[The effect of ionol on oxidative-reductive processes in the kidney during heat stroke].

Heat stroke was induced in intact rats in a thermal chamber (45 degrees C) and simultaneously a group of animals was subjected to overheating for the same time but was given intraperitoneal injections of ionol (120 mg/kg) for 2 days and 30 minutes before exposure in the chamber. Significant increase of the concentration of intermediates--lactate, pyruvate, malate, glutamate, ammonia--and decrease of the alpha-ketoglutarate content occurred in the renal tissue in animals of both groups. The NAD/NADH ratio in the cytoplasm and mitochondria reduced essentially, to a greater degree in animals give

Cordierite and citric acid regulate crystal structure of manganese oxide for effective selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide.

Catalyst is the key to effective selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide, and developing catalyst is always one of the hottest topics in both field of industry and academy. In order to realize an industrial application, one catalyst must grow on a specific support. However, seldom work compared the difference of catalyst growth with or without support. In this work, Mn2+ growth on cordierite (a typical commercial catalyst support) was investigated. The formed active species were detailedly characterized. As a result, orthorhombic cordierite guided Mn2+ to form orthorhombic oxide (γ-MnO

Photocatalytic deoxygenation of N-O bonds with rhenium complexes: from the reduction of nitrous oxide to pyridine N-oxides.

The accumulation of nitrogen oxides in the environment calls for new pathways to interconvert the various oxidation states of nitrogen, and especially their reduction. However, the large spectrum of reduction potentials covered by nitrogen oxides makes it difficult to find general systems capable of efficiently reducing various N-oxides. Here, photocatalysis unlocks high energy species able both to circumvent the inherent low reactivity of the greenhouse gas and oxidant N2O (E 0(N2O/N2) = +1.77 V vs. SHE), and to reduce pyridine N-oxides (E 1/2(pyridine N-oxide/pyridine) = -1.04 V vs. SHE). The utilization of dye wastewater in enhancing catalytic activity of CeO2-TiO2 mixed oxide catalyst for NO reduction and dichloromethane oxidation.

Waste is a misplaced resource. Herein, anionic (orange II sodium salt and Ponceau 2R) and cationic (Rhodamine B and Methylene blue) dye wastewater assisted photo-treatment (referred as DAPT) method was developed to modify sol-gel synthesized CeO2-TiO2 (CeTi) mixed oxide catalyst. Catalytic activity test results showed that both anionic and cationic dye wastewater could be used as "fuel" of photo-treatment to enhance the activity of CeTi catalyst in NO reduction and dichloromethane oxidation. Characterization and DFT calculation results revealed that DAPT process increased the amount of Ce3+ io

Interaction of nitric oxide with photoexcited rose bengal: evidence for one-electron reduction of nitric oxide to nitroxyl anion.

The interaction of nitric oxide (.NO) with Rose Bengal (RB) in the presence of electron donors was investigated. Upon illumination of a mixture of RB and .NO with visible light, an enhancement in the rate of .NO consumption was observed that increased with increasing RB concentration. In the presence of electron donors (NADH, glutathione, or ascorbate), the rates of .NO depletion increased further. NADH enhanced .NO depletion to a greater extent than either glutathione or ascorbate. Photoactivated RB under anaerobic conditions reacts with NADH to form the RB anion radical (RB.-), which has a c

Boosted charge separation in CoWO4/SnIn4S8 S-scheme heterojunctions toward high-performance photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction and formaldehyde oxidation.

The fabrication of S-scheme heterojunctions with a robust internal electric field is regarded as an effective approach to improve the photocatalytic activity. Herein, a CoWO4/SnIn4S8 (abbr. CWO/SIS) S-type heterojunction was prepared applying electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis techniques and exhibited outstanding photocatalytic properties toward carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction and formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation. Specifically, the CO2 reduction rate of the optimal 50% CWO/SIS sample reached 1.75 μmol·g-1·h-1 with a CO selectivity of 99%. Meanwhile, the HCHO removal efficiency achieved 78%

Heterostructured Copper-Palladium Phosphide Particles as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Oxidation and Oxygen Reduction in Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells.

Engineering lattice strain, electronic structure, and crystallinity in palladium alloys offers a promising approach to significantly enhance their electrocatalytic performance. In this work, we present a versatile strategy to synthesize Pd-based phosphide alloys integrated with non-noble metal atoms (Pd-M-P; M = Co, Ni, Cu), characterized by expanded lattice structures and a crystalline-amorphous core-shell architecture. Catalytic performance assessments revealed that CuPdP exhibits an impressive mass activity of 7.96 A mgPd-1 for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), which is 10.6 times highe

Niobium Carbide and Tantalum Carbide as Nitrogen Reduction Electrocatalysts: Catalytic Activity, Carbophilicity, and the Importance of Intermediate Oxidation States.

Significant interest in the electrocatalytic reduction of molecular nitrogen to ammonia (the nitrogen reduction reaction: NRR) has focused attention on transition metal carbides as possible electrocatalysts. However, a fundamental understanding of carbide surface structure/NRR reactivity relationships is sparse. Herein, electrochemistry, DFT-based calculations, and in situ photoemission studies demonstrate that NbC, deposited by magnetron sputter deposition, is active for NRR at pH 3.2 but only after immersion of an ambient-induced Nb2O5 surface layer in 0.3 M NaOH, which leaves Nb suboxides w

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron(III) reduction catalyzed by a lithoautotrophic nitrate-reducing iron(II) oxidizing enrichment culture.

The last two decades have seen nitrogen/iron-transforming bacteria at the forefront of new biogeochemical discoveries, such as anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction (feammox) and lithoautotrophic nitrate-reducing ferrous iron-oxidation (NRFeOx). These emerging findings continue to expand our knowledge of the nitrogen/iron cycle in nature and also highlight the need to re-understand the functional traits of the microorganisms involved. Here, as a proof-of-principle, we report compelling evidence for the capability of an NRFeOx enrichment culture to catalyze the feammox p

Roles of silica coating on nanosized zero-valent iron in sequential reduction-oxidation process in a system containing persulfate.

A sequential reduction-oxidation process using silica-coated nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles (nZVI@SiO2) and persulfate for mineralizing recalcitrant compounds was developed, and the effects of the process on nitrobenzene were evaluated. This sequential process significantly enhanced contaminant mineralization, which could not be effectively achieved by reduction or oxidation alone. The nZVI@SiO2 rapidly reduced nitrobenzene to aniline, then the aniline concentration gradually decreased after persulfate had been added and initiated sequential oxidative degradation. The SiO2 coating

Oxidation‑reduction potential parameters worsen following intraarterial therapy in patients with reduced collateral circulation and middle cerebral artery occlusions.

Collateral circulation is important for cerebral perfusion in acute ischemic strokes. Monitoring the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) may be useful to assess collateral status or treatment efficacy. The objectives of the present study were to determine if the ORP was associated with collateral circulation status in middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusions and to identify patterns in the ORP and the collateral circulation status among patients treated with intraarterial therapy (IAT) over time. The present pilot study was nested within a prospective cohort study measuring the ORP of the perip

Study on the biodegradability improvement of 2,4 dinitrophenol in wastewater using advanced oxidation/reduction process with UV/SO3/ZnO.

2,4-Dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) is a toxic compound that is widely used in many industrial and agricultural processes. This compound has low biodegradability in the environment due to its aromatic structure, and it is unsuccessfully eliminated by other chemical methods. Therefore, in this study, an integrated oxidation and reduction method was used to remove 2,4-DNP from the aqueous medium, in order to simultaneously use the benefits of oxidizing and reducing radicals in 2,4-DNP degradation. 2,4-DNP degradation was modeled by response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD). Sulfide-Induced Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium Supports Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation (Anammox) in an Open-Water Unit Process Wetland.

Open-water unit process wetlands host a benthic diatomaceous and bacterial assemblage capable of nitrate removal from treated municipal wastewater with unexpected contributions from anammox processes. In exploring mechanistic drivers of anammox, 16S rRNA gene sequencing profiles of the biomat revealed significant microbial community shifts along the flow path and with depth. Notably, there was an increasing abundance of sulfate reducers (Desulfococcus and other Deltaproteobacteria) and anammox microorganisms (Brocadiaceae) with depth. Pore water profiles demonstrated that nitrate and sulfate c

The performance and mechanism of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose in promoting the anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with Fe (III) reduction.

Anaerobic ammonium (NH4+-N) oxidation coupled with Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) is a novel promising nitrogen removal pathway, but the unsatisfactory nitrogen removal induced by the low bioavailability of Fe(III) compounds limited its engineering potential. In this study, three easily available exogenous reinforcing substances (ERSs), humic acid (HA), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) and sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), were used to improve Fe(III) bioavailability and Feammox performance. All the three ERSs notably improved nitrogen removal and electrochemical conditions during the 36-h batch te

Unveiling Fe reduction-induced synergy between anaerobic ammonium oxidation and Fe-Reducing/Oxidizing bacteria for high efficiency nitrogen removal.

Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) provides an energy-efficient approach to wastewater treatment but is limited by unstable nitrite supply and nitrate accumulation. This study developed an innovative iron-nitrogen (Fe-N) coupled system that achieved 97 % total nitrogen removal using a low NO2--N/NH4+-N molar ratio of 0.75 and 3.69 mM Fe2O3 addition. Isotopic tracing and molecular analyses revealed a synergistic nitrogen removal network: Anammox contributed 67 % of NH4+-N oxidation, while Feammox (Fe(III) reduction coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation) played a complementary role under

Synergistic effects of CuS/TiO2 heterointerfaces: Enhanced cathodic CO2 reduction and anodic CH3OH oxidation for paired electrosynthesis of formate.

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into energy-carrying compounds or value-added chemicals is of great significance for diminishing the greenhouse effect. However, it is still imperative to replace the less-value anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to improve the technical economy. Herein, we firstly reported a bifunctional CuS/TiO2 catalyst for both anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and cathodic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R). The in-built abundant CuS/TiO2 heterointerfaces are found to boost the CO2R and MOR to produce formate. Based on the unique bifunctionality of C

Enhanced simultaneous absorption of NOx and SO2 in oxidation-reduction-absorption process with a compounded system based on Na2SO3.

Oxidation of sulfite and competitive absorption existed in Na2SO3 solution for simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2, inhibited the long-term high-efficiency when used for practical applications. A matching strategy was developed to solve these problems. Antioxidants combination was used to retard the oxidation of antioxidant and enhance inhibition of S(IV) (tetravalent sulfur) oxidation. Hydroquinone (HQ) and sodium thiosulfate (ST) showed a positive synergistic effect on inhibition of S(IV) oxidation. When SO2 concentration was 500 and 2000 ppmV, the addition of 0.1 wt.% HQ and 1 wt.% ST decre

Correlation of oxidation reduction potential and total motile sperm count: its utility in the evaluation of male fertility potential.

Oxidative stress (OS) is detrimental to sperm functions, and the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) is a good measure of OS as it considers the balance between oxidants and reductants. Total motile sperm count (TMSC) is viewed as the single most important semen analysis parameter that can predict male infertility severity, and its correlation with ORP has never been undertaken. The objectives of this study were to assess the correlation between ORP and TMSC, to identify the ORP cutoff value based on the TMSC result, and to compare this cutoff value with previously reported ORP cutoff values i

Insights into the Oxidation of Organic Cocontaminants during Cr(VI) Reduction by Sulfite: The Overlooked Significance of Cr(V).

Literature works reported that organic cocontaminants could be degraded during Cr(VI), a contaminant, reduction by sulfite (Cr(VI)/sulfite process). However, the role of Cr(V) and Cr(IV) intermediates in the Cr(VI)/sulfite process has been overlooked. In this study, we confirmed the generation of Cr(V) and proposed a new mechanism for the decomposition of coexisting organic contaminants during Cr(VI)/sulfite reactions occurring in oxygenated solutions at pHini 4.0 with the molar ratio of sulfite to Cr(VI) of 10.0. UV-visible and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra indicate that Cr(V)
