Effects of short-term exposure to red or near-infrared light on axial length in young human subjects.

PURPOSE: To determine whether visible light is needed to elicit axial eye shortening by exposure to long wavelength light. METHODS: Incoherent narrow-band red (620 ± 10 nm) or near-infrared (NIR, 875 ± 30 nm) light was generated by an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and projected monocularly in 17 myopic and 13 non-myopic subjects for 10 min. The fellow eye was occluded. Light sources were positioned 50 cm from the eye in a dark room. Axial length (AL) was measured before and after the exposure using low-coherence interferometry. RESULTS: Non-myopic subjects responded to red light with

Corneal biomechanics are not exclusively compromised in high myopia.

INTRODUCTION: Research assuming linearity has concluded that corneal biomechanics are compromised in high myopia. We investigated whether this assumption was appropriate and re-examined these associations across different levels of myopia. METHODS: Myopic (spherical equivalent refraction, SER ≤ -0.50 D) eyes of 10,488 adults aged 40-69 years without any history of systemic and ocular conditions were identified in the UK Biobank. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression was employed to test the linear association between corneal hysteresis (CH) or corneal resistance factor (CRF), separately, an

Refractive power profiles of commercially available soft multifocal contact lenses for myopia control.

PURPOSE: Lens power profiles can provide valuable insights on the imposed optical defocus and visual experience of contact lens wearers, especially in the context of myopia control. This study measured the refractive power profiles of multifocal soft contact lenses (MFCLs) currently used or that have the potential for use in myopia control using high spatial resolution aberrometry. The instrument's repeatability for determining MFCLs power profiles was also assessed. METHOD: The power profiles of 10 MFCLs of various designs (centre-distance, centre-near and extended depth of focus) were measu

The induced defocus by Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact lenses is dependent on visual distance and ambient illuminance.

PURPOSE: Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact (DISC) lenses, a commonly used type of multifocal lens in clinical practice, may slow down myopia progression by inducing myopic retinal defocus. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the induced defocus across the retina could be affected by visual environments encountered in the real world, such as differences in viewing distance and ambient illuminance. METHODS: In this cross-over trial, 30 myopic adults wore both DISC lenses and single vision contact (SVC) lenses in random order. An open-view Hartmann-Shack scanning wavefront sensor wa

Accommodating version of a schematic eye for emmetropia and myopia.

AIM: To develop an accommodating, wide-angle, schematic eye for emmetropia and myopia in which spectacle refraction and accommodation level are input parameters. METHOD: The schematic eye is based on an earlier unaccommodated refraction-dependent eye for myopia developed by Atchison in 2006. This has a parabolic gradient index lens and parameters derived from biometric and optical measurements on young adults. Several parameters are linearly dependent upon spectacle refraction (anterior radius of curvature of the cornea, axial length and vertex radii of curvature and conic asphericities of a

The association between participant-reported ratings of comfort, dryness and vision quality in soft contact lens wearers.

INTRODUCTION: Previous literature has indicated an association between participant-reported perceptions (e.g., ratings) of comfort, dryness and vision quality during soft contact lens wear. However, these reports do not account for participant- and lens-specific factors which may impact the interpretation of these results. The purpose of this project was to quantify the association between these participant-reported ratings while accounting for both participant- and lens-specific factors. METHODS: Participant-reported ratings (scale 0-100) of comfort, dryness and quality of vision for 675 sof

Extracting full information from OCT scans-signs of early age-related macular degeneration within inner retinal layers by local neighbourhood statistics. Part I: Methodology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Associations between the occurrence of early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and alterations in retinal layer thicknesses have been reported based on classical processing of optical coherence tomography (OCT) data by noise removal and subsequent image segmentation. However, speckle noise within OCT data itself bears a substantial part of the total information. For this reason, an omics-type approach was designed for full exploitation of OCT data, which was able to identify signs of early AMD throughout the retina as a whole. METHODS: A nested case-control stu
