Self-inflicted gingival injury due to habitual fingernail scratching: a case report with a 1-year follow up.

Injuries to oral soft-tissues can occur due to accidental, iatrogenic, and factitious traumas. Traumatic lesions, whether chemical, physical, or thermal in nature, are among the most common in the mouth. A type of physical injury to the gingival tissues is self-inflicted. Sometimes the lesions are termed gingivitis artefacta. Self-inflicted gingival injuries in children and adolescents can occur as a result of accidental trauma, premeditated infliction, or chronic habits such as fingernail biting, digit sucking, or sucking on objects such as pens, pencils or pacifiers. The purpose of this case

Lethal Lullabies: A History of Opium Use in Infants.

Poppy extract accompanied the human infant for more than 3 millenia. Motives for its use included excessive crying, suspected pain, and diarrhea. In antiquity, infantile sleeplessness was regarded as a disease. When treatment with opium was recommended by Galen, Rhazes, and Avicenna, baby sedation made its way into early medical treatises and pediatric instructions. Dabbing maternal nipples with bitter substances and drugging the infant with opium were used to hasten weaning. A freerider of gum lancing, opiates joined the treatment of difficult teething in the 17th century. Foundling hospitals

Electrical storm: Role of stellate ganglion blockade and anesthetic implications of left cardiac sympathetic denervation.

An electrical storm is usually associated with catecholaminergic surge following myocardial ischaemia and manifest as recurrent ventricular arrhythmias, requiring frequent DC shocks. Delivering repeated DC shocks induces myocardial damage and further worsens the arrhythmias, which are resistant to the antiarrhythmic drugs. Cardiac sympathetic blockade abates the excessive catecholaminergic drive and help pacifying the malignant ventricular arrhythmias. We treated the electrical storm in a 52-year-old male with ultrasound-guided left sympathetic ganglion block followed by surgical left cardiac

Prevalence of white spot lesions in children and adolescents across Northern, Central and Southern Italy: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of carious lesions allows the implementation of remineralization strategies, combined with improved at-home oral hygiene and dietary modifications, to reverse the demineralization process and prevent progression to cavitation. In recent years, the prevalence of white spot lesions (WSLs) in pediatric populations has increased, highlighting the importance of their monitoring. OBJECTIVE: The present multicenter cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of WSLs (ICDAS-II codes 1-2) among children and adolescents in northern (Trieste), central (Rome), an

Increased prevalence of latex-sensitization among children with chronic renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Type-I-allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) has been shown to be more prevalent among certain groups of patients. Children suffering from chronic renal failure (CRF) could be a suspected risk group because of their intense exposure to latex through catheters, gloves and anesthetic equipment during frequent hospitalizations from early life on. We investigated the prevalence of latex-sensitization among this group of patients and sought to identify risk factors. METHODS: Ninety-three patients (mean age 10.5 years) suffering from CRF were assessed by questionnaire-based history (det

Microplastics and child health: A scoping review of prenatal and early-life exposure routes and potential health risks.

Microplastics (MPs) is defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm. MPs have become a major environmental pollutant and it is originating from the breakdown of larger plastic waste. This article aims to explore MPs exposure to human health, particularly its potential effects during early developmental years. Studies reveal that MPs exposure begins via intra-uterine route, where MPs were detected in the placenta, amniotic fluid, umbilical cord, fetal membranes, and umbilical vein blood. As infants developed, the MPs exposure continued via breast milk, milk storage bags, formula, feeding bottles

Towards Better Understanding of the Pathogenesis of Neuronal Respiratory Network in Sudden Perinatal Death.

Sudden perinatal death that includes the victims of sudden infant death syndrome, sudden intrauterine death syndrome, and stillbirth are heartbreaking events in the life of parents. Most of the studies about sudden perinatal death were reported from Italy, highlighting two main etiological factors: prone sleeping position and smoking. Other probable contributory factors are prematurity, male gender, lack of breastfeeding, respiratory tract infections, use of pacifiers, infant botulism, extensive use of pesticides and insecticides, etc. However, extensive studies across the world are required t

Management of neonatal abstinence syndrome from opioids.

Most infants at risk for neonatal abstinence syndrome have opioid plus another drug exposure; polypharmacy is the rule rather than the exception. Scales for evaluation of neonatal abstinence syndrome are primarily based for opioid withdrawal. A standard protocol to treat neonatal abstinence syndrome has not been developed. Institute nonpharmacologic strategies for all neonates at risk. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mechanism-directed therapy (treat opioid withdrawal with an opioid) as the first-line therapy. Second-line medications are currently under evaluation.

"Doing being a good parent" in the pediatric clinic: Parents' knowledge displays in advice requests on infants' everyday care.

Parents and pediatricians play pivotal roles in promoting a nurturing environment for children's growth and development, especially during the critical first thousand days of life. Given the challenges involved in infant care and rearing, parents often rely on pediatricians' professional support in a wide range of daily caregiving practices as diverse as complementary feeding, hygiene management, pacifier use, or sleep routines. Nevertheless, little attention has been devoted to the in vivo observation of how parents actually request advice on babies' everyday care, and how pediatricians atten

Sleep bruxism and oral health-related quality of life in children: A systematic review.

Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep that can cause several consequences to the stomatognathic system. This systematic review investigated the impact of SB on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of 0- to 6-year-old children. Literature search was undertaken through PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, Scopus, TRIP, Livivo databases, and grey literature. The search was conducted with no publication year or language limits. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias. The quality of evidence was assessed using GRADE.
