Tinnitus related to eyelid blinking.

Tinnitus can be generated by various causes, including vascular or myogenic factors and sensorineural auditory structures. Tinnitus due to repetitive contraction of the paraauditory muscles is a rare condition. We present a case of bilateral tinnitus concomitant with eyelid blinking. Otoscopy revealed normal tympanic membranes; however, inward movement of the tympanic membrane was visible whenever the patient blinked. Long-time-based tympanometry measuring static compliance revealed a cogwheel or saw-toothed pattern associated with movement of the tympanic membrane related to eyelid blinking.

Acoustic impedance measurement in the otological assessment of multiply handicapped children.

This survey investigated the use of acoustic impedance measurement on a population of multiply handicapped children and correlated the results with otoscopy. Thirty-one children were tested with an impedance meter studying tympanometry, tympanic membrane compliance, and acoustic reflex. Otoscopic examination was also scheduled for each child. The results show that 42% of children tested had some kind of middle-ear problem, mostly unrecognized at the time of this survey. There was 100% agreement between impedance and otoscopic findings. Apparently impedance audiometry can be useful for identify

Isolation and genomic analysis of otomycosis pathogens, and genomics-informed antimicrobial peptide design with potential therapeutic applications.

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections are increasingly recognized as a major public health challenge, and superficial diseases such as otomycosis remain clinically consequential because persistence, recurrence, and treatment failure are common when the causative species and susceptibility profile are not clearly defined. However, otomycosis associated isolates are often insufficiently characterized at the genomic level. Furthermore, the development of antifungal candidates, particularly for short antimicrobial peptides, remains heterogeneous in terms of the integration of efficacy, biosafety, and mech

Update on first African clinical trial on earpopper for the treatment of otitis media with effusion [FCT/UATH/HREC/PR/330].

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a middle ear condition characterized by the accumulation of serous fluid. It is common, though not exclusive; among children with its attendant developmental consequence if missed or untreated in early life. OME could be managed surgically, pharmacologically, or physiologically. EarPopper is a medical device developed for physiologic management of OME, Eustachian tube dysfunction, and related problems. We aim to ascertain the suitability/efficiency of EarPopper® device for the treatment of OME in our setting. METHODOLOGY: This is a prospective i

Normative wideband acoustic immittance patterns for middle ear evaluation in dogs.

The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical use of wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) reflectance for middle ear assessment in dogs. Otoscopy and brainstem auditory evoked response testing was performed on all dogs prior to the WAI assessment. Following calibration, dogs were comfortably restrained while the probe was placed into the ear canal to obtain recordings. Testing was repeated for replicability. Repeatable WAI reflectance patterns were observed in 24 dogs, characterized by low-reflectance resonant peaks at approximately 1500-1800 Hz and 3000-4000 Hz. Observed patterns

Atypical Ramsay Hunt syndrome (zoster sine herpete) with otitis media.

A 21-year-old man presented with an acute onset of bilateral throbbing headache, left ear pain, tinnitus, and fever. There was no skin rash on his face. Otoscopy revealed hyperemia and exudate over the left tympanic membrane. The swab culture of the exudate grew methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, and the patient was diagnosed as acute otitis media. Hearing loss and ipsilateral facial paralysis developed on hospital day 4. Despite the absence of typical bullous lesions, serology testing and polymerase chain reaction of the otic exudate for varicella-zoster virus were positive. The pat

Do you know otitis media with ANCA-Associated Vasculitis (OMAAV)?

Hearing loss is often the only symptom of OMAAV at initial presentation, thus making early diagnosis difficult. We present OMAAV in a 70-year-old woman with hearing loss and dry cough. Otoscopy showed otitis media with effusion. Audiometry showed mixed hearing loss, especially in the right ear. Serum myeloperoxidase antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody was positive. Image analyses showed lung lesion and interstitial pneumonia, while bronchoscopy showed possible microscopic polyangiitis. After starting and tapering prednisolone, respiratory and otologic symptoms improved. When examining patients

Liposarcoma of temporal bone: a case report.

This is the third case report of liposarcoma of the temporal bone. A 69-year-old man complained of left otalgia, left otorrhea, and dizziness for several months, with a past history of tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma 28 years previously. Otoscopy revealed debris in the attic. We performed tympanoplasty for recurrent cholesteatoma. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was well-differentiated liposarcoma. Palliative resection of liposarcoma was performed 3 months after the first surgery. Neither local recurrence nor distant metastasis has been detected for 24 months after the first surgery.

The Red Ear-drum: To Treat or Not To Treat?

Acute otitis media is typified by the patient with fever, earache, and a "red" ear-drum. Suppurative otitis media, however, often presents without specific symptoms, and redness is the least reliable physical finding. Impaired tympanic membrane mobility on pneumatic otoscopy and bulging and opacification of the ear-drum are more reliable and important physical signs. Review of placebo-controlled trials reveals that antimicrobial therapy produces more rapid relief of fever and earache in patients with the most symptoms. Effects on patients with fewer symptoms are more modest. Amoxicillin remain

Chronic secretory otitis media.

212 of 242 patients (88%) treated for chronic secretory otitis media in 1972 were re-examined 5 years later. A total of 668 otological procedures has been performed, 99 patients being treated only once, while one patient received 12 procedures. The pure tone threshold was 20 dB or less in 88% of the ears in 1977, whilst only 57% had a type A tympanogram. Normal otoscopy was found in 40.5% of the ears, persisting secretory otitis in 11%, atelectasis in 2.8% and chronic suppurative otitis in 2.6%; the remaining 42.9% showed varying degrees of scarring and myringosclerosis.

[Otitis media with effusion in children: research advances from microecological mechanisms to precision diagnosis and treatment].

Otitis media with effusion(OME) is a prevalent otologic condition in children that may lead to persistent hearing impairment and speech-language developmental delays. Recent studies have demonstrated that nasopharyngeal-middle ear microecological dysbiosis plays a central role in OME pathogenesis and chronicity. Advances in precision diagnostics-including AI-assisted otoscopy, wideband acoustic immittance, and electronic nasopharyngoscopy-have improved early detection, while individualized interventions such as microbiota-targeted probiotics and balloon Eustachian tuboplasty offer promising st

[Low-grade (polymorphous) adenocarcinoma of the middle ear mimicking a jugulotympanic paraganglioma. German version].

A 64-year-old female patient presented with otalgia and hearing loss in the right ear. On otoscopy, the right tympanic membrane was highly vascularized and bulged into the anteroinferior quadrant. High-resolution computed tomography revealed an osteolytic lesion with occupation of the hypotympanum extending into the petrous apex and right parapharyngeal space as well as infiltration of the wall of the right internal carotid artery. MRI strengthened the suspicion of a jugulotympanic paraganglioma. The biopsy material obtained through exploratory tympanotomy was assessed as a low-grade polymorph
