Auriculotemporal nerve syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Auriculotemporal nerve syndrome is characterized by erythema, perspiration, heat and pain localized in the area supplied by the auriculotemporal nerve in response to gustatory stimuli after the ingestion of different types of food. This syndrome may be confused with food allergy. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old woman complained of erythema, sweat and heat in the right cheek after intake of several foods such as chocolate, fruits, and nuts for the previous 8 months. She had fractured her jaw two years previously. METHODS: Skin prick tests were performed with a standard battery of com

Impact of native, heat-processed and encapsulated hazelnuts on the allergic response in hazelnut-allergic patients.

BACKGROUND: Pollen-associated food allergy is common. However, systemic reactions or even life-threatening anaphylaxis are rare. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical impact of native, heat-processed and encapsulated hazelnuts (HN) in patients with proven HN allergy. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-two patients with a positive history of HN allergy were recruited. Sensitization was confirmed by a skin prick test (SPT) and sIgE against HN. After an HN-free diet, double-blind placebo-controlled challenges were performed with increasing amounts of native and roasted H

Food allergy and intolerance in children and adolescents, an update.

Epidemiological surveys demonstrate that rapid increase in allergic diseases is a real phenomenon. In developed countries they are about the commonest chronic diseases, reaching between 15% and 30% of the population. Adverse reaction to food can be divided into toxic reaction and non-toxic reactions. The non-toxic reactions are divided into non-immune mediated and immune mediated, these are considered food allergic reactions. We showed our experience in a 4 y survey, individualized by food allergens during the first two years of life. In Spain egg white protein is the most common allergen foll

Birch Pollen Related Pear Allergy: A Single-Blind Oral Challenge TRIAL with 2 Pear Cultivars.

Approximately 70% of birch pollen allergic patients in Europe experience hypersensitivity reactions to Immunoglobulin E (IgE) cross-reactive food sources. This so-called pollen-food syndrome (PFS) is defined by allergic symptoms elicited promptly by the ingestion of fruits, nuts, or vegetables in these patients. So far, in the literature, less attention has been given to Bet v 1 cross-reactive symptoms caused by pear (Pyrus communis). In the Netherlands, pears are widely consumed. The primary objective of this study was to measure the type and severity of allergic symptoms during pear challeng

LTP Allergy Follow-Up Study: Development of Allergy to New Plant Foods 10 Years Later.

INTRODUCTION: Allergy to nonspecific lipid transfer protein (nsLTP) is the main cause of plant-food allergy in Spain. nsLTPs are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and have high cross-reactivity but extremely variable clinical expression. Little is known about the natural evolution of this allergy, which complicates management. The objective of this study was to assess the development of allergy to new plant foods in nsLTP-sensitized patients 10 years after diagnosis. METHODS: One hundred fifty-one patients showing specific IgE to nsLTP determined by ISAC (Thermofisher) were included. Af

Allergenicity assessment of Buchanania lanzan protein extract in Balb/c mice.

Tree nuts are among "Big Eight" and have been reported globally for causing allergy. Buchanania lanzan (Bl) is one of the major tree nuts consumed by Indian population. However, very little is known about B. lanzan's induced allergic manifestation. Therefore, evaluation of it's allergenic potential was undertaken. Bl-crude protein extract sensitized BALB/c mice sera were used to identify the allergic proteins by it's IgE binding capability. The major IgE binding proteins found with molecular weight of 11, 20, 23, 25, 48, 54, and 65 kDa. Specific IgE, specific IgG1, MCPT-1, PGD2 and histamine w

Cloning, expression, characterization, and computational approach for cross-reactivity prediction of manganese superoxide dismutase allergen from pistachio nut.

BACKGROUND: Tree nut allergy is one of the common potentially life-threatening food allergies in children and adults. Recombinant food allergens offer new perspectives to solve problems of clinical and molecular allergology in diagnosis, research, and therapy of food allergies. So far, superoxide dismutase (s) has been identified as a panallergen and studied in different allergenic sources. Manganese Superoxide Dismutase (MnSOD) has also been reported in pistachio that may cause allergic reactions in atopic subjects. The aim of this study was to describe the cloning, expression, and purificati

Functional analysis of cross-reactive immunoglobulin E antibodies: peanut-specific immunoglobulin E sensitizes basophils to tree nut allergens.

BACKGROUND: Peanut and tree nuts are a major cause of food-induced anaphylaxis with an appreciable mortality. Co-sensitization to peanuts and tree nuts is a common clinical observation and may be because of peanut-specific serum IgE antibodies that cross-react with tree nut allergens. It is, however, unclear whether these cross-reactive IgE antibodies are involved in effector-cell activation. OBJECTIVE: To determine if cross-reactivity of peanut-specific IgE antibodies with tree nuts can cause effector cell activation using an in vitro basophil activation assay. METHODS: Two peanut allergic

Class I chitinases as potential panallergens involved in the latex-fruit syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Latex-fruit cross-sensitization has been fully demonstrated. However, the antigens responsible for this "latex-fruit syndrome" have not been identified. We have recently shown that class I chitinases are relevant chestnut and avocado allergens. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the in vivo and in vitro reactions of purified chestnut and avocado chitinases in relation to the latex-fruit syndrome. METHODS: From a latex-allergic population, eighteen patients allergic to chestnut, avocado, or both were selected. Skin prick tests (SPTs) were performed with crude chestnut and avocado ex

[Current childhood food allergies].

Changes of dietary habits, new food technology, international meals and increasing consumption of exotic food has changed the repartition of food allergens. Some food allergens are worrisome and symptoms severe (peanut and nut butters). Others are new and increase strongly: exotic fruits, sesame, mustard and lupin. Primary prevention include avoidance of such food in high risk infants. Product labeling must be improved.
