Pulfrich's phenomenon in unilateral cataract.

AIMS: To determine whether unilateral cataract causes a pathological Pulfrich's phenomenon. METHODS: 29 subjects with unilateral cataract and contralateral pseudophakia were assessed on their ability to perceive the Pulfrich phenomenon. Using a computer generated pendulum image, and graded neutral density filters, a series of forced choice trials were performed in which the subject was required to describe the direction of any apparent pendulum rotation. A pathological Pulfrich effect was said to occur when apparent rotation was perceived in the presence of a zero strength neutral density fil

Screening test for early detection of myopia based on hybrid images.

Myopia screening is crucial as early intervention can slow its progression reducing the risk of vision-threatening diseases. We present an innovative method that can be used by non-experts, such as parents. The method relies on "hybrid images", an optical illusion merging two images with different spatial frequencies, creating a perception that changes depending on visual acuity. Hybrid images are created by combining one image with reduced low spatial frequencies and another with attenuated high spatial frequencies. Various cutoff frequencies have been tested, and an optimization phase was ru

Necker cube: stimulus-related (low-level) and percept-related (high-level) EEG signatures early in occipital cortex.

During observation of an ambiguous Necker cube, our percept changes spontaneously although the external stimulus does not. An EEG paradigm allowing time-resolved EEG measurement during endogenous perceptual reversals recently revealed a chain of ERP correlates beginning with an early occipital positivity at around 130 ms (Reversal Positivity, "RP"). In order to better understand the functional role of this RP, we investigated its relation to the P100, which is spatiotemporally close, typically occurring 100 ms after onset of a visual stimulus at occipital electrodes. We compared the relation o

Attraction of flashes to moving dots.

Motion is known to distort visual space, producing illusory mislocalizations for flashed objects. Previously, it has been shown that when a stationary bar is flashed in the proximity of a moving stimulus, the position of the flashed bar appears to be shifted in the direction of nearby motion. A model consisting of predictive projections from the sub-system that processes motion information onto the sub-system that processes position information can explain this illusory position shift of a stationary flashed bar in the direction of motion. Based on this model of motion-position interactions, w

Gamma abnormalities during perception of illusory figures in autism.

This experiment was designed to test the hypothesis that perceptual abnormalities in autism might be associated with alteration of induced gamma activity patterns overlying visual cortical regions. EEG was recorded from six adolescents with autism and eight controls matched on chronological age, and verbal and nonverbal mental age, whilst identifying the presence or absence of an illusory Kanizsa shape. Although there were no reaction time or accuracy differences between the groups there were significant task-related differences in cortical activity. Control participants showed typical gamma-b

A common oscillator for perceptual rivalries?

Perceptual rivalry is an oscillation of conscious experience that takes place despite univarying. if ambiguous, sensory input. Much current interest is focused on the controversy over the neural site of binocular rivalry, a variety of perceptual rivalry for which a number of different cortical regions have been implicated. Debate continues over the relative role of higher levels of processing compared with primary visual cortex and the suggestion that different forms of rivalry involve different cortical areas. Here we show that the temporal pattern of disappearance and reappearance in motion-

Mirror therapy in unilateral neglect after stroke (MUST trial): a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: We explored the effectiveness of mirror therapy (MT) in the treatment of unilateral neglect in stroke patients. METHODS: This is an open, blinded endpoint, randomized controlled trial carried out from January 2011 to August 2013. We included stroke patients with thalamic and parietal lobe lesions with unilateral neglect 48 hours after stroke. Patients were randomized to the MT group or the control group (sham MT), and both the groups received limb activation. Patients received treatment for 1-2 hours a day 5 days a week for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was unilateral neglect assess

Motion-induced positional biases in the flash-lag configuration.

When both stationary and moving objects are present in the visual field, localizing objects in space may become difficult, as shown by illusory phenomena such as the Fröhlich effect and the flash-lag effect. Despite the efforts to decipher how motion and position information are combined to form a coherent visual representation, a unitary picture is still lacking. In the flash-lag effect, a flash presented in alignment with a moving stimulus is perceived to lag behind it. We investigated whether this relative spatial localization (i.e., judging the position of the flash relative to that of the

Confuse your illusion: feedback to early visual cortex contributes to perceptual completion.

A striking example of the constructive nature of visual perception is how the human visual system completes contours of occluded objects. To date, it is unclear whether perceptual completion emerges during early stages of visual processing or whether higher-level mechanisms are necessary. To answer this question, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to disrupt signaling in V1/V2 and in the lateral occipital (LO) area at different moments in time while participants performed a discrimination task involving a Kanizsa-type illusory figure. Results show that both V1/V2 and higher-level visual

An fMRI study of the reverse perspective illusion.

"Reverse perspective" is a powerful visual illusion similar to the hollow mask illusion, but more interesting in producing the perception of an illusory motion in a stationary picture. It is caused by conflict between motion parallax and pictorial depth cues in 3D "relief" paintings built with depth inversion. Here we report the measurement of brain activation using fMRI in response to a reverse perspective (RP) object, as well as a normal perspective, 3D-relief object ("shadow-box", SB) and a 2D painting of the same architectural scene. The stimuli were presented to 10 subjects in static and

Local and global motion after-effects are both enhanced in migraine, and the underlying mechanisms differ across cortical areas.

Visual after-effects are illusions that occur after prolonged viewing of visual displays (pattern adaptation). The motion after-effect (MAE), for example, is an illusory impression of motion that is seen after viewing moving displays. After-effects have been used extensively in basic vision research as well as in clinical settings, and have been reported to be enhanced in migraine. Pattern adaptation is a cortical phenomenon that reflects both cellular mechanisms acting within individual neurons and specific interactions between groups of neurons activated by the adapting display. A remarkable

Vection: the contributions of absolute and relative visual motion.

Inspection of a visual scene rotating about the vertical body axis induces a compelling sense of self rotation, or circular vection. Circular vection is suppressed by stationary objects seen beyond the moving display but not by stationary objects in the foreground. We hypothesised that stationary objects in the foreground facilitate vection because they introduce a relative-motion signal into what would otherwise be an absolute-motion signal. Vection latency and magnitude were measured with a full-field moving display and with stationary objects of various sizes and at various positions in the

Going beyond the information given: the relation of illusory visual motion to brain activity.

There are many instances in which human subjects perceive a component which is not physically present in a visual stimulus. To study the cerebral activity which correlates with the perception of such an illusory component, we chose Enigma, a static figure in which many subjects perceive illusory motion. By using the technique of positron emission tomography (PET) we recorded the relative regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the brain of 13 subjects while they viewed it and reported seeing the illusory motion. We found that, when subjects perceived illusory motion, the increases in rCBF took

Activity in the fusiform gyrus predicts conscious perception of Rubin's vase-face illusion.

We localized regions in the fusiform gyrus and superior temporal sulcus that were more active when subjects viewed photographs of real faces than when they viewed complex inanimate objects and other areas in the parahippocampal gyrus and the lateral occipital lobe that showed more activity during the presentation of nonface objects. Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was then used to monitor activity in these extrastriate visual areas while subjects viewed Rubin's vase-face stimulus and indicated switches in perception. Since the spontaneous shifts in interpretation were too r

Exploring the cognitive phenotype of autism: weak "central coherence" in parents and siblings of children with autism: I. Experimental tests.

Previous twin and family studies have indicated that there are strong genetic influences in the etiology of autism, and provide support for the notion of a broader phenotype in first-degree relatives. The present study explored this phenotype in terms of one current cognitive theory of autism. Parents and brothers of boys with autism, boys with dyslexia, and normal boys were given tests of "central coherence", on which children with autism perform unusually well due to an information-processing bias favouring part/detail processing over processing of wholes/meaning. Results indicated that fath

Parietal contributions to visual feature binding: evidence from a patient with bilateral lesions.

Neurophysiologists have documented the existence of multiple cortical areas responsive to different visual features. This modular organization has sparked theoretical interest in how the "binding problem" is solved. Recent data from a neurological patient (R.M.) with bilateral parietal-occipital lesions demonstrates that the binding problem is not just a hypothetical construct; it can be a practical problem, as rare as the selective inability to perceive motion or color. R.M. miscombines colors and shapes even under free viewing conditions and is unable to judge either relative or absolute vis

[The characteristics of vestibular-visual interaction in patients with cochleovestibular disorders under galvanic stimulation].

The paper deals with the problem of vestibular-visual interactions in pathogenesis of cochleovestibular diseases. The investigations were made on the original unit for registration of visual illusions in response to galvanic stimulation of vestibular structures. The examination covered patients with Meniere's disease, peripheral and central cochleovestibular syndrome, otogenic arachnoiditis. Emergence of visual illusions was related to the degree of vestibular abnormality and threshold stimulation. The greatest compensation of the equilibrium function at the expense of vision was reported in p

Retinal mechanisms in the perception of subjective contours: the contribution of lateral inhibition.

One mechanism frequently proposed for the creation of subjective contours and their related brightness effects involves lateral neural interactions on the retina, such as the lateral inhibitory effects that underlie brightness contrast. Subjective contour stimuli were displayed under an intermittent light source, with rapid onset and slow offset as has been shown to increase lateral inhibitory interactions by allowing summation of neural onset transients. A sample of forty subjects, using magnitude estimates, reported increased subjective contour clarity and brightness effects under these expo

The buzz-lag effect.

In the flash-lag illusion, a brief visual flash and a moving object presented at the same location appear to be offset with the flash trailing the moving object. A considerable amount of studies investigated the visual flash-lag effect, and flash-lag-like effects have also been observed in audition, and cross-modally between vision and audition. In the present study, we investigate whether a similar effect can also be observed when using only haptic stimuli. A fast vibration (or buzz, lasting less than 20 ms) was applied to the moving finger of the observers and employed as a "haptic flash." P
