant efforts by governments and health agencies, the disease remains endemic in many regions and poses a persistent global challenge. In response, this study develops a nonlinear dynamical model to analyze the transmission dynamics of dengue, focusing on key risk factors, disease progression, and long-term impacts. Using ana

Non-linear response of Norway spruce to climate variation along elevational and age gradients in the Carpathians.

Climate change, namely increased warming coupled with a rise in extreme events (e.g., droughts, storms, heatwaves), is negatively affecting forest ecosystems worldwide. In these ecosystems, growth dynamics and biomass accumulation are driven mainly by environmental constraints, inter-tree competition, and disturbance regimes. Usually, climate-growth relationships are assessed by linear correlation due to the simplicity and straightforwardness of modeling. However, applying this method may bias results, since the ecological and physiological responses of trees to environmental factors are non-l

Research on robust adaptive control of strong nonlinear complex large power grids.

In this paper, a Multi-Index Nonlinear Robust Adaptive Control (MINRAC) method was proposed for ultra-complex multi-input multi-output power systems with uncertain parameter factors and external disturbances. The controller designed by this method has excellent static and dynamic characteristics. Under the condition of the uncertainty of system parameters and external disturbance at the same time, the MINRAC method can ensure that the multiple indexes concerned by ultra-complex power systems can be controlled at their expected values. The simulation results showed that the control mechanism of

Computational analysis of control of hepatitis B virus disease through vaccination and treatment strategies.

Hepatitis B disease is an infection caused by a virus that severely damages the liver. The disease can be both acute and chronic. In this article, we design a new nonlinear SVEICHR model to study dynamics of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) disease. The aim is to carry out a comprehensive mathematical and computational analysis by exploiting preventive measures of vaccination and hospitalization for disease control. Mathematical properties of proposed model such as boundedness, positivity, and existence and uniqueness of the solutions are proved. We also determine the disease free and endemic equilibri

Parametric Neural Network-Based Model Free Adaptive Tracking Control Method and Its Application to AFS/DYC System.

This paper deals with adaptive nonlinear identification and trajectory tracking problem for model free nonlinear systems via parametric neural network (PNN). Firstly, a more effective PNN identifier is developed to obtain the unknown system dynamics, where a parameter error driven updating law is synthesized to ensure good identification performance in terms of accuracy and rapidity. Then, an adaptive tracking controller consisting of a feedback control term to compensate the identified nonlinearity and a sliding model control term to deal with the modeling error is established. The Lyapunov a
