Rationale and development of an e-health application to deliver patient-centered care during treatment for recently diagnosed multiple myeloma patients: pilot study of the MM E-coach.

BACKGROUND: Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) increasingly face complicated treatment regimens. E-health may support patients and healthcare providers in enhancing a patient-centered healthcare approach. Therefore, we aimed to develop a patient-centered multi-modality e-health application, to assess the application for usability and end-user experiences. METHODS: The application was developed following an iterative "action-based" methodology using the design thinking approach. Key end users participated, and relevant stakeholders were consulted in the development process. First, the care pa

The Effects of Light Therapy on Cognitive Function and Stress in Women With Breast Cancer Before Systemic Treatment.

BackgroundCancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), for example, impairments in reaction time, processing speed, memory and executive function, may be associated with breast cancer (BC) surgery which can disrupt biological and psychological stress markers. Evidence suggests that light therapy may ameliorate cognitive impairment and stress. In this double-blind, randomized controlled trial, we investigated the efficacy of light therapy on mitigating the impact of BC surgery on CRCI in a national Icelandic cohort of women with BC.MethodsParticipants were randomly allocated to receive circadian

Effects of web-based interventions on cancer caregivers’ burden and quality of life: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract Objectives As cancer incidence and survival rates rise, caregivers responsible for providing diverse support face increased burden and reduced quality of life (QoL). Although research on web-based interventions for this group is expanding, the impact of these interventions on caregiver burden and QoL remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of web-based interventions on the caregiver burden and QoL of caregivers of patients with cancer. Methods Searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO from database inception t

Awareness among patient at risk of developing Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) - A primary prevention strategy.

UNLABELLED: The quality of life, in itself, in cancer patients or in osteoporotic individuals, without even considering the side effects of the medication in the first place, has a considerable negative impact on the clinical outcome. The Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ), in the maxillofacial region, although rare, needs to be addressed with the prime importance. One of the key components of any given preventive treatment strategy is to, create awareness about the medication related unwanted effects, among health care professionals and patients. OBJECTIVE: This study is aim

Online education for rare genetic diseases: a systematic review.

IntroductionRare genetic diseases are, collectively, not in fact rare. However, educational opportunities focused on rare genetic disease can be limited. The Internet has increased the availability of education related to rare genetic disease and is accessible to a diverse range of people who seek out such information, including healthcare professionals, researchers, students, patients, and the public.PurposeTo assess the potential educational outreach of the Internet, this systematic literature review will appraise the landscape of what education for rare genetic disease is available online,

Frail older adults' challenges in using telehealth services: A scoping review.

ObjectiveTelehealth is increasingly used to expand access to healthcare, but rapid digitalization risks exacerbating exclusion among frail older adults, who often face intersecting limitations related to health, resources, and digital competence. As this group frequently has complex care needs, mapping their experiences is essential to ensure equitable access to digital care. The aim was to map the challenges frail older adults experience when using telehealth services.MethodsThis scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Patient-Caregiver Portal System in Palliative Oncology: Assessment of Usability and Perceived Benefit.

BackgroundThe engagement of family caregivers in oncology is not universal or systematic.ObjectiveWe implemented a process intervention (ie, patient-caregiver portal system) with an existing patient portal system to (1) allow a patient to specify their caregiver and communication preferences with that caregiver, (2) connect the caregiver to a unique caregiver-specific portal page to indicate their needs, and (3) provide an electronic notification of the dyad's responses to the care team to inform clinicians and connect the caregiver to resources as needed.MethodsWe assessed usability and satis

"Let him die. He caused it": A qualitative study on cancer stigma in Tanzania.

Cancer stigma presents a critical barrier to care seeking, contributing to delayed presentation and poor cancer outcomes worldwide. The burden of cancer in Tanzania is on the rise, with cancer being the third-leading cause of death in the country. Despite rising incidence and poor outcomes of cancer, cancer-related stigma interventions have received low prioritization. There is a need for sound research that focuses on understanding attitudes driving stigma, its impact on care-seeking and treatment adherence, and intervention models to reduce stigma. We used a cross-sectional qualitative study

Computational identification of salient cancer care topics and themes in oncology social work notes.

BackgroundSocial work notes provide a multifaceted narrative of a patient's cancer journey. Topic modeling is a computational technique that can be used to organize notes into thematic clusters and study topics in oncological social work at scale. In this study, we used the BERTopic framework to perform topic modeling of cancer social work notes and identify roles and themes frequently documented in oncological social work.MethodsWe collected 106 676 social work notes from 25 341 patients diagnosed with cancer at the University of California San Francisco. Notes were split at the sentence leve

Client preferences in noncommunicable diseases management in Australia: A scoping review.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCD) are the leading causes of mortality in Australia. Understanding clients' preferences is essential to implement effective care models that revitalize utilization of services. This study aims to review existing evidence on client preferences of service delivery among people with NCD in Australia. We followed PRISMA extension for scoping review. Articles conducted with discrete choice experiment were included. Clients with NCD in general or one of the five major diseases: cardiac diseases, diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and mental health disorders.

BACKGROUND: CMV infection is a common complication in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We investigated the association of clinically significant CMV (CS-CMV) infection with clinical outcomes and healthcare resource utilization in allogeneic HSCT patients in Finland. METHODS: This retrospective study included adult patients who received their first allogeneic HSCT between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2018, at the Turku University Hospital. Data were collected from the hospital data lake. Clinical and healthcare outcomes were investigated at one year and mortality
