Occupational blast injury resulting in traumatic corneal endothelial rings.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU) are common oral inflammatory lesions. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that has effects on cellular and humoral immunities. Previous studies have shown that the high serum IL-6 levels in some RAU patients can be reduced by drug treatment. This finding suggests that IL-6 may be a useful marker in evaluating therapeutic effects of RAU. METHODS: In this study, we used a solid phase, two-site sequential chemiluminescent immunometric assay to determine the baseline serum levels of IL-6 in a group of 228 patients with RAU, erythema

Motor vehicle occupant injuries to children in crash and noncrash events.

The mechanisms and severity of nonfatal injuries to children in crash and noncrash situations were compared: 82 children (15%) were involved in noncrash events and 466 (85%) were involved in crash events. Younger children (0 to 4 years of age) were more likely to be injured in a noncrash incident. The mechanism of injury was significantly different; 45% of the children injured in a noncrash event were ejected in contrast to 5% of the children injured in a crash event. Although more severe injuries were sustained in crashes, most of the children who were ejected in a noncrash event sustained at

Cardiac injuries in aircraft occupants resulting from aircraft accidents.

The author reports that relatively frequent injuries to the thorax and to the heart are established in autopsies of aircraft fatalities. A review of 128 autopsy protocols of aircraft accident fatalities revealed 111 cases of severe contact injuries to the thorax and 98 cases of traumatic injuries to the pericardium and the heart. Accepting the fact that persons injured if traffic accidents display cardiac injuries in 25% of the cases, the number of traumatic heart lesions inflicted in persons in aircarft accidents is three times as high, a fact which may be attributed to the far higher speeds

The effect of sleeping posture on occupant injury in frontal coach crashes.

The safety of coaches in frontal crashes is attracting attention in various countries. Coach crash studies are done based on standard postures. Occupants travelling long distances in coaches may fall asleep, with postures that can be different from the standard posture. This paper investigates the effects of different sleeping postures on occupant injuries in frontal coach collisions by using sled test model and dummies. Four different sleeping postures are considered including head tilted sideway, slide down on seat in neutral position, turned torso-head diagonal with backrest and turned tors

Occupational triangular fibrocartilage complex injury in a sewing machine operator.

Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries are associated with repetitive wrist movements and have mostly been reported in athletes but not in sewing machine operators, even though their jobs involve repetitive wrist movements. Our patient had operated a sewing machine for nine years across various workplaces. Two years ago, she began experiencing lateral ulnar pain, tenderness, and mild swelling in her left wrist. She was initially evaluated by her family physician, then by an orthopaedic surgeon, and was eventually referred to an occupational medicine specialist. TFCC compression test

On scene injury severity prediction (OSISP) algorithm for car occupants.

Many victims in traffic accidents do not receive optimal care due to the fact that the severity of their injuries is not realized early on. Triage protocols are based on physiological and anatomical criteria and subsequently on mechanisms of injury in order to reduce undertriage. In this study the value of accident characteristics for field triage is evaluated by developing an on scene injury severity prediction (OSISP) algorithm using only accident characteristics that are feasible to assess at the scene of accident. A multivariate logistic regression model is constructed to assess the probab
