Evoked potentials in albinos: efficacy of pattern stimuli in detecting misrouted optic fibers.

Misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections associated with retinal hypopigmentation has been found to be a general phenomenon in mammals, including humans. Anomalous optic pathway projections of albinos may be detected by recording visually evoked potentials (VEPs). To determine the efficacy of various stimulus conditions for detecting misrouted optic fibers, we compared flash, modulated light, pattern reversal and pattern onset/offset (appearance/disappearance) stimuli. Pattern onset/offset were found superior in detecting anomalies of misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections. As

Single-fiber reflectance spectroscopy system using unmodified clinical laser fibers for tissue optical property recovery for photodynamic therapy treatment planning.

SIGNIFICANCE: Estimation of tissue optical properties in workflow- and resource-constrained clinical settings is required to support photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment planning, yet large-scale clinical translation remains limited by spectroscopy probe cost, complexity, and the need for probe-specific inverse models. Single-fiber reflectance (SFR) spectroscopy offers a simple and low-cost option, but previous implementations relied on customized angle-polished fibers. AIM: The objective was to develop a proof-of-concept SFR spectroscopy system employing an unmodified, United States Food and

Flexible PEGDA-gelatin hydrogel for optical fibers with enhanced electromechanical properties and initial insights into antimicrobial activity and light transmission.

This study presents optical fibers made of PEGDA-gelatin hydrogels (PG hydrogels) for biomedical and optoelectronic applications, with a focus on flexibility, biocompatibility and performance. These fibers, produced by UV polymerization, have a uniform, coreless structure with adjustable mechanical and optical properties. Among the formulations, PG4 (a PEGDA-to-gelatin ratio of 1:2) showed the best balance between conductivity, stretchability, and transparency due to its stronger cross-linking. Mechanical tests confirmed the flexibility and stability of the material under repeated deformation

High-linearity terahertz FMCW generation using two-chirped optical tone photomixing in a self-delayed fiber-optic system.

Terahertz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (THz-FMCW) radar has attracted significant attention due to its unique advantages in high-precision sensing and imaging, offering broad prospects for practical applications. However, the nonlinearity of FMCW chirp signals can introduce multiple frequency components, thereby degrading the detection capability of the system. In this work, we propose a two-chirped optical tone photomixing method to address this issue. Without introducing any additional hardware-based linearization components or software-based pre-compensation algorithms, the proposed

170-W picosecond optical vortex beam amplification in an all-fiber MOPA system.

We report the generation of high-average-output-power picosecond-pulsed optical vortex beams from an all-fiberized Yb-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. A home-made broadband long-period fiber grating is employed as an in-line mode converter prior to the final power amplifier stage to efficiently convert the pre-amplified fundamental Gaussian beam into optical vortex beams with a topological charge of l=±1. The desired vortex beam is then efficiently amplified to an average output power of 170 W with a pulse duration of ~95 ps and a mode purity of ~92% at a repetition

In situ growth of halide perovskite crystals and thin films on optical fiber end facets.

Halide perovskites exhibit significant advantages for active optical components such as light emitting diodes, solar cells and photodetectors due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Their nonlinear optical effects and other characteristics also make them suitable for integration into waveguide components, such as optical fibers, for applications like optical modulation. Although some efforts have been made to integrate perovskite nanomaterials with optical fibers, technological challenges have hindered reliable in situ preparation methods. Herein, we propose an area-selective wetting

Janus microfiber-based photothermal microgripper integrated on an optical fiber tip for precise micromanipulation.

Light-driven microactuators show great promise in micromanipulation, but conventional free-space illumination approaches are often limited by thermal crosstalk and spatial restrictions. To address these issues, we herein present a photothermal microgripper directly integrated onto an optical fiber tip, comprising two symmetrically arranged composite microfibers. Each microfiber contains both a carbon-loaded polyethylene (CPE) core and a transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) core. Upon optical excitation via the fiber, the CPE core absorbs light and experiences pronounced thermal expansion

Long-period grating optical fiber sensor for IgG-type monoclonal protein measurement.

Measuring monoclonal proteins (M-proteins) plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of plasma cell dyscrasias. Measurements of M-proteins are mostly conducted by electrophoresis, which requires complex sample processing and takes several hours to obtain a result. In this work, IgG kappa M-protein (IgGκ) and IgG lambda M-protein (IgGλ) sensors are developed based on a long-period grating optical fiber sensor. The IgGκ sensor has a limit of detection (LoD) of 2.78 μg/mL and a selectivity of 9.73. The IgGλ sensor has an LoD of 2.75 μg/mL and a selectivity of 27.9. The sensor has su

Smart photonic crystal fiber optical sensor for tuberculosis detection with machine learning integration.

One of the most common infectious disease-related causes of death globally, particularly in low- and middle-income nations, persists: tuberculosis. At a manifestation of globalization, causes of death keep growing. As it happens, we have developed a sensor that quickly recognizes tuberculosis. The sensor operates in the (1-2 THz) frequency band, resulting in exemplary recognition and accuracy. Our present work asserts the design and numerical analysis of a hexagonal hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) sensor for detecting tuberculosis (TB) cells adopting the finite element method (FEM)

In Situ Immunofluorescence Imaging of Vital Human Pancreatic Tissue Using Fiber-Optic Microscopy.

PURPOSE: Surgical resection is the only curative option for pancreatic carcinoma, but disease-free and overall survival times after surgery are limited due to early tumor recurrence, most often originating from local microscopic tumor residues (R1 resection). The intraoperative identification of microscopic tumor residues within the resection margin in situ could improve surgical performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fiber-optic microscopy for detecting microscopic residues in vital pancreatic cancer tissues. Experimental Design. Fresh whole-mount human pancre

Evaluation of reflective fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance sensor for monitoring scale deposition.

A reflective surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was evaluated for real-time monitoring of scale deposition. The sensor consists of an optical fiber, only 5 mm at the gold-coated tip of the sensing area. The effect of silica growth on the sensor response was evaluated using a Na2SiO3 solution. The sensitivity of the sensor to silica was 1.6 ± 0.3 nm per one immersion in the solution of 1000 mg/L (as SiO2) at 85 °C and subsequnt air drying, as indicated by the SPR peak shift. The amount of silica deposited on the gold surface was measured by the quartz crystal microbalance method, and the SP

Dual-resonance optical fiber lossy mode resonance immunoprobe for serum PSA detection.

Biomarker detection has emerged as an essential complementary approach for early-stage screening of tumors. Conventional methods are constrained by bulky systems, cumbersome operation steps, and low detection accuracy. Here, we demonstrate a dual-resonance optimally configured lossy mode resonance (LMR) immunoprobe for detecting prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a biomarker for prostate cancer (PCa). The dual-resonance structure used in this study introduces low-refractive-index magnesium fluoride (MgF2) as a matching layer before adding indium tin oxide (ITO) as a lossy mode excitation layer t
