Transmission of Babesia odocoilei in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) by Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).

Laboratory reared Ixodes scapularis proved to be an efficient vector of Babesia odocoilei Emerson and Wright between white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Transtadial survival of the babesia occurred between nymph and adult stages of the tick, and the adult stage transmitted the babesia.

Risk of exposure to ticks (Ixodidae) and the prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in ticks in Southern Poland.

The article presents the results of the first study on seasonal activity of ticks and prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in nymphs from the Silesian Province (Southern Poland). Previous studies on the prevalence of TBEV in ticks in Poland have been conducted mostly in northern and eastern regions, but none in the Silesian Province itself. The aims of this study were to analyse the seasonal variation in tick populations and compare TBEV prevalence in nymphs from different geographical locations in the Silesia. A total of 5160 questing Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected by the f

[A trial at using the systemic action of ivermectin for suppressing the vector capacity of ticks (Ixodidae) infected with the tick-borne encephalitis virus].

Adult Dermacentor marginatus hatched from nymphs infected with TBE virus and poisoned with ivermectin retain their vector abilities. Even small individuals with a 1.5-2 times lesser mass as against the reference mass contain the virus in the body in the same titers and the virions in salivary gland alveoli. Administration of an oil solution of ivermectin into the stomach of white mice, nymph feeders, in a dose surpassing threefold the dose recommended for intramuscular injection of this agent completely suppressed shedding of intact nymphs but did not suppress it in those infected. Heterogeneous Associations of Ecological Attributes with Tick-Borne Rickettsial Pathogens in a Periurban Landscape.

The variations in prevalence levels of two tick-borne rickettsial pathogens, Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia Ewingii, in a periurban environment were evaluated along with their ecological determinants. Tick life stage and sex, month of tick collection, landscape fragmentation, and ecological covariates specific to pasture and woodland sites were considered as explanatory covariates. Questing lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) were collected by flagging for an hour once every week during mid-April through mid-August in years 2013 and 2014. A total of 4357 adult and nymphal ticks (woodla

Tritrophic interactions between a fungal pathogen, a spider predator, and the blacklegged tick.

The blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis is the primary vector for the bacterium causing Lyme disease in eastern North America and for other medically important pathogens. This species is vulnerable to attack by fungal pathogens and arthropod predators, but the impacts of interactions between biocontrol agents have not been examined. The biocontrol agent Met52®, containing the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum (=M. anisopliae), controls blacklegged ticks with efficacy comparable to chemical acaricides. The brush-legged wolf spider Schizocosa ocreata is a predator of I. scapularis that

Resistance evolution to basil essential oil: how selection pressure shapes tolerance and fitness costs in Aphis craccivora.

Essential oils (EOs) are increasingly proposed as sustainable alternatives to synthetic insecticides, yet their long-term evolutionary effects remain poorly understood. This study examined how two contrasting selection regimes with basil essential oil (Ocimum basilicum; estragole-rich chemotype) selection regimes, a stepwise escalation regime (+ 15% per generation) and a repeated constant-exposure regime with stabilisation phases at F7-F8 and F14-F15, influenced tolerance evolution and associated fitness costs over 15 generations. Stepwise selection led to limited tolerance (nymphs RRF10/F0 =

[A laboratory model of the parasitic system of Lyme disease].

A laboratory model of the parasitic system of Lyme borreliosis (LB) with Ixodes persulcatus and Borrelia burgdorferi s.s. underwent 5 epizootic cycles (Cycle I transition of Borreliae by the scheme a tick-->a mouse-->a tick corresponds to the seasonal cycle). A group of 5-6 mice was inoculated with the suspension of infected nymphs by the intracutaneously route and 35-45 days later intact tick larvae or nymphs were fed on them. In the first three cycles, 40-100% of mice in a group (a total of 33 of 59) were susceptible, but 3 of 11 groups of mice were not inoculated. 20-50% of larvae and 75-92

LsS6K acts as a negative regulator of thiamethoxam tolerance in Laodelphax striatellus.

The ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K) transduces the anabolic signals from nutrients and is involved in insect development and reproduction, however, its role in the regulation of the insecticide detoxification is still unclear. In this study, LsS6K was cloned and characterized from Laodelphax striatellus. RT-qPCR analysis revealed tissue-specific expression of LsS6K with the highest expression level in the fat body, and thiamethoxam exposure significantly down-regulated the expression of LsS6K at both the mRNA and protein levels. Functional analysis using RNA interference (RNAi) showed that k

Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus infection in and transmission by the tick Amblyomma cajennense (Arachnida: Ixodidae).

To assess a possible role of ticks as the maintenance host for epizootic strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus, laboratory experiments were conducted to determine if ticks could become infected, maintain, and transmit the virus. Larval and nymphal Amblyomma cajennense (F.) and larval Dermacentor nitens Neumann ticks were exposed to epizootic VEE virus (Trinidad donkey strain) by allowing them to feed on viremic guinea pigs (strain 13). In A. cajennense, transstadial transmission was observed from larvae to nymphs and adults. Horizontal viral transmission to a mammalian hos

Studies on the development of Theileria annulata Dschunskowsky and Luhs, 1904 in the tick--Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum Koch, 1844.

The endogenous development of Theileria annulata in the vector tick--Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum has been described. Parasites within and outside the erythrocytes were seen in the gut contents of larvae and nymphs immediately after their removal from the infected cattle but not after 24 hours. Two bodies resembling the intra-erythrocytic stage of the parasite, lying close to each other were seen near the gut epithelium of a larva on the 4th day of its dropping off the infected host. Neither multiplication nor union of the parasite resulting in zygote formation in the gut of the tick, was no

Reduced abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) with exclusion of deer by electric fencing.

To assess the effect of deer exclusion on populations of Ixodes scapularis Say (formerly I. dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin) in the northeastern United States, host-seeking ticks and ticks on white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), were monitored inside and outside a wooded, residential deer exclosure (approximately 3.5 ha) in Lyme, CT, in 1991 and 1992. Another deer exclosure was added in Lyme (approximately 7.4 ha) during 1992. Additional sample sites at other residences served as secondary controls. A seven-wire, slanted, high-tensile electric deer fence was used a

[Differences in the distant transmission of the tick-borne encephalitis virus by ixodid ticks of 2 subfamilies].

Simultaneous but separate feeding of ticks on nonviremic animal (guinea pig) has shown that Amblyomminae ticks are practically unable to transmit distantly tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) to the specimens of their own subfamily and to Ixodinae as well. Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus displayed their ability as donors and recipients of TBEV (adults and nymphs) not only for their own subfamily representatives but also as donors for recipients of Amblyomminae subfamily (nymphs and adults of Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus and nymphs of Haemaphysalis). Local abundance of Ixodes scapularis in forests: Effects of environmental moisture, vegetation characteristics, and host abundance.

Ixodes scapularis is the primary vector of Lyme disease spirochetes in eastern and central North America, and local densities of this tick can affect human disease risk. We sampled larvae and nymphs from sites in Massachusetts and Wisconsin, USA, using flag/drag devices and by collecting ticks from hosts, and measured environmental variables to evaluate the environmental factors that affect local distribution and abundance of I. scapularis. Our sites were all forested areas with known I. scapularis populations. Environmental variables included those associated with weather (e.g., temperature a

The role of particular tick developmental stages in the circulation of tick-borne pathogens affecting humans in Central Europe. 2. Tick-borne encephalitis virus.

Hard-bodied ticks transmit various pathogens, such as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Babesia spp., and carry numerous other microorganisms with an unknown pathogenic potential. Among them, tick-borne encephalitis virus has great importance. In Central European conditions all developmental stages of ticks participate in the zoonotic cycle of the TBE virus. According to pathogen and tick biology, the roles of larvae, nymphs and adults are different. Larvae and nymphs of Ixodes ricinus ticks are responsible for circulation in rodents and medium sized

Ticks (Acari: Ixodida) parasitizing humans in Corum and Yozgat provinces, Turkey.

In order to identify ticks infesting humans in Corum and Yozgat provinces in Turkey, a total of 2110 ticks representing 14 species were collected on humans, between June and September 2009. Of those, 1551 (687♂, 450♀, 407 nymphs, 7 larvae) were collected from Corum and 559 (330♂, 180♀, 49 nymphs) were collected from Yozgat. The majority of ticks (n = 1121, 53.1 %) was Hyalomma marginatum. Other common ticks infesting humans were Dermacentor marginatus (n = 209, 9.9 %) and Rhipicephalus turanicus sensu lato (n = 145, 6.9 %) in the study area. In addition, a total of 386 immature Hyalomma were f

Haemaphysalis wellingtoni (Acari: Ixodidae) from the spotted wood owl (Strix seloputo) (Aves: Strigiiformes): a new tick-host record in Peninsular Malaysia.

Multiple engorged tick nymphs (n= 6) were collected from an injured spotted wood owl (Strix seloputo) in Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. Morphological identification of the nymphs revealed that the ticks were Haemaphysalis wellingtoni, based on several distinctive features: (1) internal edge of palpal article III extending far beyond the internal edge of palpal article II; and (2) four feathery and closespaced infrainternal setae. Subsequent molecular analysis of a randomly selected nymph targeting the mitochondrial 16S gene corroborated with the species identity of the tick. To date, this is f
