Continence promotion in health education and community outreach programmes.

Incontinence is a highly stigmatised condition that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, yet few people seek proper assessment and treatment. Therefore, outreach events aimed at specific or general patient groups can play a crucial role in creating awareness of the condition. This article discusses some of the principles behind health promotion and outreach activities, and the importance of health literacy. It suggests some questions to consider when planning outreach activities and ideas of possible events. Two case studies from the authors' community service have been in

Nurse Advocacy Efforts to Address Climate and Environmental Justice.

Climate change is a public health crisis that disproportionately harms marginalized, frontline, and fenceline communities, deepening long-standing health inequities. This article examines nursing's critical role in advancing climate and environmental justice, drawing on the profession's history, ethical mandate, and trusted position in society. Using the Social-Ecological Model, it illustrates how nurses can advocate for equitable, climate-informed care across individual, interpersonal, community, organizational, and policy levels. The article argues that integrating climate justice into nursi

Increased Nursing Participation in Multidisciplinary Rounds to Enhance Communication, Patient Safety, and Parent Satisfaction.

Effective communication among health care team members is a mainstay of patient safety, especially in a neonatal ICU (NICU), given small errors can have serious and life-threating consequences. Ineffective communication with families of hospitalized children can lead to decreased satisfaction and trust in the health care team. To enhance communication, the NICU nursing staff at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center spearheaded an initiative to create an enhanced nursing role in multidisciplinary patient rounds. Education of the nursing staff and other team members and the development of a roundi

Impact of death education on end-of-life care practice competency among pediatric nurses: A latent profile analysis based on the health ecological model.

PURPOSE: This study identified latent end-of-life care competency classes among pediatric nurses and evaluated influencing factors using a health-ecological framework. DESIGN AND METHODS: This multi-center, cross-sectional survey conveniently sampled 348 pediatric nurses from four Chinese hospitals to evaluate end-of-life care competency. Assessments included a health-ecological general questionnaire and the Palliative Care Self-Reported Practices Scale, focusing on terminal-phase competencies. Latent profile analysis categorized participants, and multinomial logistic regression identified pr

Patterns and Predictors of Transitions Across Residential Care Settings and Nursing Homes Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older adults prefer to age in place, but sociodemographic, health, and socioeconomic factors may influence their decision to remain in the community. Guided by Andersen's behavioral model, we characterize incident transitions out of the community into residential care settings or nursing homes and identify predictors of these transitions. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Study participants include 2,725 (weighted n = 13,704,390) community-dwelling U.S. older adults of the National Health and Aging Trends Study from 2011 to 2018. We examined the associations between soci

Management of long-term conditions and dementia: The role of the Admiral Nurse.

As life expectancy increases so people often develop a range of conditions and disabilities in the years before death. Multimorbidity represents the most common 'disease pattern' found among the elderly and is characterised by complex interactions of co-existing diseases where a medical approach focused on a single disease does not suffice. People with dementia who also have other comorbidities do not always have their comorbid conditions managed as those without dementia which often lead to a high number of hospital admissions with longer lengths of stay and greater treatment costs. This case

Nurses leading the fight against Ebola virus disease.

The current Ebola crisis has sparked worldwide reaction of panic and disbelief in its wake as it decimated communities in West Africa, particularly in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, including its health care workers. This article affirms the crucial role nurses play in maintaining health and preventing diseases, connects the devastating havoc of the Ebola virus disease to another issue of nursing shortage in underdeveloped countries, and asserts the key leadership nurses play in protecting the communities they serve while maintaining their safety and those of other health care workers. Recognising and managing atrial fibrillation in the community.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and has greater prevalence in the increasing ageing population, with an estimated 10% of those over 80 years having AF. Symptoms associated with AF include palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath and fatigue. Those presenting with these symptoms need to be investigated and the appropriate treatment should be initiated if AF is detected. For those with AF, there is a significant risk of stroke if patients are not adequately anti-coagulated. This article outlines methods for detecting AF in the community and provides an overview

Detecting abuse against women in the home.

Assault is the single major cause of injury to women. Between 1.8 and 4.0 million American women are abused in their homes each year. The perpetrator of domestic violence is usually male (95%), the victim usually female. Most domestic violence is a result of the learning and reinforcement of a power imbalance between partners. Home care providers are in a prime position to detect actual or potential abuse against women, but the dynamics of abuse often produce an artificial home atmosphere, with the occupants ill at ease with the home care provider. This makes detection more difficult. Although

Linking women to health and wellness: Street Outreach takes a population health approach.

In a small city (population 86,000) situated in the Interior Health Authority, one of six health authorities in British Columbia, Canada, a local Public Health Street Outreach program was challenged with addressing the increasing complexities of individuals and families affected by substance use, poverty, mental illness, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and homelessness. The individual health service delivery model currently used to provide care in the community, limited and impeded prevention and health promotion activities by nurses working with these populations.

Community nurses' judgement for the management of venous leg ulceration: a judgement analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nurses caring for the large numbers of people with leg ulceration play a key role in promoting quality in health via their diagnostic and treatment clinical judgements. In the UK, audit evidence suggests that the quality of these judgements is often sub optimal. Misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment choices are likely to affect healing rates, patients' quality of life, patient safety and healthcare costs. OBJECTIVES: To explore the diagnostic judgements and treatment choices of UK community nurses managing venous leg ulceration. DESIGN: A judgement analysis based on Brunswik's psy

A scoping review of rural mental health and substance use nursing.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, nearly 50% of the population live in rural areas, while just 36% of nurses serve in these locations. Rural nurses face distinct challenges such as limited resources and geographical isolation, and often work with an expanded scope of practice that includes mental health and substance use (MHSU) care. The extent to which rural nurses engage in MHSU care, care barriers, and facilitators has not been previously well described. Thus, this scoping review explored the international research on rural MHSU nursing. The aim was to synthesize the rural MHSU nursing evidence and c
