Overview of modifiers of methylmercury neurotoxicity: chemicals, nutrients, and the social environment.

It has been known for decades that methylmercury is a potent neurotoxicant, and that the developing brain is more susceptible to impairment as a result of methylmercury exposure than is the adult. Exposure to methylmercury is exclusively through consumption of fish and marine mammals. In recent years, the potential for protection against methylmercury toxicity by nutrients present in fish, particularly omega-3 fatty acids and selenium, has been explored in both epidemiological and experimental studies. There is evidence from several studies that fish consumption per se and methylmercury body b

A process to prepare a synthetic filter material containing nutrients for biofiltration.

In this study, an optimal process to prepare a synthetic filter material (poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/peat/KNO(3) composite bead) containing nutrients was developed for biofiltration. The optimal preparing condition was that each of the peat and PVA aqueous solutions contains 6.4 g KNO(3) and the nitrogen content in the boric and phosphate aqueous solutions must retain higher than 3.94 and 1.52 g N/l, respectively. The equilibrium amount of water-soluble nitrogen dissolved out of the prepared composite bead was between 7.95 and 8.21mg N/g dry solid. The path of water-soluble nitrogen dissolving

A case of early renal functional impairment resolved with nutrients and botanicals.

The use of three herbal/nutritional products over a period of two months normalized blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, and creatinine clearance in a case of early functional kidney impairment. Although previous use of intravenous EDTA resolved Raynaud's syndrome symptoms, it provided little improvement to abnormal creatinine clearance.

Dietary intake of various nutrients in older patients with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anorexia, nausea and premature satiety with eating, prevalent in congestive heart failure (CHF), have been held responsible for reduced dietary intake and deficiency of magnesium, potassium and probably other nutrients. Since solid data is not available, this study was undertaken with the following aims (1) to assess dietary intake in CHF, (2) to compare dietary intake in older CHF patients with a similar patient population free of CHF (control group), and (3) to evaluate these data in patients with moderate versus severe CHF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Dietary intake of 57 con

Effects of luminal nutrients and small bowel transplants on congenital indirect hyperbilirubinemia.

The Gunn rat is an excellent model of Crigler-Najjar syndrome, type 1. In previous studies we demonstrated that heterotopic 15-20-cm jejunal transplants from Wistar rats lowered serum bilirubin levels by 40%, and the reduction was transient (6 weeks). In contrast, orthotopic transplants decreased bilirubin levels by 60% and the effect persisted throughout the 8-week study. This study was initiated to identify the luminal substance(s) which are responsible for the persistent bilirubin-lowering effect of jejunal transplants. Thirty-one Wistar to Gunn 15-20-cm jejunal transplants were randomized

Hydroponic potato production on nutrients derived from anaerobically-processed potato plant residues.

Bioregenerative methods are being developed for recycling plant minerals from harvested inedible biomass as part of NASA's Advanced Life Support (ALS) research. Anaerobic processing produces secondary metabolites, a food source for yeast production, while providing a source of water soluble nutrients for plant growth. Since NH4-N is the nitrogen product, processing the effluent through a nitrification reactor was used to convert this to NO3-N, a more acceptable form for plants. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Norland plants were used to test the effects of anaerobically-produced effluent aft

Serologic precursors of cancer. I. Prediagnostic serum nutrients and colon cancer risk.

A study was undertaken to determine whether prediagnostic serum levels of retinol, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium are lower in colon cancer cases compared with matched, population-based controls. Sera were available from 25,802 participants of a serum collection campaign conducted in Washington County, Maryland in 1974. The authors identified from these participants 72 white colon cancer cases, who were first diagnosed with colon cancer during 1975-1983, and 143 white, living, cancer-free controls, matched to cases on the basis of age, sex, month of serum collection, and enumeration in

Nutrition of elderly men living alone. I. Intakes of energy and nutrients.

The energy and nutrient intakes of 35 men aged 70 years and over, living alone at home, were studied using five-day records. The mean energy intake was 1628 (SD 545) kcal/day. Protein and calcium intakes were generally adequate, but 60% of the old men took less than 10mg of iron per day. Intakes of vitamin C were below 15 mg/day in 34%. Thirty-four percent took less than 0.8 mg thiamine daily. Intakes of vitamin A and riboflavin were, in general, adequate, except for a small number of subjects. It is concluded that about one-third of the men had deficient vitamin C or thiamine intakes.

Pathogenic Candida as a supplementary nutrient for dermatophytes.

BACKGROUND: Yeasts are one of the important fungi in food production. Some of them can be used as food. Pathogenic Candida is not known to be food for other organisms. This study aims to evaluate the use of pathogenic Candida as a supplement for dermatophyte growth. METHODS: Standard fungal media, Sabouraud's dextrose agar (SDA), were supplied with dead cells of three pathogenic Candida species, C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. tropicalis, for culturing of 14 isolates of dermatophytes. Dry weight was measured to determine the biomass of growing dermatophytes. RESULTS: Candida-containing medi

Vitamin A as an essential nutrient: advances in biosynthesis.

Vitamin A and its derivatives (retinoids) are essential for vision, immunity, and cellular differentiation. Microbial biosynthesis offers a sustainable alternative to chemical synthesis for producing retinoids and their precursors. This review summarizes the recent advances in metabolic engineering of microbial cell factories for enhanced production of β‑carotene, retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, and retinyl esters. Key strategies, including strengthening precursor supply, cofactor and transporter engineering, and the identification and engineering of key enzymes such as β-carotene 15,15'-oxyg

Nutrient Therapy for the Improvement of Fatigue Symptoms.

Fatigue, characterised by lack of energy, mental exhaustion and poor muscle endurance which do not recover following a period of rest, is a common characteristic symptom of several conditions and negatively impacts the quality of life of those affected. Fatigue is often a symptom of concern for people suffering from conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, and multiple sclerosis. Vitamins and minerals, playing essential roles in a variety of basic metabolic pathways that support fundamental cellular functions, may be important in mitigating physical and mental fatigue

Defects of Nutrient Signaling and Autophagy in Neurodegeneration.

Neurons are post-mitotic cells that allocate huge amounts of energy to the synthesis of new organelles and molecules, neurotransmission and to the maintenance of redox homeostasis. In neurons, autophagy is not only crucial to ensure organelle renewal but it is also essential to balance nutritional needs through the mobilization of internal energy stores. A delicate crosstalk between the pathways that sense nutritional status of the cell and the autophagic processes to recycle organelles and macronutrients is fundamental to guarantee the proper functioning of the neuron in times of energy scarc

Regulation of nutrient transport across the placenta.

Abnormal fetal growth, both growth restriction and overgrowth, is associated with perinatal complications and an increased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disease later in life. Fetal growth is dependent on nutrient availability, which in turn is related to the capacity of the placenta to transport these nutrients. The activity of a range of nutrient transporters has been reported to be decreased in placentas of growth restricted fetuses, whereas at least some studies indicate that placental nutrient transport is upregulated in fetal overgrowth. These findings suggest that changes in plac

Epidemiology of dietary nutrient intake in ESRD.

Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is one of the strongest risk factors of adverse outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease including those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who undergo maintenance dialysis treatment. One important determinant of PEW in this patient population is an inadequate amount of protein and energy intake. Compounding the problem are the many qualitative nutritional deficiencies that arise because of the altered dietary habits of dialysis patients. Many of these alterations are iatrogenically induced, and albeit well intentioned, they could induce unintended harmful
