Cracked teeth represent a growing concern in endodontic practice, driven by biomechanical, evolutionary, and lifestyle factors. While traditionally approached as a condition requiring reactive treatment, contemporary endodontics must now shift toward prevention. This article explores the multifactorial nature of cracked teeth, including parafunctional habits, malocclusion, modern dietary patterns, and the evolutionary mismatch between human dentition and present-day lifestyles. The paper outlines key risk factors such as bruxism, malocclusion, and enamel demineralization, while also discussing

Recent innovations in technology and techniques in both surgical and orthodontic fields can be integrated, especially when treating subjects with facial asymmetry. In this article, we present a treatment method consisting of 3-dimensional computer-aided surgical and orthodontic planning, which was implemented with the orthognathic surgery-first approach. Virtual surgical planning, fabrication of surgical splints using the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing technique, and prediction of final orthodontic occlusion using virtual planning with robotically assisted customized archwi

INTRODUCTION: In cases of significantly displaced or comminuted mandible fractures, surgical guide splints can be developed to create the normal preinjury occlusion rather than placing patients in maxillomandibular fixation. Standard fracture fixation involves bending of plates intraoperatively based on surgeon-constructed dental splints which is prone to error.
METHODS: A 38-year-old male experienced a gunshot wound to the face that resulted in mandibular angle fractures bilaterally causing severely deranged occlusion and free-floating anterior mandible segment. Virtual surgical planning (VS

OBJECTIVE: The transoral approach is an elegant reliable surgical procedure that provides anterior exposure of the cranial base and the craniocervical junction. Our objective was to demonstrate the advantages of neuronavigation in planning and performing the transoral approach.
METHODS: Three patients with chordomas and one patient with rheumatoid atlantoaxial subluxation were considered for a neuronavigated transoral procedure. For image guidance, the Stryker navigation system (Stryker Instruments, Kalamazoo, MI) was used. Registration was performed with individually constructed occlusal spl

Background/Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and sleep-related bruxism affect up to 40% and 31% of adults, respectively, and their management relies on accurate diagnostic assessment of the dental arch-including tooth identification, arch-form analysis, and occlusal-plane evaluation-followed by the fabrication of full-coverage hard occlusal stabilization splints. Current digital workflows still depend on manual CAD delineation for both diagnostic segmentation and splint design, introducing inter-operator variability. This study presents a computational framework that automates the

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognosis of subluxated, luxated and root fractured teeth in children treated by removable splints, designed to stabilize mobile anterior teeth and eliminate occlusal trauma due to malocclusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 227 traumatized anterior teeth (91 subluxated, 105 luxated and 31 root fractured teeth) treated with a removable splint were observed for 3 years. The traumatized teeth were from 79 children aged between 6-12 years (mean 8 years 5 months). If a traumatized tooth was extremely mobile, a fixed splint was first made before th

Even if the relationship between condylar position and/or temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and dentofacial deformity is controversial in literature, several patients presenting malocclusion refer to pain and TMDs as the main trouble. There are also various opinions concerning the alterations or improvements of temporomandibular joint symptoms after orthognathic surgery. In agreement with the experience of Universität Würzburg, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of splint technique to reproduce centric condyle positioning in bimaxillary osteotomy surgeries for the patients

Mandibular fractures are the most common type, accounting for about 71% of facial fractures in children. The mandible is the only movable bone in the craniomaxillofacial region. The injury of the mandible has a serious impact on the functions of children's mouth opening, chewing, pronunciation, and occlusion. Therefore, the treatment of children's mandibular fractures is particularly important. Because of the characteristics of children with permanent tooth germ blocking and strong skeletal development, the treatment methods of adults cannot simply be used in children with mandibular fractures

There is currently no consensus on the best treatment for painful temporomandibular disc displacement without reduction (DDwoR), and no network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing all types of treatments for this condition has been conducted. The objective of this study was to compare and rank all treatments for DDwoR, including conservative treatments, occlusal splints, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), arthrocentesis (Arthro) alone, Arthro plus intra-articular injection (IAI) of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), Arthro plus IAI of hyaluronic acid (HA), Arthro with exer

In this clinical study, pre- and post-rehabilitation changes in intraborder mandible movements, chewing cycles, masticatory efficiencies, and borders of the chewing area of patients with unilateral muscular disorders (MD) (n = 20) or unilateral disc derangement disorders (DDD) (n = 20) of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) were observed and compared with healthy individuals with full dentition (n = 20) (48 female, 12 male; mean age: 28). The MD patients received stabilization splints and the DDD patients, anterior positioning splints for six weeks. Symptoms, such as muscle pain, TMJ pain, headac

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a multifactorial group of musculoskeletal disorders often with combined etiologies that demand different treatment plans. While pain is the most common reason why patients decide to seek help, TMD is not always painful. Pain is often described by patients as a headache, prompting patients to seek the help of neurologists, surgeons, and ultimately dentists. Due to the unique characteristics of this anatomical area, appropriate diagnostic tools are needed, as well as therapeutic regimens to alleviate and/or eliminate the pain experienced by pati

Splints, stents, and oral appliances play an important supportive role in modern prosthodontic practice, contributing to diagnosis, treatment stabilization, surgical accuracy, and functional rehabilitation. Over time, these appliances have evolved from largely empirical devices into precision-based therapeutic tools guided by biomechanical principles and digital technologies. Recent developments in computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), three-dimensional printing, and evidence-based appliance therapy have improved their accuracy, consistency, and clinical predictability. PURPOSE: To introduce the concept and use of an occlusal-based "orthognathic positioning system" (OPS) to be used during orthognathic surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OPS consists of intraoperative occlusal-based devices that transfer virtual surgical planning to the operating field for repositioning of the osteotomized dentoskeletal segments. The system uses detachable guides connected to an occlusal splint. An initial drilling guide is used to establish stable references or landmarks. These are drilled on the bone that will not be repositioned adjacent to the osteotomy line. After mobili

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal intervention studies on treatment options in temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) including self reports and salivary biomarkers of stress are rare and the exact therapeutic function of occlusal splints widely unknown.
METHODS: We examined the therapeutic effects of a Michigan splint with occlusal relevance in patients with TMD using a placebo-controlled, delayed-start design. Two intervention groups received a Michigan splint, while one of them had a placebo palatine splint for the first 3 weeks. We collected pain intensities (at rest and after five occlusal movements

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of simulated molar loss on masticatory function, with a focus on the preferred chewing side (PCS).
METHODS: Twenty-eight participants with intact dentition were enrolled. Experimental occlusal splints (OSs) were fabricated to simulate a unilateral shortened dental arch in which the molars on one side did not contact the opposing teeth. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups. In the first group, OSs with the molar region removed on the PCS (PCS removal) were tested first, followed by repaired OSs with the molar region removed on t

INTRODUCTION: Stabilisation splint therapy (SST) is one of the treatment options for patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and has strong evidence supporting its benefits. However, there is still limited scientific understanding of the unintended consequences of SST that may lead to alterations of the surrounding structures. This study aims to evaluate the available evidence regarding structural and positional changes in various anatomical regions, including the skeletal system, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), upper pharyngeal airway, hyoid bone, craniocervical alignment, dentoalveolar

Based on a comprehensive computerized literature search supplemented by a specific manual search of the literature, the present review article focuses on concrete aspects of the application of surface electromyography (EMG) for evaluation of the masticatory muscles in general and of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles in particular, and presents the current base of knowledge on the clinical relevance of surface EMG in dental applications. In the first stage of the review, publications from the year 2000 or later reporting the results of controlled clinical trials (randomized as far as a
