Post-Orthokeratology Changes in the Corneal Epithelium Induced by an Orthokeratology Lens: An Anterior-Segment Optical Coherence Tomography Assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate detailed regional changes in corneal epithelial thickness after orthokeratology treatment according to the targeted refractive power. METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 63 eyes of 44 patients who underwent overnight orthokeratology for the correction of myopia. Corneal epithelial thickness was segmentally measured using anterior segment optical coherence tomography before and after treatment. RESULTS: In the central zone (0-2 mm), the corneal epithelial thickness was significantly decreased by 7.54±5.46 μm ( P <0.05). In the paracentral zone (2-4 mm)

[Correlation between the increase in corneal higher-order aberrations and the control of children's myopic anisometropia after wearing orthokeratology lenses].

Objective: To explore the interocular differences in both the increase of corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) and axial length elongation, and the correlation between them after orthokeratology lens (OK lens) wear in children with myopic anisometropia. Methods: It was a prospective cohort study. From 2018 to 2019, 31 children with myopic anisometropia who were fitted with OK lenses initially in the Department of Ophthalmology of Peking University Third Hospital were enrolled, including 15 males (30 eyes) and 16 females (32 eyes). The age was (10.7±1.4) years. Before (baseline) and 12 month

The influence of orthokeratology compression factor on ocular higher-order aberrations.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the influence of compression factor upon changes in ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in young myopic children undergoing orthokeratology treatment. METHODS: Subjects aged between six and < 11 years, with low myopia (0.50-4.00 D inclusive), low astigmatism (≤ 1.25 D), and anisometropia (≤ 1.00 D), were randomly assigned to wear orthokeratology lenses of different compression factors in each eye (one eye 0.75 D and the fellow eye 1.75 D). HOAs were measured weekly over one month of lens wear. Wavefront analysis was conducted over a 5-mm pupil using a sixth order

Short-Term and Long-Term Changes in Corneal Power Are Not Correlated With Axial Elongation of the Eye Induced by Orthokeratology in Children.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between short-term and long-term changes in power at different corneal locations relative to the change in central corneal power and the 2-year change in axial elongation relative to baseline in children fitted with orthokeratology contact lenses (OK). METHODS: Thirty-one white European subjects 6 to 12 years of age and with myopia -0.75 to -4.00 DS and astigmatism ≤1.00 DC were fitted with OK. Differences in refractive power 3 and 24 months post-OK in comparison with baseline and relative to the change in central corneal power were determined from corneal

Fluorophotometry to evaluate the corneal epithelium in eyes undergoing contact lens corneal reshaping to correct myopia.

PURPOSE: To determine whether use of Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT, Paragon Vision Sciences) lenses have an adverse effect on the health of corneal epithelium by monitoring epithelial permeability by fluorophotometry. METHODS: Eight patients with healthy eyes and whose refractive error was between -0.50 and -4.00 diopters (D) sphere and up to -1.75 D of astigmatism were enrolled. On the day of the fitting, two baseline fluorometric scans of the right eye were taken using the Ocumetrics Fluorotron Master. After 15 minutes, another two scans were taken of the right eye. Short-term orthokeratology effects on corneal biomechanics with a focus on SPA1 and stress-strain index (SSI) parameters in pediatric myopia.

PURPOSE: Although the orthokeratology effects on corneal biomechanics have been proven with clinical trials, reports of stiffness parameter change are scarce. This study investigated the short-term orthokeratology effects in pediatric myopia and compared stiffness parameter changes to those published in recent clinical investigations. This prospective study aimed to investigate corneal biomechanics changes induced by short-term overnight orthokeratology treatment, focusing on stiffness parameter at A1 and stress-strain index. METHODS: Twenty-six children aged 8 to 18 were included in this stu

A Novel Model for Cornea Power Shift in Eyes Wearing Orthokeratology Lenses With Different Back Optic Zone Diameters for Myopia Control.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to quantify the corneal power changes after wearing orthokeratology lenses of different back optic zone diameters (BOZDs) and to propose a novel 4-parameter model capable of revealing the associations between each parameter and axial length growth (ALG). METHODS: A prospective self-controlled study was conducted between June 2022 and December 2023. One eye in each subject (N = 33) was randomly assigned to wear a lens with a BOZD of either 5 mm (5 oz) or 6 mm (6 oz). Choroidal Thickness Changes after Orthokeratology Lens Wearing in Young Adults with Myopia.

INTRODUCTION: Recently in South Korea, there are increasing number of young adults undergoing orthokeratology treatment for myopia control. They prefer orthokeratology treatment more than wearing spectacles or having a refractive surgery for several reasons. However, there is little research on the effect of orthokeratology treatment on choroids. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the change in choroidal thickness (CT) in the horizontal axis in young myopic adults after orthokeratology treatment. METHODS: This was a retrospective research among young myopic patients (-1.0 to -5.

Age and initial spherical equivalent influence the axial length elongation in children aged 9-17 years undergoing orthokeratology therapy.

BACKGROUND: Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses are increasingly used in children to manage myopia by reshaping the cornea and potentially influencing axial length changes. This study investigated factors affecting axial length changes in children aged 9-17 years wearing Ortho-K lenses, focusing on age, initial spherical value, and other parameters. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 84 children (49 males, 35 females, aged 9-17 years) who wore Ortho-K lenses at the Tenth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University between January 2018 and December 2019, with a minimum follow-up

Corneal elevation asymmetry vector: Viable predictor of severe one-year-averaged orthokeratology lens decentration.

BACKGROUND: To assess the predictive value of pretreatment corneal elevation asymmetry vector (CEAV) for severe orthokeratology (Ortho-k) lens decentration (LD) in Chinese myopic adolescents. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 247 myopic participants over one year employed a novel MATLAB algorithm to calculate CEAV and precise LD vector. Subjects were categorized into mild (<1 mm) and severe (≥1 mm) yearly averaged LD (YALD) groups. Logistic regression and ROC analysis evaluated the relationship between corneal parameters and severe YALD. RESULTS: LD reached stability within the first mont

Factors related to axial length elongation and myopia progression in orthokeratology practice.

PURPOSE: To investigate which baseline factors are predictive for axial length growth over an average period of 2.5 years in a group of children wearing orthokeratology (OK) contact lenses. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the clinical records of 249 new OK wearers between January 2012 and December 2013 from the contact lens clinic at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University were reviewed. The primary outcome measure was axial length change from baseline to the time of review (July-August 2015). Independent variables included baseline measures of age at initiation of OK wear, gender,
