PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of targeted modifications to a clinical 4D-MR pulse sequence on displacement accuracy for abdominal tumor motion tracking, and to compare its performance with established 4D-MR and 4D-CT protocols using a motion phantom driven by clinically representative respiratory waveforms.
METHODS: A commercially available MRI-compatible motion phantom was used to simulate abdominal tumor motion driven by both sinusoidal and patient-derived respiratory waveforms. Imaging was performed on a 1.5T MRI scanner using a 3D radial stack-of-stars sequence for 4D-MR imaging and

An important role of visual systems is to detect nearby predators, prey, and potential mates, which may be distinguished in part by their motion. When an animal is at rest, an object moving in any direction may easily be detected by motion-sensitive visual circuits. During locomotion, however, this strategy is compromised because the observer must detect a moving object within the pattern of optic flow created by its own motion through the stationary background. However, objects that move creating back-to-front (regressive) motion may be unambiguously distinguished from stationary objects beca

Vestibular symptoms caused by migraine, referred to as vestibular migraine, are a frequently diagnosed but poorly understood entity. Based on recent evidence that normal subjects generate vestibular-mediated percepts of head motion and reflexive eye movements using different mechanisms, we hypothesized that percepts of head motion may be abnormal in vestibular migraine. We therefore measured motion detection thresholds in patients with vestibular migraine, migraine patients with no history of vestibular symptoms, and normal subjects using the following paradigms: roll rotation while supine (dy

Object-motion-sensitive (OMS) circuits must ignore self-motion while remaining sensitive to independently moving objects. We show that the mouse retina solves this by geometrically filtering motion coherence. Correlative light and electron microscopy reveal that TH2 amacrine cells (GABAergic Type-2 wide-field amacrine cells in the TH-Cre mouse strain) combine a dense proximal arbor with sparse radiating distal neurites, distributing synapses uniformly across both compartments. Two-photon imaging and compartmental modeling establish that sparse inhibition and voltage-gated sodium channels allow

Deep learning models have achieved state-of-the-art performance in automated Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) analysis. However, the efficacy of these models is highly dependent on the availability of high-quality, artifact-free images. In clinical practice, CMR acquisitions are frequently degraded by respiratory motion, yet the robustness of deep learning models against such artifacts remains an underexplored problem. To promote research in this domain, we organized the MICCAI CMRxMotion challenge. We curated and publicly released a dataset of 320 CMR cine series from 40 healthy volunteers wh

An effective radiotherapy treatment entails maximizing radiation dose to the tumor while sparing the surrounding and normal tissues. With the advent of SBRT with extreme hypo-fractionation in treating tumors including prostate where ablative dose is delivered in smaller number of fractions, rectum remains a dose-limiting organ and at the risk of rectal toxicity or secondary cancer. The same limitation of rectal toxicity exists for high-dose rate (HDR) treatments of cervical, endometrial, or prostate cancer when creating even a short distance between the anterior rectal wall and field of radiat

UNLABELLED: Locating, tracking, and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigate how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. We find that target mot

BACKGROUND: Adhesions between the abdominal wall and intestinal tract from previous surgeries can complicate reoperations; however, predicting the extent of adhesions preoperatively is difficult. This study aimed to develop a straightforward approach for predicting adhesion severity using a novel abdominal ultrasound technique that quantifies the displacement of motion vectors of two organs to enhance surgical safety. The efficacy of this methodology was assessed experimentally and clinically.
METHODS: Using Aplio500T, a system we developed, we measured the displacement of the upper peritoneu

Microgravity affects the different organ systems to various degrees. In particular, a thoracocephalic fluid shift occurs through suppression of the hydrostatic gradient. Sensory conflict leads to space motion sickness, which is frequent early in the flight, and the musculo-skeletal system is perturbed by the lack of stimuli. The respiratory system seems to be less affected. These changes do not seem to impair health or performance. Humans seem able to adapt to long-term exposure to microgravity, but disorders can occur on return to Earth. In-flight preventive measures need be developed.

Almost any insult to the body can set in motion the sequence of physiologic and biochemical changes leading to shock. In the absence of effective treatment widespread disruption of the body's biological mechanisms inevitably follows. This review will describe some of cellular and subcellular disturbances associated with the shock syndrome, the persistence of which lead to (multiple) organ failure. Current views as to the mechanisms of these disturbances will be outlined with particular reference to hypovolemic and septic shock. Finally, an indication will be given of the relevant therapeutic i

The actual knowledge of the thresholds of stimulation of the otolith organ is reviewed. A vestibular stimulus unknown until now with a value transgressing the threshold has been found. This gravitational force is due to the gravitation of the sun and is caused by the fact that the spacecraft is moving at a different speed with respect to the sun on one side of the orbit than on the other. The problems of vestibular experiments in space and the connection with space motion sickness due to a field of microgravitation in orbiting spacecrafts is discussed.

Visual processing of biological motion (BM) produced by living organisms is of immense value for successful daily-life activities and, in particular, for adaptive social behavior and nonverbal communication. Investigation of BM perception in neurodevelopmental disorders related to autism, preterm birth, and genetic conditions substantially contributes to our understanding of the neural mechanisms underpinning the extraordinary tuning to BM. The most prominent research outcome is that patients with daily-life deficits in social cognition are also compromised on visual body motion processing. Th

In this work, we proposed a novel computer modeling and simulation technique for motion tracking of lung bronchi (or tumors) under respiration using 9 cases of computed tomography (CT)-based patient-specific finite element (FE) models and Ogden's hyperelastic model. In the fabrication of patient-specific FE models for the respiratory system, various organs such as the mediastinum, diaphragm, and thorax that could affect the lung motions during breathing were considered. To describe the nonlinear material behavior of lung parenchyma, the comparative simulation for biaxial tension-compression of

BACKGROUND: The rapid advancement of computed tomography (CT) has greatly improved clinical diagnosis but has also introduced new challenges in radiation protection. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between organ doses from Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and CT dose metrics for head CT exams with organ dose modulation (ODM), and to develop a simplified method for estimating individual organ doses.
METHODS: A CT source model including the X-ray energy spectrum, bowtie filter, fan beam shape, and rotational motion of the tube was constructed and validated. The modeling was divided in

Motion sickness is a common experience for many people. Several previous researches indicated that motion sickness has a negative effect on driving performance and sometimes leads to serious traffic accidents because of a decline in a person's ability to maintain self-control. This safety issue has motivated us to find a way to prevent vehicle accidents. Our target was to determine a set of valid motion sickness indicators that would predict the occurrence of a person's motion sickness as soon as possible. A successful method for the early detection of motion sickness will help us to construct

A phantom is a highly specialized device, which mimic human body, or a part of it. There are three categories of phantoms: physical phantoms, physiological phantoms, and computational phantoms. The phantoms have been utilized in medical imaging and radiotherapy for numerous applications. In radiotherapy, the phantoms may be used for various applications such as quality assurance (QA), dosimetry, end-to-end testing, etc In thoracic radiotherapy, unique QA problems including tumor motion, thorax deformation, and heterogeneities in the beam path have complicated the delivery of dose to both tumor

In this study, the affinity profile of idaverine for the M1- (neuronal tissue), M2- (heart) and M3- (glandular tissue/nonvascular smooth muscle) muscarinic receptors was examined by means of radioligand binding and in vitro organ bath experiments in order to use the compound for the investigation of the muscarinic receptor subtype involved in motion sickness. In the profile study a comparison was made with the muscarinic antagonists atropine, pirenzepine (M1-selective) AF-DX 116 (M2-selective) and 4-DAMP (high affinity for M1- and M3-binding sites). The affinity of idaverine appeared to be equ

This paper reviews 14 patients who underwent elbow arthrotomy for osteochondritis of the capitellum. The etiology in 7 of the 14 cases appears to be the result of repeated trauma from throwing sports. Five of the 14 described a singular significant traumatic episode, and in 2 of the 14, a clear etiology is uncertain. The diagnostic features including signs, symptoms, and elbow range of motion are examined. The operative findings are correlated with plain x-ray films of the elbow in all cases and with an elbow arthrogram in 11 out of 14 cases. The average length of followup was 24 months. The p

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To investigate the intra-fraction breast motion during long-lasting treatments of breast cancer with Helical Tomotherapy by means of an optical tracking system.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A set of seven radio-transparent passive markers was placed on the thoraco-abdominal surface of twenty breast cancer patients and tracked by an infrared tracking system. A continuous non-invasive monitoring of intra-fraction motion from patient setup verification and correction to the end of radiation delivery was thus obtained. The measured displacements were analysed in terms of cyclic

Patients with bilateral parieto-occipital brain damage may show intact processing of individual objects, while their perception of multiple objects is disturbed at the same time. The deficit is termed 'simultanagnosia' and has been discussed in the context of restricted visual working memory and impaired visuo-spatial attention. Recent observations indicated that the recognition of global shapes can be modulated by the spatial distance between individual objects in patients with simultanagnosia and thus is not an all-or-nothing phenomenon depending on spatial continuity. However, grouping mech
