Child Abuse in Iran: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to estimate the pooled prevalence of different types of child abuse in Iran. METHOD: We systematically searched four English databases (PubMed, Sciencedirect, PsychINFO and Scopus), and three Farsi databases (Magiran, IranMedex and SID) to find out relevant articles that have reported the prevalence of child abuse in Iran. Studies conducted on special samples, special setting or on adult population for history of child abuse were excluded from our study. The total number of obtained articles from English databases was 83. After removing the duplicat

The role of maltreatment risk in the interplay between maternal and child's empathy over time.

Parental empathy is associated with risk of child maltreatment which is, in turn, associated with children's negative social outcomes. Yet familial relationships are not unidirectional. We aimed to examine the interplay between maternal and child empathy over two time points, two years apart, and how these are moderated by abuse risk. Participants were N = 250 mothers of children aged 4-10 years (48.4% girls). Bivariate change score models were computed to examine the relationship between changes in maternal and child's empathy. Maternal empathic concern predicted an increase in her child's co

The handicapped child and child abuse.

For a group of children with handicaps, growth and development are also affected by abuse or neglect. Our understanding of the problems of the abused, handicapped child emerges from experience with 37 children with cerebral palsy who have been maltreated, coupled with a review of the literature in related areas. We identify the following four problems as crucial to the study of abuse and neglect to the child with handicaps: (1) abuse that causes handicaps, (2) abuse that occurs to the handicapped child, (3) compromises in care that can occur when the handicapped child becomes involved with the

Diarrhea and gallbladder hydrops in an immunocompetent child with Cryptosporidium infection.

We report a case of an immunocompetent child who developed gallbladder hydrops during a concurrent diarrheal illness caused by Cryptosporidium parvum. Hepatobiliary disease and chronic cryptosporidial diarrhea is an accepted association in adults with HIV infection but has only once previously been reported in a child, also with HIV.

Challenging the Sensitive Window Hypothesis: Timing Effects of Maternal Depressive Symptoms on the Intergenerational Transmission of Maltreatment and Psychopathology in the Next Generation.

OBJECTIVE: The current study explored the role of maternal depressive symptoms in the intergenerational transmission of childhood maltreatment and developmental psychopathology. Based on the sensitive window hypothesis, the effects of earlier versus later maternal depression symptoms on child development were analysed. METHOD: Ninety-nine mother-child dyads, 65% of which had high-risk teenage mothers, participated in a longitudinal study with three assessments in the first 18 months of the child's life (T1-T3) and a 4th reassessment (T4) at the child's preschool age. Using serial mediation an

Mothers and fathers of children and adolescents with Down syndrome experience parenting stress differently: Analysis on associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children and adolescents with intellectual disability, including Down syndrome (DS), experience higher levels of parental stress in comparison with caregivers of typically developing youths. However, existing research primarily focuses on maternal stress, with limited exploration of potential differences between mothers and fathers and the factors associated with their parental stress experience. AIMS: The current study had two aims: (i) to explore whether there are differences in parental stress levels between fathers and mothers of school-aged children with DS; (ii

Pharmacogenomics for Prader-Willi syndrome: caregiver interest and planned utilization.

Aim: The study aim was to determine caregiver interest and planned utilization of pharmacogenomic (PGx) results for their child with Prader-Willi syndrome. Methods: Caregivers consented to PGx testing for their child and completed a survey before receiving results. Results: Of all caregivers (n = 48), 93.8% were highly interested in their child's upcoming PGx results. Most (97.9%) planned to share results with their child's medical providers. However, only 47.9% of caregivers were confident providers would utilize the PGx results. Conclusion: Caregivers are interested in utilizing PGx but are

The Effects of Intimate Partner Violence on Children: Navigating Therapeutic Assessment and Intervention.

Over 5 million American children are estimated to be exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) annually. The past decade has seen a surge in research, assessment, and related interventions regarding children and violence. Contemporary practice guidelines continue to expand relative to the wide range of violence that a child might be exposed to, particularly noting that children who have experienced one type of violence, such as physical abuse, are at great risk for also experiencing other forms of violence. Effects on children exposed to IPV are potentially catastrophic and can be influenced,

Difficulty of caring for children in danger or at risk of danger in Var (a French department) by general practitioners and private pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: The exposure of children to situations of danger or risk of danger is a major public health problem. General practitioners (GPs) and pediatricians play an essential role in identification and management of these situations thanks to two procedures: the administrative procedure consists of sending an information of concern ("Information préoccupante" -IP- in French) to the departmental unit of collection, evaluation and processing of information of concern (CRIP in French) for a child at risk of danger; the judicial procedure consists of sending an alert ("signalement" in French) to

Child Abuse Management Units: How can Mental Health Services be Further Improved?

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a broad term that includes physical, sexual, and emotional (e.g., psychological, verbal) abuse. There are huge variations with regard to the level of severity and the consequences of abuse. Because child abuse is such a sensitive topic, it is a challenging task to conduct studies concerning this subject. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify areas that could be improved to offer better health care services to patients. Therefore, routine assessments, the characteristics of the cases, and the types of follow up were emphasized. METHOD: The Norwegian Minist

An effect of gene dosage on production of human chorionic somatomammotropin.

The gene deletions responsible for isolated partial deficiency of fetal human chorionic somatomammotropin (hCS) production were characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis of genomic DNA prepared from the leukocytes of an affected child. The phenotypically normal child was the product of a 38-week pregnancy characterized by peak maternal hCS levels of 1.1 micrograms/microliter (normal, 3-9.2 micrograms/ml) and normal levels of other pregnancy-associated hormones. Two genes, termed hCS-A and hCS-B, specify the same mature hCS peptide and are responsible for fetal hCS production. Digestio

Group therapy with sexually molested children.

It should be stressed that the young children's group was only a part of the overall treatment approach that forms the family context of the Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program. Because the therapists also work with entire families, they have come to accept that the child is not the only victim. Often the mothers and fathers in this program were themselves victims of sexual assaults when they were children, and have carried this victim roles with them into adulthood. A child growing up in this family system will learn the victim role well. Her denial and/or fear of sexual aggression, as well

Risk factors for active trachoma in The Gambia.

Trachoma has been endemic in The Gambia for decades but national surveys indicate that the prevalence is falling. Risk factor data can help guide trachoma control efforts. This study investigated risk factors for active trachoma and ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infection in children aged below 10 years in two Gambian regions. The overall prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was only 0.3% (3/950) compared with 10.4% (311/2990) for active trachoma, therefore analyses were only performed for active trachoma. After adjustment, increased risk of trachoma was associated with being aged 1-2 years (

Child maltreatment among U.S. Air Force parents deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom.

This study examined child maltreatment perpetration among 99,697 active-duty U.S. Air Force parents who completed a combat deployment. Using the deploying parent as the unit of analysis, we analyzed whether child maltreatment rates increased postdeployement relative to predeployment. These analyses extend previous research that used aggregate data and extend our previous work that used data from the same period but used the victim as the unit of analysis and included only deploying parents who engaged in child maltreatment. In this study, 2% (n = 1,746) of deploying parents perpetrated child m

Neighborhood Poverty, Family Economic Well-Being, and Child Maltreatment.

This study sought to understand the relationships between neighborhood poverty, family monetary well-being, and child maltreatment. The specific research questions were as follows: (1) Is neighborhood poverty at age 1 related to child physical abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect at age 5? (2) Are these relationships mediated by family monetary well-being? The study relied on data from three waves (child ages 1, 3, and 5) of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth-cohort study of 4,898 children from 20 large U.S. cities. Structural equation modeling was employed

Tough love or hostile domination? Psychological control and relational induction in cultural context.

The authors examined 2 forms of parental psychological control and how they related to child behavior problems in 2 cultural groups. A sample of 165 Hong Kong (HK) Chinese and 96 European American (EA) parents completed measures of parental control strategies, parental rejection, and child behavior problems. The use of hostile psychological control (criticism, interference, invalidation) was more strongly associated with the use of relational induction (guilt induction, shaming, reciprocity, social comparison) among EAs compared with HK parents. Psychological control was related to parental re
