BMP-2 and Noggin are expressed in several tissues and participate in cell differentiation and proliferation during odontogenesis and tumor development. We evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of these proteins in ameloblastomas (AMs), odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and dentigerous cysts (DCs). The expression in AM (n.20), OKC (n.20), and DC (n.20) was evaluated by the percentage of positive cells and expression intensity, resulting in a total immunostaining score. Analysis of BMP-2 and Noggin revealed positivity in all cases. The Mann-Whitney test showed a statistically significant di

The enamel organs of subcutaneously transplanted mouse molar teeth undergo cyst formation and present a model for the study of the pathogenesis of development odontogenic cysts. Maxillary molars extracted from 10-day-old C57B1 mice were grafted subcutaneously into adult mice of the same strain. The grafts were recovered between 2 and 50 days after operation and routinely prepared for histological examination. After initial degeneration, the enamel organ took the form of a squamous epithelium in which after 5 to 6 days squamous hyperplasia took place. Cystic degeneration within the epithelium p

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is an aggressive cyst, and its recurrence rate is higher than that of other odontogenic cysts. Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is less aggressive than OKC, but bears the probability of carcinomatous changes. In this study, we evaluated the expression and intensity of P53 and TGF-alpha in order to compare the biologic behavior or probable carcinomatous changes of these two cysts. In this cross-sectional study, 15 OKC and 15 OOC were stained immunohistochemically for P53 and TGF-alpha using the Novolink polymer method. Then, all slides were examined by an opt

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant tumor of odontogenic origin, with only about 50 cases reported in the English literature so far. Histologically, it is characterized by ghost cells, dentinoid deposits, high grade malignant cellular features, and areas of necrosis and invasion. Having common histological features with other odontogenic ghost cell lesions (OGCL) like calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) and dentinogenic ghost cell tumors, it is crucial to recognize GCOC malignant features, as it can be destructive and invasive, sometimes showing distant metastases and hig

BACKGROUND: The aggressive biological behavior of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), unlike that of other odontogenic cysts, has argued for its recent re-classification as a neoplasm, 'keratocystic odontogenic tumor'. Identification of mutations in the PTCH gene in some of the OKCs that were expected to produce truncated proteins, resulting in loss of control of the cell cycle, provided additional support for OKCs having a neoplastic nature.
METHODS: We investigated the immunohistochemical expression of the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway-related proteins, PTCH, smoothened (SMO) and GLI-1

Background: Radiographic differentiation of odontogenic cysts remains challenging due to overlapping imaging features and limited specificity of conventional assessment. Radiomics offers a quantitative approach to extract imaging biomarkers that may improve non-invasive lesion characterization. Accurate differentiation among cyst subtypes is clinically relevant, as different odontogenic cysts may warrant different management and follow-up strategies. Methods: This study included 63 patients with histopathologically confirmed odontogenic cysts (odontogenic keratocyst [OKC], n = 33; radicular cy

Ki67 as a proliferation marker plays a critical role in assessing cellular activity in various pathological tissues, including cystic lesions. Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and radicular cysts (RCs) are two common types of jaw cysts that exhibit distinct biological behaviors, particularly in their proliferative patterns. OKCs are known for their aggressive nature and high recurrence rate, while RCs are typically less aggressive and exhibit lower recurrence risk. By evaluating the expression of Ki67, a nuclear protein linked to cell proliferation, researchers can gain valuable insights into th

An odontogenic cutaneous sinus tract (OCST) of dental origin is an uncommon and frequently misdiagnosed lesion that is caused by chronic periodontitis. Given that OCSTs often lack symptoms, are located on the lower face, and can have notable variations in clinical appearance, they can be mistaken for more common dermatologic diagnoses such as squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and cysts. We present 2 patients with OCSTs who were referred for cutaneous surgery for a rendered diagnosis of an SCC and epidermal cyst. A proper diagnosis was rendered after a high index of suspicion, and clinicopatholog
