BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases constitute a threat to humans and animals. The Middle East Region is a hotspot for such a threat; given its geographic location under migratory birds' flight paths, mass gatherings, political conflicts, and refugee crises. Thus, prioritizing zoonotic diseases of national significance is critical for preventing and controlling such threats and optimizing limited resources. Using a multi-sectoral One Health (OH) approach, this study aimed at prioritizing zoonotic diseases of national significance to Jordan and identifying future recommendations and action plans.

More than 75% of emerging infectious diseases and 60% of known human infectious diseases are transmitted from animals. Among these zoonoses, rabies is of utmost public health significance due to its lethality. The multi-faceted nature of zoonotic disease complicates control and prevention and thus, a multi-sectoral One Health Approach could be a better strategy to cope with rabies. Up until now, rabies prevention and control programs are conducted utilizing mass vaccination of domestic and community dogs and cats, and mass awareness programs. However, the burden of rabies has not been reduced

Animals, and the health systems which ensure their protection, play a vital role in the security and economic and social well-being of humanity, and are therefore a key component of the One Health concept. For global and national health security, prevention is better than cure, and targeting 'risk at source' in animal populations is a vital strategy in safeguarding the planet from risks of emerging zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Neglected zoonoses - such as rabies and brucellosis - continue to have a significant global impact on human health and are also best managed at their ani

Although often underappreciated, a number of bacterial zoonoses are endemic in Africa. Of these, brucellosis, leptospirosis, Q fever, and rickettsioses are responsible for a substantial proportion of febrile illness among patients seeking hospital care. In this paper, we discuss the aetiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these bacterial zoonoses. To prevent and control bacterial zoonoses, strategies targeting both animals and humans are crucial. These may lead to better outcomes than strategies based exclusively on treatment of human infections.

The increasing occurrence of human cysticercosis, a zoonotic neglected disease, is challenging the traditional prevention and control paradigm and calling for One Health (OH) solutions in industrialized countries. OH solutions for health interventions are increasingly being used to capture expected and unexpected outcomes across people, animals, and the environment. The Network for Evaluation of One Health (NEOH) proposes an evidence-based framework, relying on systems and mixed methods approaches to evaluate the One Health-ness. In this case study, this tool is used to evaluate the design of

The international prominence accorded the 'One Health' concept of co-ordinated activity of those involved in human and animal health is a modern incarnation of a long tradition of comparative medicine, with roots in the ancient civilizations and a golden era during the 19th century explosion of knowledge in the field of infectious disease research. Modern One Health tends to focus on zoonotic pathogens emerging from wildlife and production animal species, but one of the most significant One Health challenges is rabies for which there is a canine reservoir. This review considers the role of sma

OBJECTIVES: To map and synthesise current evidence on how lifelong biological, environmental, and social exposures, collectively conceptualised as the exposome, interact with the human oral microbiome to influence oral disease development and progression within a One Health framework.
DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published in English that examined the relationships between the exposome and the human oral microbiome. The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework, applying its five-stage methodological approach. Comprehensive searches were per

The increase in pharmaceutical residues and environmental contaminants, including heavy metals and biotoxins, in coastal ecosystems represents a critical threat to global health. Mussels (Mytilus spp.), as sessile filter feeders, serve as primary bioaccumulators and biological indicators of this chemical pressure, yet their toxicological role in human health is often underestimated. This review explores the physiological and toxicological effects of the accumulation of complex contaminants and pharmaceutical residues, specifically including veterinary drugs that reach the marine environment th

Africa harbours more than 80% of the world's dromedary camels, with a pooled MERS-CoV seroprevalence of 73·7%; however, no autochthonous outbreak in humans has been documented. In this Review, we weigh five interacting explanations for the absence of documented human outbreaks based on the strength of the evidence for each explanation. The primary explanation is virological; many, although not all, African clade C MERS-CoV strains show reduced replication competence in human respiratory tissues, and clade C strains have not become established in Arabian camels or humans despite decades of larg

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 40% of contemporary pharmaceuticals are derived from natural products and traditional knowledge sources, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) remain underrepresented in global health policy frameworks. While the One Health concept emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health, MAPs have historically been viewed mainly as passive resources rather than as dynamic biological and ecological actors. This review synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence published from 2015 to 2025 to reframe medicinal

Accelerating pressures, including climate change, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the growing burden of chronic disease, have revealed severely siloed medical and public health frameworks. One Health, a paradigm encompassing the inextricable links among human, animal, and environmental health, has emerged in response to these interconnected threats, providing a unifying framework for addressing complex health challenges through integrated, multisectoral approaches. Many One Health challenges, however, are not acute problems with clear proximate causes but delayed an

The One Health approach is based on a systemic understanding of the interrelationship between human, animal, and environmental health. In today's world, characterized by rapid urbanization, globalization, climate change, and emerging zoonoses, the One Health concept has become critical as an interdisciplinary and multisectoral framework for ensuring biosecurity and sustainable development. This paper evaluates the status and prospects for the implementation of the One Health approach in Ukraine, a nation uniquely positioned between establishing a modern public health system and managing the pr

Although toxocariasis has been considered a common and important neglected zoonotic parasitic disease worldwide, serologic ownership risk and owner-dog concomitant ophthalmic assessment remain to be fully established. Meanwhile, high toxocariasis prevalence has been recently found in seashore areas of southern Brazil. Accordingly, the present study aimed to perform owner serologic, fecal/hair dog, and owner- dog ophthalmic assessment in an endemic seashore area of southern Brazil. In overall, 112/342 (32.75%) owners were seropositive to anti-Toxocara spp. IgG antibodies by ELISA, with family i

Companion animals, particularly dogs and cats, are becoming essential members of modern households. They consistently share both indoor and outdoor spaces with their owners, resulting in a substantial overlap in living environments. Although public health concerns associated with companion animals receive considerable attention, their potential role as sentinel species remains underestimated. This role aligns with the One Health concept, which emphasizes the interconnection and mutual influence of human, animal and ecosystem health. In this review, we discuss the sentinel role of companion dog

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic disease outbreaks are a growing global health concern, highlighting the need for tools to strengthen outbreak responses. Process mapping is a systems thinking approach that allows the complex multilevel, multisectoral network of actors and processes involved in an outbreak response to be clearly visualised and analysed using a One Health lens. We applied process mapping to a rabies outbreak in the previously rabies-free Philippine province of Romblon to demonstrate its utility.
METHODS: Key stakeholders were interviewed to inform the development of a provisional map of th

Human monkeypox (Mpox) is an emerging zoonotic disease. Its clinical features are similar to but less severe than those of smallpox. The etiology of this disease is the monkeypox virus. This virus is a double-stranded DNA virus that is classified into the genus Orthopoxvirus and the family Poxviridae. Human monkeypox was first identified in 1970 and mainly occurred in Central and Western Africa. In 2022, outbreaks of Mpox virus infection occurred in several non-endemic countries and caused a potential threat to humans. It is urgent to take immediate action to control and prevent the outbreak o

INTRODUCTION: Here we reported the virological, entomological and epidemiological characteristics of the large autochthonous outbreak of dengue (DENV) occurred in a small village of the Lombardy region (Northern Italy) during summer 2023.
METHODS: After the diagnosis of the first autochthonous case on August 18, 2023, public health measures, including epidemiological investigation and vector control measures, were carried out. A serological screening for DENV antibodies detection was offered to the population. In the case of positive DENV IgM, a second sample was collected to detect DENV RNA
