Orthodontic treatment, like any aspect of general dentistry, exposes the clinician to the risk of malpractice and litigation. While for orthodontists this issue has not been a major concern over the last century, risk management has, over the last decade, become a significant issue in orthodontic practice. The patient-orthodontist contact may be classified into pre-treatment, active treatment and post-treatment periods. Risk management issues pertinent to each time period are discussed in this article with the intention of increasing the clinician's awareness of potential problems. Armed with

Over the past decade, dramatic progress has been made in dental research areas involving laser therapy. The photobiomodulatory effect of laser light regulates the behavior of periodontal tissues and promotes damaged tissues to heal faster. Additionally, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), a non-invasive treatment, when applied in orthodontics, contributes to alleviating pain and reducing inflammation induced by orthodontic forces, along with improving tissue healing processes. Moreover, PBMT is attracting more attention as a possible approach to prevent the incidence of orthodontically induced

Orthodontic treatment is a widely used dental procedure aimed at correcting mal-alignments for improving oral aesthetics. However, a significant proportion of patient's undergoing orthodontic treatment experience root resorption. This is a complex phenomenon characterized by the loss of tooth root structure. Further, the etiology of root resorption is multifaceted with various factors contributing to its development. Moreover, genetic factors play a crucial role in predisposing individuals to root resorption. Therefore, it is of interest to review the effect of genetic factors on root resorpti

External apical root resorption (EARR) is a common complication of orthodontic treatment. Nevertheless, effective preventive strategies have not yet been established. Here, we demonstrated that administration of green tea catechin (epigallocatechin gallate: EGCG), at concentrations equivalent to habitual human daily intake when adjusted for rat body weight, prevented root resorption while preserving tooth movement in rats. An L-loop orthodontic appliance was used to induce vertical intrusive tooth movement for the maxillary first molar; EGCG was administered at doses of 1 and 2 mg every other

Many types of antibacterial coating have been applied to fixed orthodontic devices to prevent bacterial attachment and subsequent dental caries. However, challenges such as weak adhesion, lack of remineralization ability, cytotoxicity, and a short duration of effectiveness remain unresolved. Therefore, there is a critical need for coatings that offer strong surface adherence, long-lasting antibacterial properties, and remineralization potential. In this study, we achieved controlled release of the antimicrobial agent minocycline through a polydopamine coating chemically grafted onto the surfac

Gingival recession (GR) in malpositioned teeth with a thin periodontal phenotype poses a high risk during orthodontic movement. Phenotype modification before orthodontic treatment may reduce complications and improve clinical outcomes. A 27-year-old woman presented with a 3-mm RT2 gingival recession and<1 mm of keratinized tissue (KT) in tooth 31, which was labially displaced. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed the absence of the vestibular bone, and clinical evaluation confirmed a thin periodontal phenotype. To prevent GR progression during orthodontic movement, a tunneled coronall

BACKGROUND: Dental trauma is a frequent injury seen commonly in young children. There is a link between malocclusion and the incidence of traumatic dental injuries. Orthodontic therapy has been suggested as a preventative measure in correcting unfavourable malocclusions and potentially avoiding traumatic dental injuries. To date, it is poorly understood if the complications reported following traumatic dental injuries are amplified during and following orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether orthodontists considered the endodontic implications associated with the o

Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) poses a significant clinical challenge, as excessive orthodontic force shortens tooth longevity by impairing cementoblast-mediated cementum mineralization and promoting root resorption. Cementoblasts, essential for mineralized cementum formation and resistance to resorption, exhibit altered mechanosensitivity and mechanotransduction under orthodontic force, yet the role of mitophagy in this process remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how the S1PR1/mitophagy axis modulates cementoblast mineralization and OIIRR pr

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is often necessary to correct malocclusions in adolescence or adulthood. However, oral hygiene is complicated by appliances, and prior studies indicate that they may trigger oral inflammation and dysbiosis of the oral microbiota, especially during the first 3 months after insertion, and, thus, may present a risk for inflammatory oral diseases. In recent periodontal therapeutic studies, probiotics have been applied to improve clinical parameters and reduce local inflammation. However, limited knowledge exists concerning the effects of prob

Root resorption often occurs after tooth trauma and may also occur during orthodontic tooth movement. This has been attributed to bacteria and inflammation or a combination of both aetiologies. The literature suggests that root canal treatment performed on a traumatized tooth that will concurrently or subsequently undergo orthodontic tooth movement may forestall the resorptive process. This case report provides evidence for this prevention and discusses the hypothesis for the absence of resorption on root-treated teeth.

One of the most challenging problems in orthodontics is anchorage. The traditional mechanical methods of reinforcing anchorage are limited by multiple factors, but a pharmacological approach aimed at utilizing the known biological mechanisms underlying tooth movement may provide an ideal way of reinforcing orthodontic anchorage. So we make the hypotheses that if the resorptive process of modeling during tooth movement can be inhibited, tooth movement may be inhibited as well. Since osteoprotegerin (OPG) has been found to be a key factor in the inhibition of osteoclast differentiation and activ
