Specific anosmia, the inability to perceive a specific odor, while olfactory perception is otherwise intact, is known as a rather seldom phenomenon. By testing the prevalence of specific anosmia to 20 different odors in a sample of 1600 people, we were able to estimate the general prevalence of anosmia. This revealed that specific anosmia is not rare at all. In contrast, the general likelihood for specific anosmia approaches 1. In addition, specific anosmia can be very well reversed by "smell training" during the course of 3 months. To summarize, specific anosmia seems to be a rule, not an exc

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are increasingly recognized as metabolic byproducts of viral infection and may serve as olfactory cues detectable by trained scent dogs. This study examined whether dogs could distinguish cell culture samples infected with murine hepatitis virus strain 1 (MHV-1), a biosafety level 2 coronavirus model, from uninfected controls. Parallel chemical analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified 14 VOCs in infected and 12 in control samples. Notably, 3-heptanone and 1-nonanol were unique to infected samples, while others such as acetophenone

This paper presents a novel neural network called KIII model for pattern recognition in artificial olfaction, whose topological structure and parameters are based on anatomical and electrophysiology experiments in mammalian olfactory system. Six data sets of three volatile organic compounds in different conditions, each with a wide range of concentrations, are obtained by a signal acquisition system with tin oxide gas sensor array. They are input into KIII model for training and test. Experimental results show that the system had a good classification performance in a wide concentration range

Pheromones are chemical communication signals known to elicit stereotyped behaviours and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species, generally in relation to a specific function (e.g. mate finding in moths). However, recent research suggests that pheromones can modulate behaviours, which are not directly related to their usual function and thus potentially affect behavioural plasticity. To test this hypothesis, we studied the possible modulatory effects of pheromones on olfactory learning and memory in Agrotis ipsilon moths, which are well-established models to study sex-phe

The processing of odour information starts at the level of the olfactory glomerulus, where the mitral cell distal dendritic tuft not only receives olfactory nerve sensory input but also generates dendrodendritic output to form complicated glomerular synaptic circuits. Analysing the membrane properties and calcium signalling mechanisms in these tiny dendritic branches is crucial for understanding how the glomerular tuft transmits and processes olfactory signals. With the use of two-photon Ca2+ imaging in rat olfactory bulb slices, we found that these distal dendritic branches displayed a signif

Olfactory perception plays a fundamental role in nutrition, emotional development, and social behavior, yet olfactory disorders (OD) in children remain largely underrecognized and understudied. This mini review summarizes current evidence and proposes a structured clinical approach for the evaluation and management of pediatric OD. Etiologies are diverse, encompassing congenital syndromes such as Kallmann and CHARGE, post-infectious and post-traumatic forms, inflammatory airway diseases, and structural or iatrogenic causes. Accurate diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and comprehe

Anatomical evidence and conditioning experiments have recently suggested that magnetoreceptors are located in the upper beak of homing pigeons, where they are innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. These findings have raised the issue of whether the trigeminally mediated magnetoreception is involved in the navigational mechanisms of homing pigeons. Recent data have shown that, in inexperienced pigeons, section of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve does not impair navigational abilities, whereas the navigational performance of inexperienced pigeons is disrupted

OBJECTIVE: To validate a French version of the Olfactory Disorders Questionnaire (Fr-ODQ).
METHODS: Patients with olfactory disorder (OD) and controls were enrolled from two medical centers. Individuals completed the Fr-ODQ and the French version of the sinonasal outcome tool-22 (SNOT-22). The extended Sniffin'Sticks procedure was used to test odor Threshold, Discrimination, and Identification (TDI). Cronbach's alpha was used to measure the internal consistency of Fr-ODQ. The reliability and the external validity were evaluated through a test-retest approach and by correlating Fr-ODQ and SNOT

Although different studies have shown that diseases such as breast or lung cancer are associated with specific bodily odours, no study has yet tested the possibility that epileptic seizures may be reflected in an olfactory profile, probably because there is a large variety of seizure types. The question is whether a "seizure-odour", that would be transversal to individuals and types of seizures, exists. This would be a pre requisite for potential anticipation, either by electronic systems (e.g., e-noses) or trained dogs. The aim of the present study therefore was to test whether trained dogs,

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, characterized by persistent multi-organ symptoms post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, poses a substantial global health burden. While diverse therapeutic interventions have been proposed, their comparative efficacy remains uncertain due to fragmented evidence and methodological heterogeneity in prior studies. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to comprehensively explore the effectiveness of diverse therapeutic interventions in long COVID.
METHODS: In this meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus (EBSCO), CINAHL (EBSCO), and Re

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) often emerges in adolescence and young adulthood, yet early neural predictors remain scarce. The olfactory system, through its connections with limbic and reward circuits, may provide a novel window into compulsive alcohol use. These brain regions are altered in AUD, but the role of olfactory pathways is poorly understood. Anxiety, a common comorbidity in AUD, may further modulate these circuits. This study investigates whether anxiety moderates the relationship between olfactory-reward brain connectivity and risky alcohol use and dependence. We analysed multimodal d

An increase in synaptic AMPA receptors is hypothesized to mediate learning and memory. AMPA receptor increases have been reported in aversive learning models, although it is not clear if they are seen with memory maintenance. Here we examine AMPA receptor changes in a cAMP/PKA/CREB-dependent appetitive learning model: odor preference learning in the neonate rat. Rat pups were given a single pairing of peppermint and 2 mg/kg isoproterenol, which produces a 24-h, but not a 48-h, peppermint preference in the 7-d-old rat pup. GluA1 PKA-dependent phosphorylation peaked 10 min after the 10-min train

Synaptic responses resulting from stimulation of the main olfactory and vomeronasal (VN) nerves were measured in main and accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) of frog, Rana pipiens, to test the hypothesis that properties of these synapses would reflect the distinct differences in the time course of odour delivery to each of these olfactory structures. Paired-pulse depression dominated responses to repetitive stimulation of the main olfactory nerve for interstimulus intervals (ISI) up to several seconds. Inhibition of voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels by GABAb receptors contributes significantly to this

The present study assessed the functional consequences of peripheral olfactory destruction on the minimum detectable levels of stimulation for the odorants 2-propanol, D-limonene, and ethyl acetoacetate. Using standard operant techniques, eight Long-Evans rats were trained to criterion on an air versus odor differential response task. Odorant threshold was then determined on 10 consecutive testing sessions, using a computer-automated olfactometer and psychophysical tracking procedure. Following the last testing session, the rats were lesioned by exposing them to 330 ppm methyl bromide gas for

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is a hallmark feature of COVID-19, yet the potential for recovery with long-standing COVID-19-related smell loss (CRSL) remains uncertain, particularly when treatment is initiated years later. This study evaluated olfactory outcomes in patients with CRSL compared with non-COVID-19-related smell loss (non-CRSL), with emphasis on delayed treatment initiation.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 104 patients evaluated at a tertiary clinic between January 2023 and February 2025, comprising 47 patients with CRSL and 57 with non-CRSL. All patients com

Hunger, a state of nutrient deficiency, significantly enhances cognitive behaviors by heightening sensitivity to food-related stimuli. However, the mechanisms by which hunger influences olfactory learning remain unclear. In this study, it is shown that aversive or appetitive memory is formed faster in hungry C. elegans. These findings reveal that hunger-induced octopamine release from the interneuron RIC enhances both aversive and appetitive olfactory learning. By analyzing neural circuits downstream of RIC, two distinct pathways involved in memory formation are identified. For aversive learni
