Olfactory changes at threshold and suprathreshold levels following septoplasty with partial inferior turbinectomy.

Partial inferior turbinectomy with septoplasty is routinely carried out for airway obstruction. However, its effects on the sense of smell have not been systematically evaluated. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the influence of septoplasty with partial inferior turbinectomy on threshold and suprathreshold olfactory acuity. The subjects were 30 patients undergoing septoplasty including partial inferior turbinectomy. Olfactory function was determined by the "Sniffin' Sticks," which allow the assessment of odor thresholds, odor discrimination, and odor identification. The patien

Association between the rs2590498 polymorphism of Odorant Binding Protein (OBPIIa) gene and olfactory performance in healthy subjects.

Olfactory function varies by several orders of magnitude among healthy individuals, who may exhibit a reduced sensitivity (hyposmia), a high sensitivity (hyperosmia), or an olfactory blindness (anosmia). Environmental and genetic factors seem to account for this variability. Most of odorant molecules are hydrophobic and it has been suggested that odorants are transported to the olfactory receptors by means of odorant binding proteins (OBPs). Aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of a relationship between the olfactory performance of healthy subjects and the polymorphism in the odor bi

'Thermal taste' predicts higher responsiveness to chemical taste and flavor.

Individual differences in taste perception have been explained in part by variations in peripheral innervation associated with the genetic ability to taste the bitter substances PTC and PROP. In the present study we report evidence of another source of individual differences that is independent of taste stimulus, taste quality, or gustatory nerve. Individuals who perceived taste from thermal stimulation alone (thermal taste) gave significantly higher taste ratings to chemical stimuli--often by a factor of >2:1--than did individuals who perceived no taste from thermal stimulation. This was true

Biohybrid organoid-robot sensing for olfaction intelligence.

Owing to the remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the sensory modalities in artificial systems that characterize human embodiment have received significant attention. However, olfaction remains largely absent in artificial systems, primarily due to several technological challenges. In this study, we aim to advance biomimetic olfactory processing by developing a biohybrid organoid-robot (BOR) system. This system integrates an olfactory organoid-based bioelectronic nose, machine learning (ML) decoders, and an odor-triggered robotic platform. By harnessing the sensitivity and

Vomeronasal and/or olfactory mediation of ultrasonic calling and scent marking by female golden hamsters.

The role of the olfactory and vomeronasal systems in mediating odor-stimulated ultrasonic calling, flank marking, and vaginal marking by female hamsters was investigated by selective lesions of either system. Removal of the vomeronasal organ resulted in reduced frequencies of ultrasonic calling by estrous and nonestrous females in response to conspecific odors but it had no influence on either scent marking behavior during the same tests. When tested immediately after separation from a male, ultrasonic calling was not reduced by vomeronasal removal, indicating that such surgery does not cause

Prevalence and Prognostic Factors Associated with Early Recovery of Olfactory Dysfunction in COVID-19 Patients.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of smell dysfunction, along with its risk factors, has been evaluated in previous literature; however, little has been established regarding its relation to other factors such as disease severity, history of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations, and medical treatment for COVID-19 infection. These factors may impact the overall recovery of olfaction in COVID-19 patients. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the prevalence of early olfactory recovery from COVID-19 infection and its associated factors. METHODS: This study was a prospective cohort study on 34

Specific intranasal and central trigeminal electrophysiological responses in Parkinson's disease.

Olfactory dysfunction is a frequent early non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). There is evidence that with regard to trigeminal perception, PD-related olfactory dysfunction is different from other olfactory disorders. More specifically, trigeminal sensitivity, when measured behaviorally, was unimpaired in PD patients as opposed to patients with non-Parkinsonian olfactory dysfunction (NPOD). We sought to investigate the trigeminal pathway by measuring electrophysiological recordings from the nasal epithelium and EEG-derived event-related potentials in response to a specific trigeminal

Ectopic Upper Third Molar in Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The sensation of nasal patency can be induced by inhaling menthol, which predominantly produces trigeminal stimulation. It remains unclear whether olfactory stimulation can also induce or modulate the sensation of nasal patency. METHODOLOGY: A total of 118 participants (normosmia: n=67, olfactory dysfunction: n=51) were exposed to four odors in a randomized order: 1) phenylethanol (PEA), 2) menthol, 3) a mixture of PEA and menthol, 4) nearly odorless propylene glycol. The odors were presented by nasal clips. After the nasal clip had been removed, the participants rated relative na

Challenges and possible solutions for decoding extranasal olfactory receptors.

Olfactory receptors are primarily known to be expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity and therefore assist in odor perception. With the advent of high-throughput omics technologies such as tissue microarray or RNA sequencing, a large number of olfactory receptors have been reported to be expressed in the nonolfactory tissues. Although these technologies uncovered the expression of these olfactory receptors in the nonchemosensory tissues, unfortunately, they failed to reveal the information about their cell type of origin. Accurate characterization of the cell types should be

Orthonasal, but not Retronasal Olfaction Is Specifically Impaired in Parkinson's Disease.

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) appears several years before the presence of motor disturbance. Olfactory testing has the potential to serve as a tool for early detection of PD, but OD is not specific to PD as it affects up to 20% of the general population. Olfaction includes an orthonasal and a retronasal components; in some forms of OD, retronasal olfactory function is preserved. We aimed to evaluate whether combined testing components allows for discriminating between PD-related OD and non-Parkinsonian OD (NPOD). The objective of this study is to orthonasal and retron

Piriform cortex gates learned fear through a brain-spleen neuroimmune axis.

Maladaptive learned fear responses to stress underlie several debilitating neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we identify a brain-to-spleen neural pathway that mediates learned fear through coordinated neuroimmune interactions. Using a chronic acquired olfactory stress (CAOS) model, we demonstrate that sustained enhancement of the piriform cortex (Pir) excitability contributes to the transformation of stress-associated olfactory inputs into learned fear-avoidance behavior. Through comprehensive neural tracing approaches, we mapped a functional tetrasynaptic circuit (Pir→ventral hippocampus CA1

Functional expression and characterization of odorant receptors using the Semliki Forest virus system.

The human olfactory system can recognize and discriminate a large number of different odorant molecules. The detection of chemically distinct odorants starts with the binding of an odorant ligand to a specific receptor protein on the olfactory neuron cell surface. To address the problem of olfactory perception at a molecular level, we have expressed and characterized different olfactory receptors with several expression systems. Here we provide the first documentation of functional expression of odorant receptors using the Semliki Forest virus system. The human odorant OR 17-40 receptor and th

[Olfactory evoked potentials and contingent negative variation in expert assessment of disordered sense of smell].

Normally, the sense of smell is assessed by means of traditional subjective tests (sniff test, gustatory smell test, and trigeminus test). When results are inconclusive, an objective smell test is indicated. Simultaneously registering olfactory evoked potentials (OEP) and contingent negative variation (CNV) permits evaluation of both odor perception and odor discrimination. We can even objectively assess the false olfactory sensations in parosmia patients who are unable to discriminate between different odors. In this study, the results of 59 patients with olfactory disorders are presented. He

Mechanism of copper nanoparticle toxicity in rainbow trout olfactory mucosa.

Chemosensory perception is crucial for fish reproduction and survival. Direct contact of olfactory neuroepithelium to the surrounding environment makes it vulnerable to contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs), which are increasingly used in commercial and domestic applications due their exceptional properties, can impair fish olfactory function. However, the molecular events underlying olfactory toxicity of CuNPs are largely unexplored. Our results suggested that CuNPs were bioavailable to olfactory mucosal cells. Using RNA-seq, we compared the effect of CuNPs and copp

A Cross-Sectional Study of Patient Views on Acceptability of Olfactory Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Unlike other chronic conditions, effective therapies for smell and taste disorders (SATDs) remain scarce. Olfactory implants are an emerging area of therapy aimed at restoring the sense of smell through electrical stimulation of the olfactory pathway. This survey aimed to assess patient opinions and the acceptability of olfactory implants, including willingness to undergo surgery, as well as factors influencing their decision-making process. Primary Culture of the Human Olfactory Neuroepithelium and Utilization for Henipavirus Infection In Vitro.

The olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) are a unique cell type involved in the initial perception of odors. These specialized epithelial cells are located in the neuroepithelium of the nasal cavities and directly connect the nasal cavity with the central nervous system (CNS) via axons, which traverse the cribriform plate to synapse within the olfactory bulb. ORNs are derived from precursor cells that lie adjacent to the basal lamina of the olfactory epithelium. These precursor cells divide several times and their progeny differentiate into mature sensory neurons throughout life. In addition to i
