Humans taking part in parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) may suffer from space motion sickness-phenomena (SMS, a kinetosis). It has been argued that SMS during PAFs might not be based on microgravity alone but rather on changing accelerations from 0 g to 2 g. We test here the hypothesis that PAF-induced kinetosis is based on asymmetric statoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head), with asymmetric inputs to the brain being disclosed at microgravity. Since fish frequently reveal kinetotic behaviour during PAFs (especially so-called spinning movement

OBJECTIVE: To explore effective methods for the diagnosis and treatment of horizontal-canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (HC-BPPV).
METHODS: Medical records from nine patients with HC-BPPV, treated between July 1996 and March 2000, were retrospectively analyzed. Data of complete history, audiograms, positional tests and neuro-otological examinations were collected. All patients were treated with a particle repositioning maneuver called the "barbecue rotation" which starts with the patient in the supine position and consists of three 90-degree head rotations towards the unaffected ear.

The subjective visual horizontal (SVH) was measured by means of a small rotatable luminous line in darkness in the upright body position and at 10, 20 and 30 degrees of body tilt to the right and left prior to, and during a follow-up period after, stapedotomy in 12 patients with otosclerosis. In the acute stage after surgery, SVH in the upright body position was significantly tilted away from the operated side. In addition, the perception of roll tilt towards the operated side (Kop) was significantly increased after stapedotomy, while the perception of roll tilt towards the healthy side (Khe)

The Tullio phenomenon consists of vestibular symptoms on exposure to high-intensity acoustic stimuli, reflecting pathological stimulation of semicircular canals or otoliths. We report a patient with posttraumatic Tullio phenomenon to illustrate how precise measurement of eye movements during auditory stimulation, using the magnetic search coil technique, may characterize movements that are not clinically apparent or easily measured by other means. Such measurements in patients with surgically verified lesions may further elucidate the mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon.

1. During rotations that dynamically activate utricular and saccular primary afferents, the otolith system centrally detects the velocity and direction of rotation of the head in space. This property is experimentally manifested as a steady-state compensatory nystagmus during constant velocity off-vertical axis rotations. The computational, physiological, and anatomic details of this response remain presently unknown. Here we report that surgical inactivation of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula abolished the ability of the otolith system to generate steady-state nystagmus during consta

Technical-grade dinocap, a complex-mixture fungicide, is teratogenic in the CD-1 mouse, causing cleft palate and otolith defects. In this study we compared the developmental toxicities of 2,4-dinitro-6-(1-methylheptyl)phenyl crotonate and 2,6-dinitro-4-(1-methylheptyl)phenyl crotonate, model isomers of the major active ingredients of technical dinocap, to the known teratogenicity of the technical compound. Individual isomers, both isomers combined, or technical dinocap were administered to pregnant mice on days 7-16 of gestation. Some dams were killed at term and litters were removed, dead fet

The early orbital flights, although undertaken with considerable confidence, involved some uncertainty because of the impossibility of simulating under terrestrial conditions all of the conditions encountered in space. However, space-flight achievements by both the American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts have firmly established that man, if appropriately selected, trained, and protected by suitable life-support systems, can perform efficiently for long periods of time in the hostile environment of space. We know that the side effects of vestibular origin pose important problems in space expl

The vestibulo-collic reflex represents a promising test for evaluating the integrity of otolith function. We have investigated the threshold of this response in a group of normal subjects, and the effect of a conductive hearing loss. A positive response was recorded in 31 of 32 normal subjects. The threshold of the vestibulo-collic reflex varied from 80 to 97 dBHL in these subjects with a 95% response rate at a threshold at 96 dBHL. A total of 23 ears with a conductive hearing loss in 17 patients were also investigated. The average conductive hearing loss (at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz) ranged from 8

BACKGROUND: Usher's syndrome type II (USH2) is a rare genetic disorder encompassing hearing loss, vision impairment, and apparent intact vestibular function. Recent research suggests a potential involvement of the otolith vestibular receptors in USH2.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Evaluate otolith dynamic function in USH2.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two USH2 (median age 53.9 ± 2.99) and age-matched controls underwent a complete battery vestibular testing including air conducted cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (c-VEMPs and o-VEMPs). Vestibular function tests were correlated wit

OBJECTIVE: To separate vestibular neuritis (VN) from posteriorcirculation stroke (PCS) using quantitative tests of canal and otolith function.
METHODS: Video Head-Impulse tests (vHIT) were used to assess all three semicircular canal pairs; vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain and saccade metrics were examined. Cervical and ocular-Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potentials (c- and oVEMP) and Subjective Visual Horizontal (SVH) were used to assess otolith function.
RESULTS: For controls (n = 40), PCS (n = 22), and VN (n = 22), mean horizontal-canal VOR-gains were 0.96 ± 0.1, 0.85 ± 0.3 and 0.40 ± 0.2,

Otoconia are minute biocrystals composed of glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and CaCO3 , and are indispensable for sensory processing in the utricle and saccule. Otoconia abnormalities and degeneration can cause or facilitate crystal dislocation to the ampulla, leading to vertigo and imbalance in humans. In order to better understand the molecular mechanism controlling otoconia formation and maintenance, we have examined the spatial and temporal expression differences of otoconial genes in the mouse inner ear at developmental, mature and aging stages using whole transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq)

INTRODUCTION: The sacculo-collic reflex is believed to be a short latency, otolith-mediated myogenic response to sound. With the application of air-conducted sound, one would expect an absent response in stapes fixation, as a fixed stapes footplate will not transmit a pressure wave to the saccule.
METHODS: Fifty patients (70 stapes surgery ears, 26 otosclerotic ears and four normal ears) and 40 controls underwent repeated sacculo-collic tests.
RESULTS: The results support the proposed mechanism for the sacculo-collic response. The study also suggests that, whilst stapedotomy piston prosthese

Humans taking part in parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) may suffer from motion sickness (SMS, a kinetosis; it comprises a dynamic and a static component). Since it has been repeatedly shown earlier that some fish of a given batch reveal a kinetotic behaviour during PAFs (especially so-called spinning movements and looping responses),

In vertebrates (including man), altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunctions of the inner ears, based on irregular movements of the semicircular cristae or on dislocations of the inner ear otoliths from the corresponding sensory epithelia. This will lead to illusionary tilts, since the vestibular inputs are not confirmed by the other sensory organs, which results in an intersensory conflict. Vertebrates in orbit therefore face severe orientation problems. In humans, the intersensory conflict may additionally lead to a malaise, commonly referred to as space

We compared susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to sudden-stop stimulation as a function of gravitoinertial force level. Our findings show that susceptibility is greatly enhanced, both with eyes-closed and eyes-open, for zero-g and 2-g conditions in parabolic flight compared with 1-g test conditions. The change in susceptibility is likely related to three factors: alterations in vestibulo-ocular function which result from variations in gravitoinertial force level (28,29); the altered pattern of otolithic activity resulting during variations in gravitoinertial force level; and the
