Hyponatremia in psychiatric patients: update on evaluation and management.

BACKGROUND: Hyponatremia (serum sodium concentration < 136 mEq/L) is a prevalent and potentially dangerous medical comorbidity in psychiatric patients. METHODS: MEDLINE was used to identify peer-reviewed publications that described the role of arginine vasopressin (AVP) in the pathogenesis of hyponatremia, the presentation and treatment of hyponatremia in psychiatric patients, and promising new treatment options. RESULTS: Polydipsia may lead to hyponatremia in patients with schizophrenia, which is mediated, in part, by a reduced osmotic threshold for the release of AVP and by a defect in the

[Cochlear and vestibular risk at high altitude].

Exposure to lowered oxygen pressure at high altitude results in various physiological reactions. The most important response besides hyperventilation is the elevation of the oxygen transport capacity, which simply is achieved by plasma diuresis. Hemoconcentration however not only increases oxygen uptake but also raises blood viscosity, serum osmolality and impairs blood flow. Various observations have suggested that hearing and postural properties deteriorate under these conditions at high altitude. Studies in hypobaric chambers and our own data indicate that the elevated hematocrit levels and

Serum albumin inhibits echovirus 7 uncoating.

Echoviruses induce a wide spectrum of diseases in man, the most severe being meningitis. In neonates, however, a severe systemic infection can be observed, leading to death. Serum albumin is the most abundant protein in plasma and most interstitial fluids, and its functions include osmoregulation and transport and delivery of hydrophobic molecules such as fatty acids and steroids. The results of cold-synchronized one-step growth analysis of echovirus 7 infection and sucrose-gradient analysis of A-particles suggest that physiological concentrations of albumin block echovirus 7 infection by inhi

Polyuria and polydipsia and disturbed vasopressin release in 2 dogs with secondary polycythemia.

In dogs, secondary polycythemia (SP) may be associated with polyuria and polydipsia (PU/PD). The pathogenesis of this PU/PD has not yet been explained. We hypothesized that hyperviscosity and increased blood volume in SP might affect vasopressin (VP) release, resulting in PU/PD. This hypothesis was tested in 2 dogs with SP caused by renal neoplasia and PU/PD. Osmoregulation of VP release was studied by a modified water deprivation test and by investigating the VP response to hypertonic saline infusion. Water deprivation test results were consistent with an inability to produce concentrated uri

Plasma and cerebrospinal fluid measures of arginine vasopressin secretion in patients with bulimia nervosa and in healthy subjects.

Bulimia nervosa is a psychiatric syndrome associated with intense hunger, deficient satiety mechanisms, an obsessional preoccupation with the adverse consequences of eating, ritualistic binge eating, and subsequent purging to forestall the effects of the binge. The morbidity of this illness reflects both the psychological suffering associated with a life organized around pathological eating behaviors, as well as medical complications such as fluid and electrolyte imbalances that occur largely as a result of purging and laxative abuse. We report here a study of the osmoregulation of plasma argi

Osmotic stress influences microtubule drug response via WNK1 kinase signaling.

Ion homeostasis is critical for numerous cellular processes, and disturbances in ionic balance underlie diverse pathological conditions, including cancer progression. Targeting ion homeostasis is even considered as a strategy to treat cancer. However, very little is known about how ion homeostasis may influence anticancer drug response. In a genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 resistance drug screen, we identified and validated the master osmostress regulator WNK1 kinase as a modulator of the response to the mitotic inhibitor rigosertib. Osmotic stress and WNK1 inactivation lead to an altered response not

The landscape of metabolic brain alterations in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is accompanied by metabolic alterations both in the periphery and the central nervous system. However, so far, a global view of AD-associated metabolic changes in the brain has been missing. METHODS: We metabolically profiled 500 samples from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Metabolite levels were correlated with eight clinical parameters, covering both late-life cognitive performance and AD neuropathology measures. RESULTS: We observed widespread metabolic dysregulation associated with AD, spanning 298 metabolites from various AD-relevant pathways.

Crosstalk between Light- and Temperature-Mediated Processes under Cold and Heat Stress Conditions in Plants.

Extreme temperatures are among the most important stressors limiting plant growth and development. Results indicate that light substantially influences the acclimation processes to both low and high temperatures, and it may affect the level of stress injury. The interaction between light and temperature in the regulation of stress acclimation mechanisms is complex, and both light intensity and spectral composition play an important role. Higher light intensities may lead to overexcitation of the photosynthetic electron transport chain; while different wavelengths may act through different phot

Neurohypophyseal function in postpartum hypopituitarism: impaired plasma vasopressin response to osmotic stimuli.

We studied neurohypophyseal function in 12 women with postpartum hypopituitarism (Sheehan's syndrome) by measuring plasma arginine vasopressin concentrations during 5% hypertonic saline infusions. All patients had a history of obstetric shock or massive bleeding, and were receiving cortisol and/or L-T4 replacement therapy. None had any symptoms of diabetes insipidus. The mean basal plasma vasopressin level in the patients [0.6 +/- 0.1 (+/- SE) pmol/L] was significantly lower (P less than 0.01) than that in normal adults (2.5 +/- 0.5 pmol/L; n = 12), whereas mean plasma osmolality values were s

A case of 'essential' hypernatraemia due to resetting of the osmostat.

We describe a 24-year-old short, obese girl who has bizarre episodic neurological abnormalities related to hyperosmolality due to hypernatraemia. Investigation of osmoregulation by water loading and infusion of hypertonic saline revealed (i) hypodipsia with thirst onset raised to plasma osmolality of 332 mmol/kg and (ii) elevation of the threshold for vasopressin release (plasma osmolality 320 mmol/kg) but normal slope of the plasma vasopressin-plasma osmolality curve. Baroregulated vasopressin release was also grossly subnormal. Other hypothalamo-pituitary investigations showed deficiencies o

Hypodipsia-hypernatremia syndrome.

The pathogenesis of the rare hypernatremia, usually described in the literature as "neurogenic" or "essential" hypernatremia, consists of defective thirst mechanism either alone or in combination with impaired osmoregulation of ADH release. As etiology, disturbances of the neoplastic, vascular and degenerative type and malformations in the hypothalamic area are known. In patients with the hypodipsia-hypernatremia syndrome, dysfunction of the anterior pituitary lobe, obesity, abnormal regulation of body temperature, psychomotor retardation and episodic muscular weakness are frequently encounter

Taurine and taurine-deficiency in the perinatal period.

Taurine, a non-protein sulfur amino-acid, is the most abundant free amino-acid in the body and plays an important role in several essential biological processes. Apart from its role in cholesterol degradation, it acts as neurotransmitter, and has a function as osmoregulator and antioxidant in most body tissues. During pregnancy, taurine accumulates in the maternal tissues, to be released in the perinatal period to the fetus via the placenta and to the newborn via the maternal milk. It is accumulated especially in the fetal and neonatal brain. Low maternal taurine levels result in low fetal tau

Effect of paroxetine on plasma vasopressin and water load testing in elderly individuals.

Hyponatremia sometimes occurs in elderly depressed patients treated wtih a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI). The cause of the hyponatremia is not yet understood. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of paroxetine, an SRI, on osmoregulated release of vasopressin (also termed antidiuretic hormone) in elderly depressed patients with normal serum sodium. Four women and one man ages 61 to 74 years with a major depressive disorder were administered a water load after they had been treated with a therapeutic dose of paroxetine for 3 to 11 months. Three healthy elderly subjects n

Ontogeny of Osmoregulatory Structures in the Shrimp Penaeus japonicus (Crustacea, Decapoda).

The ontogeny of differentiated osmoregulatory epithelia in the branchial chamber (gills, branchiostegite, pleura, epipodite) was studied by transmission electron microscopy throughout the postembryonic development of Penaeus japonicus. These epithelia are characterized by typical cytological features, including apical microvilli and numerous basal infoldings associated with mitochondria. Differentiated osmoregulatory structures are not observed in the early larval stages: nauplii and zoea 1. In the next larval stages, zoeas and mysis, gills and epipodites are developed as buds only, but osmore

Degradation of the microbial stress protectants and chemical chaperones ectoine and hydroxyectoine by a bacterial hydrolase-deacetylase complex.

When faced with increased osmolarity in the environment, many bacterial cells accumulate the compatible solute ectoine and its derivative 5-hydroxyectoine. Both compounds are not only potent osmostress protectants, but also serve as effective chemical chaperones stabilizing protein functionality. Ectoines are energy-rich nitrogen and carbon sources that have an ecological impact that shapes microbial communities. Although the biochemistry of ectoine and 5-hydroxyectoine biosynthesis is well understood, our understanding of their catabolism is only rudimentary. Here, we combined biochemical and

Uptake and secretion of host proteins by Taenia crassiceps metacestodes.

Although the presence of intact host proteins in the cyst fluid of cyclophyllidean metacestodes has been well documented, the underlying reason for protein uptake is poorly understood. To investigate this discrepancy, both the cyst fluid (CF) and excreted/secreted (E/S) proteins were collected in vitro from Taenia crassiceps metacestodes 16 wk postinfection in Balb/cJ female mice. The CF and E/S were subsequently immunoblotted using rabbit anti-mouse whole serum antibodies as a probe. The results show that whole host proteins were not only internalized by metacestodes but also secreted as well

Transcriptome analysis revealed lncRNA-mRNA modules responsive to low temperature stress in Qingke.

BACKGROUND: Qingke (hull-less barley), a staple crop on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, has evolved unique stress tolerance mechanisms. Cold stress damages plants through ice formation and oxidative stress, triggering antioxidant systems and stress-related gene expression. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to regulate these responses. RESULTS: Physiological analysis revealed a dynamic defense strategy: antioxidant systems (SOD/POD) activated early (12 h), shifting to osmotic regulation (soluble protein) later (48 h). Membrane damage (MDA/conductivity) increased under stress but showed repa

Adaptation to extreme environments: A review of Antarctic fish physiology.

Having evolved in the chronically cold and thermally stable waters of the Southern Ocean (SO) for millions of years, Antarctic fish possess a suite of physiological specializations that enable them to survive at temperatures near the freezing point of seawater. Adaptations include the evolution of antifreeze proteins, modifications of membrane composition, altered metabolic processes, unique mechanisms of oxygen transport and utilization, and distinctive cellular stress responses. This review synthesizes current knowledge of the physiological adaptations of Antarctic fish, focusing on the mech

Enhancing anammox resistance to salinity stress through waste iron scraps addition: Performance and microbial community dynamics.

This study investigated the potential of waste iron scraps (WIS) to improve salinity resistance in anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) systems. Two reactors (R1 was used as a control and R2 was modified with WIS) were operated under increasing salt stress (0-2.75 %). At 2 % salinity, R2 attained a nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 4.4 ± 0.2 kg/(m3·d), 93 % greater than R1 (2.3 ± 0.3 kg/(m3·d)). When salinity escalated to 2.75 %, R1 collapsed completely, while R2 maintained stable performance with NRR of 1.8 ± 0.2 kg/(m3·d). Microbial network analysis revealed WIS significantly strengthened int

Cyclic di-AMP traps proton-coupled K+ transporters of the KUP family in an inward-occluded conformation.

Cyclic di-AMP is the only known essential second messenger in bacteria and archaea, regulating different proteins indispensable for numerous physiological processes. In particular, it controls various potassium and osmolyte transporters involved in osmoregulation. In Bacillus subtilis, the K+/H+ symporter KimA of the KUP family is inactivated by c-di-AMP. KimA sustains survival at potassium limitation at low external pH by mediating potassium ion uptake. However, at elevated intracellular K+ concentrations, further K+ accumulation would be toxic. In this study, we reveal the molecular basis of
