Effect of the vertical position of the canine on the frictional/orthodontic force ratio of Ni-Ti archwires during the levelling phase of orthodontic treatment.

This study investigated the effect of the vertical position of the canine on changes in the frictional/orthodontic (F/O) force ratio of nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) archwires during the initial levelling phase of orthodontic treatment. Frictional and orthodontic forces were measured by using low-friction brackets and Ni-Ti archwires with three different cross-sectional sizes and force types. To simulate canine malocclusion (first premolar extraction case), the upper right canine was displaced gingivally by 1 to 3 mm and the inter-bracket distance between the upper right lateral incisor and second p

Case report: Management of severe posterior open bite due to primary failure of eruption.

BACKGROUND: Primary failure of tooth eruption (PFE) is a rare condition affecting any or all posterior quadrants. Unilateral involvement of maxillary and mandibular quadrants causes a dramatic posterior open bite that requires complex management strategies. CASE REPORT: An 8 year-old boy attended the Dublin Dental School and Hospital regarding infra-occlusion of his right maxillary and mandibular primary molars. Both right first permanent molars had also failed to erupt. All permanent teeth were present radiographically. Facial appearance and soft tissues were normal and oral function was not

Implant Malposition with Severe Anterior Periodontal Tissue Loss: An Interdisciplinary Treatment Strategy.

This case report describes the interdisciplinary management of a 58-year-old woman with a misaligned dental implant in the maxillary left lateral incisor region, causing esthetic and functional challenges. Initial assessments revealed significant bone loss around the compromised implant, an asymmetric smile, and excessive gingival display. The treatment included slow orthodontic extrusion to reposition adjacent teeth, promoting bone and periodontal regeneration, and orthodontic intrusion on the contralateral side to correct occlusal cant and improve gingival esthetics. Aligners with miniscrew

[Orthodontics in general practice. 2. Treatment of eruption failures].

Since the introduction of composites and bonding in orthodontics, the possibilities of aligning impacted teeth into the dental arch after a surgical intervention, have remarkably increased. There are 4 important treatment techniques. The closed-eruption technique includes bracket-bonding to and ligating of the exposed tooth, followed by repositioning of the mucosal flap. The disadvantage of the method is the uncontrollable orthodontic force on the non-visible tooth during orthodontic extrusion. The open-eruption technique aims at keeping the exposed tooth visible, followed by spontaneous erupt

Periodontal health of orthodontically extruded impacted teeth. A split-mouth, long-term clinical evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Impaction of front teeth (often upper canines) can result in esthetic, functional, and phonetic problems, in addition to root resorption and chronic or acute infections. Most impacted front teeth can be extruded orthodontically after minor periodontal surgery. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the periodontal outcome of surgically exposed and orthodontically extruded impacted teeth compared with the spontaneously erupted contralateral teeth. METHODS: A total of 38 patients, who had been treated by a combined surgical and orthodontic approach (closed eruption t

Multidisciplinary treatment for a patient with traumatically intruded permanent canine and premolar.

When selecting treatment for traumatically intruded teeth, various factors should be evaluated including the degree of intrusion, pulp vitality, patient's age and maturity of the tooth. Treatment options consist of surgical repositioning, orthodontic extrusion and spontaneous re-eruption. This study describes a case of a 22-year-old male with traumatically intruded maxillary canine and first premolar that was treated comprehensively by an orthodontist, endodontist and prosthodontist two months after injury.

Root resorption of a partially erupted tooth: a case report.

This article reports a case of a maxillary second premolar which on presentation was partially erupted, and which resisted attempts at orthodontic extrusion. The crown of the tooth was eventually restored using an adhesive composite onlay technique. The patient subsequently complained of pain and the root of the tooth showed radiographic evidence of resorption. The root of the extracted tooth had a vital pulp but massive external resorption was evident, with repair with bone-like material.

Three-dimensional comparison of the effects of sliding mechanics in labial and lingual orthodontics using the finite element method.

INTRODUCTION: The extraction of maxillary first premolars is usually the treatment of choice to resolve crowding, alveolar protrusion, or Class II malocclusion. The demand for a lingual orthodontic treatment is increasing because of its esthetic value; therefore, understanding lingual biomechanics is essential to every clinician. This study compared the 3-dimensional (3D) effects of sliding mechanics in labial and lingual orthodontics using the finite element method. METHODS: Twelve 3D finite element models were created with different power arm heights and miniscrew positions. A 150 g of retr

Failure after closed traction of an unerupted maxillary permanent canine: Diagnosis and treatment planning.

This report describes the treatment of a 13-year-old girl with unerupted maxillary permanent canines. It illustrates how recognizing an unexpected problem influenced the decision-making process. Despite 6 months of closed-eruption traction, the left canine had not erupted. However, the neighboring teeth were intruded, suggesting a diagnosis of canine ankylosis. When the site was surgically reopened, the wire chain used for the orthodontic traction appeared to be osseointegrated. It was renewed, and traction was applied for another 16 months, and the tooth was successfully brought into the arch

Orthodontic management of a horizontally impacted maxillary incisor in an adolescent patient.

Horizontal maxillary incisor impaction is not common, but it affects facial esthetics, phonetics, and the patient's self-esteem. Therefore, it is necessary to manage this problem as early as possible. This case report presents a patient with an unerupted maxillary left central incisor combined with anterior and left posterior crossbite, edge-to-edge overbite on the right and left anterior open bite, low smile line, and mild skeletal Class III discrepancy. The treatment consisted of 3 stages: (1) maxillary expansion and sufficient space creation for the impacted tooth; (2) surgical exposure by

Orthodontic traction of impacted canines: Concepts and clinical application.

Orthodontic traction of impacted canines stands as a major challenge for Orthodontics. It is a relatively frequent clinical complaint which management, more often than not, requires a multidisciplinary approach. Surgical exposure of the impacted canine, and the complex orthodontic mechanics applied to align the tooth back into the arch, may frequently lead to complications involving supporting tissues, not to mention the long treatment time and high costs imposed to patients. In face of that, it is worth highlighting the relevance of early diagnosis as to intervene efficiently and as soon as p

Impacted maxillary canines--a perennial problem.

UNLABELLED: Ectopic eruption with impaction of maxillary permanent canine teeth is a frequently encountered clinical problem. Surgical exposure and attachment of a gold chain to impacted maxillary canines is often required in order to bring them into the dental arch and to allow good alignment. The principle of radiographic parallax is employed to determine whether the impacted canine is placed buccal or palatal to adjacent teeth. Good flap design allows adequate access to the impacted tooth. Bone removal should be adequate to free the impacted crown to its greatest circumference. An orthodont
