PURPOSE: After the accidents of nuclear power plants at Chernobyl and at Fukushima, huge amounts of radioactive iodine were released into the atmosphere.
METHODS: We reviewed data on the health consequences of these accidents with a focus on thyroid consequences.
RESULTS: Among the 2 million children who were living in highly contaminated regions in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, 7000 cases of thyroid cancer had occurred in 2005. This is the most significant radiation-induced consequence of the Chernobyl accident. The increased incidence of thyroid cancer observed in adult population who lived

In recent years, small-scale nuclear power plants, particularly micro nuclear reactors, have emerged as viable alternatives, gaining importance in the technical and economic operation of electrical distribution systems. As consumer demand for electricity continues to rise, the use of renewable energy sources and nuclear energy has become essential, especially as dependence on conventional energy sources grows increasingly unsustainable from an environmental standpoint. In this study, mathematical models for various Hybrid Energy Systems (HES) are developed using both single and multi-objective

Albite (NaAlSi3O8), a framework silicate of the plagioclase feldspar family and a common constituent of felsic rocks, is often present in the siliceous mineral aggregates that compose concrete. When exposed to radiation (e.g., in the form of neutrons) in nuclear power plants, the crystal structure of albite can undergo significant alterations. These alterations may degrade its chemical durability. Indeed, careful examinations of Ar+-implanted albite carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and molecular dynamics simulations show that albite's crystal structure, upon irr

Pregnant women residing in areas impacted by the Chornobyl ionizing radiation of the Rivne Province in Ukraine have persistent higher levels of incorporated cesium-137. In these areas the neural tube defects and microcephaly rates are significantly higher than in areas with lower maternal cesium-137 incorporated levels. In two Rivne counties with populations proximal to nuclear power plants the rates of neural tube defects and microcephaly are the highest in the province. The neural tube defects rates in Rivne are persistently among the highest in Europe.

Neutrino emission from nuclear reactors provides real-time insights into reactor power and fuel evolution, with potential applications in monitoring and nuclear safeguards. Following reactor shutdown, a low-intensity flux of "residual neutrinos" persists due to the decay of long-lived fission isotopes in the partially burnt fuel remaining within the reactor cores and in spent nuclear fuel stored in nearby cooling pools. The Double Chooz experiment at the Chooz B nuclear power plant in France achieved the first quantitative measurement of this residual flux based on 17.2 days of reactor-off dat

The relationship between the reported ambient dose equivalent (H*(10)) and the individual dose rate recorded by medical staff in Fukushima City after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was evaluated, following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the east coast of Japan. Personal dose equivalent (H(p)(10)) ranged from 0.08 to 1.63 µSv h(-1) and H*(10) ranged from 0.86 to 12.34 µSv h(-1). H(p)(10) from March to July 2011 were significantly lower than H*(10). The relationships between these dose equivalents were moderately correlated. The regression equation was calculat

Thirty case histories were examined of patients who participated in liquidation of sequels of the Chernobyl disaster or inhabiting contaminated territory during the first months after the catastrophe. Of them eleven showed reactive states accompanied by psychopathological disorders. The psychotic disorders in these subjects were simple and concrete by their clinical course, developed mainly during the first 2-4 months after the disaster when the stressogeneity was maximal. This conclusion is confirmed by the fact that of 148 persons subjected to radiation effects and treated at a Kiev Mental h

Radioimmunoassay revealed in participants of Chernobyl disaster sequelae preclinical changes of some hormonal functions: moderate increase of the basal concentration of blood insulin, somatotropin, C-peptide against the background of persistent hypercortisolemia. Increase of the level of "hyperglycemic" hormones (cortisol, somatotropin, C-peptide) is explained by adaptative and compensatory reactions of the body in response to lesioning effects of ionizing radiation and other negative factors of the Chernobyl accident. Relative hyperinsulinemia is, apparently, compensating the total hyperglyce

Global nuclear power capacity is expanding rapidly, with most facilities located along coastlines. Tritiated water (HTO) is a significant radioactive byproduct of nuclear power plants and is routinely discharged into the oceans. Despite widespread release, radioecological impacts of HTO on marine zooplankton remain poorly understood. Of particular concern are jellyfish, which are composed of >95% water and distributed throughout the oceans, potentially rendering them highly susceptible to tritium bioaccumulation. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of HTO bioaccumulation, or

Self-evacuation by a private vehicle is one of the most commonly used methods of public evacuation in the case of a nuclear accident. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the dose-reduction effects of vehicles. To achieve this aim, a model for calculating the dose reduction factor was developed based on the actual shape and weight of Japanese vehicles. This factor is defined as the ratio of dose rate inside a vehicle to that outside. The model was developed based on weight of vehicle to take into account the dose-reduction effects due to not only the steel plate of the vehicle body but also th

437 nuclear power plants are in operation at present around the world to meet increasing energy demands. Unfortunately, five major nuclear accidents have occurred in the past--ie, at Kyshtym (Russia [then USSR], 1957), Windscale Piles (UK, 1957), Three Mile Island (USA, 1979), Chernobyl (Ukraine [then USSR], 1986), and Fukushima (Japan, 2011). The effects of these accidents on individuals and societies are diverse and enduring. Accumulated evidence about radiation health effects on atomic bomb survivors and other radiation-exposed people has formed the basis for national and international regu

We present a complete calculation of radiative corrections to the inverse beta decay reaction, ν[over ¯]_{e}+p→e^{+}+n, at reactor antineutrino energies using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our analysis consistently incorporates quantum electrodynamics, chromodynamics, and electroweak contributions for the first time within this framework. We provide updated, high-precision cross-section predictions with a full error budget and present the positron energy spectrum, including radiative effects. The results are essential for normalizing the reactor antineutrino flux, determining neutri

On April 26, 1986, Reactor Number 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Exposed children contracted papillary thyroid carcinoma at elevated rates, and on the eve of the 40-year anniversary, many studies are now focused on the transgenerational health effects of the disaster.

On April 26, 1986, a serious reactor accident occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A total radioactivity of 2 x 10(18) becquerel, i.e. 3.5% of the reactor inventory were released spreading throughout Europe. Radioactive tracers were iodine 131 (with a half-life of 8 days) and caesium 137 (with a half-life of 30 years). Measurements made in Magdeburg by the Institute of Hygiene on May 5th after a heavy thunderstorm indicated a considerable radioactive contamination. Measurements revealed 75,000 bq/kg in grasses, 44,000 bq/litre in storm water and 40,000 bq/kg in garden soil, however,

The United States and Canada share an interconnected electricity system where cross-border trade lowers costs, supports low-carbon generation and balances supply and demand during stress. Tariff disputes risk costlier or curtailed electricity imports, yet the system-wide consequences remain unclear. Here we show, using ten years of New York electricity-market data and power-system simulations, that tariffs on Canadian electricity reduce imports, raise prices, lower economic welfare and increase carbon emissions by replacing hydropower- and nuclear-rich imports with fossil-fuel generation. Stable iodine isotopes are essential for humans as they are necessary for producing thyroid gland hormones. However, there are hazardous radioactive iodine isotopes that are emitted into the environment through radioactive waste generated by nuclear power plants, nuclear weapon tests, and medical practice. Due to the biophilic character of iodine radionuclides and their enormous biomagnification potential, their elimination from contaminated environments is essential to prevent the spread of radioactive pollution in ecosystems. Since microorganisms play a vital role in controlling iodine cycli

The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in Ukraine exposed millions of people in the region to ionizing radiation, leading to an increased rate of papillary thyroid cancer. Researchers have taken an in-depth look at the molecular profile of these cancers-revealing, among other things, the presence of DNA double-strand breaks that correlate with greater and earlier exposure to radiation.

In the 30 years since the Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster, there is evidence of persistent levels of incorporated ionizing radiation in adults, children and pregnant women in the surrounding area. Measured levels of Cesium-137 vary by region, and may be influenced by dietary and water sources as well as proximity to nuclear power plants. Since 2000, comprehensive, population-based birth defects monitoring has been performed in selected regions of Ukraine to evaluate trends and to generate hypotheses regarding potential causes of unexplained variations in defect rates. Significantly high

Radionuclide contamination in terrestrial ecosystems has reached a dangerous level. The major artificial radionuclide present in the environment is (137)Cs, which is released as a result of weapon production related to atomic projects, accidental explosions of nuclear power plants and other sources, such as reactors, evaporation ponds, liquid storage tanks, and burial grounds. The release of potentially hazardous radionuclides (radiocesium) in recent years has provided the opportunity to conduct multidisciplinary studies on their fate and transport. Radiocesium's high fission yield and ease of

Zr(IV) together with U(IV) are the major components of high-level radionuclide waste (HLRW) and spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from nuclear power plants. Thus, their retention in the waste disposal is of great importance for the environmental risk control. Here, the influence of clay minerals on the retention of Zr(IV), as component of the nuclear waste and as chemical analogues of U(IV), has been evaluated. Three clay minerals, two bentonites and one saponite, were hydrothermally treated with three zirconium salts. A structural study at long-range order by X-ray diffraction and short-range order by
