Curvilinear mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) provides for multidimensional augmentation and rotation in mandibles with complex, abnormal morphology. This study aims to demonstrate cephalometric changes after curvilinear MDO.A prospectively maintained craniofacial database was queried for patients undergoing curvilinear MDO from 2009 to 2015. Demographic and operative data were collected. Cephalometric measurements were obtained from preoperative and postdistraction imaging, including sella-nasion-B point angle (SNB), mandibular plane angle (MPA), occlusal plane angle (OPA), and gonial

This case report describes the beneficial effects of the interdisciplinary treatment of an adult patient with severe skeletal periodontal problems. A 30-year-old female patient presented with anterior open bite, gummy smile, and facial asymmetry. The patient had chronic generalized severe periodontitis with pathologic maxillary anterior teeth migration and mild intellectual disability. Treatment included 6 months of periodontal treatment, followed by presurgical orthodontic treatment, a Le Fort I osteotomy with anterior segmental osteotomy, a bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy, and posts

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic condition that affects approximately 1 in every 20,000 - 50,000 live births. WBS children have specific skeletal deformities, dental malformations and rare lingual muscle dysfunction. The need for orthodontic and orthognathic therapy has arisen and has been considered a real clinical challenge even for experienced professionals, once it requires a complex and individualized treatment plan. This study reports a case of orthopedic expansion of the maxilla, in which a modified facial mask was used for protraction of the maxillary complex associated

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a Class II malocclusion with an anterior open bite. The patient, a girl 16 years of age, had a significant anteroposterior discrepancy and a high-angle tendency. Her face was convex, with competent lips. Intraorally she had an anterior open bite of 3 mm, space in the mandibular arch, and an overjet of 2 mm. High-pull headgear, anterior intermaxillary elastics, and appropriate wire bending were used to close the bite and to correct the anteroposterior dental relationship. Modification of a tongue thrust habit helped to correct this sign

Tongue thrust usually develops in the presence of anterior open bite in order to achieve anterior valve function. In the literature, tongue thrust is described both as the result and the cause of open bite. If it is an adaptation to malocclusion, then tongue posture and deglutitive tongue movements should change after treatment. In this case report, an adult who had skeletal open bite and Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular retrusion was treated surgically. The mandible was advanced in a forward and upward direction with a sagittal split osteotomy. The open bite and Class II malocclusio

Cases such as this are a real challenge to clinical orthodontists. They require patience as well as proper diagnosis and treatment planning. The orthodontist must also help the patient psychologically by treating the teeth and surrounding structures and by treating the patient as an individual. It is the feeling of both the Author and the Plastic surgeon in this case, Dr. Fernando Ortiz Monasterio, that this type of surgery would be successful in most non-pathological macroglossia cases. It appears that the sutured areas might be said to develop more dense epithelial tissue, not allowing the t

Background/Objectives: Anterior open bite (AOB) is a complex malocclusion characterized by the lack of vertical overlap between the upper and lower teeth during maximum intercuspation. It often results in functional impairments and aesthetic concerns. Traditional treatments for adult patients, including orthognathic surgery, are effective but invasive. Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) have emerged as a minimally invasive alternative. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of TADs for molar intrusion in the correction of AOB. Methods: A systemati

A satisfactory treatment of an 18-year-old lady was reported with right combination-type condylar hyperplasia (CH) in active phase. The chin severely deviated to the left, with the right gonial angle locating at a lower level. Intraorally, the lower centre line shifted to the left, the scale of which reached the width of one lower incisor. The right molar relation was mesial. Right maxillary second molar over-erupted without contact to lower teeth. There had been 2.5-mm anterior open bite (AOB) before surgery (T1) due to the tongue-spitting habit. After judging the benefits and disadvantages o

Appropriate operations in severe anterior open bite (AOB) cases are extremely complicated to perform because of the multiple surgical procedures involved, the difficulty of predicting posttreatment aesthetics, and the high relapse rate. We herein report a 16-year-old girl with skeletal Class II, severe AOB malocclusion, and crowding with short roots, and aesthetic and functional problems. Four-piece segmental Le Fort I osteotomy with horseshoe osteotomy was performed for maxillary intrusion, and bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and genioplasty were performed for mandibular advan

BACKGROUND: Non-nutritive sucking habits likely may cause occlusal changes such as anterior open bite (AOB) if they persist over extended time.
OBJECTIVES: To assess if there is self-correction of AOB after cessation of non-nutritive sucking habits in children older than 4 years old, through a systematic review.
SEARCH METHODS: Data sources included PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) databases, gray literature as Google Scholar, the database System for Information on Gray Literature in Europe (OpenGrey) and ProQuest Dissertations and Thes

BACKGROUND: Clear aligners are reported to control anterior open bites. Despite this, anterior extrusion remains difficult with aligners. Optimized extrusion attachments on incisors may facilitate anterior extrusion to correct open bite with Invisalign. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the efficacy of anterior open bite correction with Invisalign when using optimized extrusion versus conventional attachments.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. The pre- and post-treatment intraoral scans of patients with anterior open bite treated with Invisalign aligners were as

BACKGROUND: The etiology of open bite is complex, involving various genetic or environmental factors. Several treatment alternatives have been suggested for the correction of open bite, yet their long-term effectiveness remains controversial.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term effectiveness of open-bite treatment in treated with non-surgical approaches versus untreated patients, through lateral cephalometric radiographs.
SEARCH METHODS: Unrestricted search of 16 electronic databases and manual searches up to November 2022.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of skeletal Class II and anterior open bite patients who received simultaneous Le fort I osteotomies with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prostheses or bimaxillary orthognathic surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with condylar resorption (CR) were treated by TMJ prostheses and orthognathic surgery and divided into two groups. Cephalometric radiographs were obtained before and after operation to find out the surgical alteration by comparing measures at different time points.
RESULTS: 23 patients were included. Mean overbite of

In open bite cases, a comprehensive diagnostic differentiation is crucial in determining the best corrective therapy. In non-surgical open bite treatment, fixed appliances, either labial or lingual, are usually employed. With the addition of extra-radicular screws, more sophisticated orthodontic movements may now be performed without the necessity for orthognathic surgery. Clear aligner therapy, on the contrary, has grown in popularity as a treatment option for more complex cases, such as open bite malocclusions. This article discusses three cases with an anterior open bite that were treated u

Long-term, fixed-point posttreatment observation of orthodontically treated patients provided us with the opportunity to capture the onset, development, and improvement of open bite, a type of malocclusion. Based on the chronological sequence of events, i.e., a tendency for open bite to worsen with increasing aripiprazole dosage and to improve with decreasing dosage, it was inferred that the onset of malocclusion was caused by extrapyramidal symptoms related to aripiprazole dosage. Physicians should be aware of this side effect when prescribing aripiprazole to children and adolescents. Careful

Anterior open bite (AOB) is the insufficient vertical overlapping between the maxillary and mandibular anteriors when the teeth are in centric occlusion. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of AOB in children and adolescents who visited a private dental hospital. In this study, subjects aged between 16 and 18 years with AOB were included. Data about orthodontic examination of patients were taken from preentered dental records of the hospital. Data of patients with AOB regarding age, gender, and intraoral and extraoral features were collected from the case records of the s

This 2-year-follow up study compared and evaluated the stability of early anterior open bite (AOB) treatment based on different appliances. Children from 7 to 10 years with Angle Class I, AOB larger than 1.0 mm and fully erupted maxillary and mandibular permanent central incisors were eligible. The initial sample was 99 patients distributed, by simple randomization, into four groups: BS (bonded spurs), CC (chincup), FPC (fixed palatal crib) and RPC (removable palatal crib). Cephalometric analysis was performed at baseline (T1), final (T2) and 2-year post-treatment (T3) by taking the overbite m
